Book excerpt: Electromagnetic wave scattering from random rough surfaces is an active, interdisciplinary area of research with myriad practical applications in fields such as optics, acoustics, geoscience and remote sensing. Focusing on the case of random rough surfaces, this book presents classical asymptotic models used to describe electromagnetic wave scattering. The authors begin by outlining the basic concepts relevant to the topic before moving on to look at the derivation of the scattered field under asymptotic models, based on the Kirchhoff-tangent plane, in order to calculate both the scattered field and the statistical average intensity. More elaborated asymptotic models are also described for dealing with specific cases, and numerical results are presented to illustrate these models. Comparisons with a reference numerical method are made to confirm and refine the theoretical validity domains. The final chapter derives the expressions of the scattering intensities of random rough surfaces under the asymptotic models. Its expressions are given for their incoherent contributions, from statistical calculations. These results are then compared with numerical computations using a Monte-Carlo process, as well as with experimental models, for sea surface backscattering. Contents 1. Electromagnetic Wave Scattering from Random Rough Surfaces: Basics. 2. Derivation of the Scattered Field under Asymptotic Models. 3. Derivation of the Normalized Radar Cross-Section under Asymptotic Models. APPENDIX 1. Far-Field Scattered Fields under the Method of Stationary Phase. APPENDIX 2. Calculation of the Scattering Coefficients under the GO for 3D Problems. Book excerpt: Since the fIrst edition of this book was published in the 1994, the theory of wave scattering from rough surfaces has continued to develop intensively. The community of researchers working in this area keeps growing, which provides justifIcation for issuing this second edition. In preparing the second edition, I was challenged by the problem of se lecting new material from the many important results obtained recently. Even tually, a new section was added to the central Chap. 6 of this book. This sec tion describes the operator expansion technique put forward by M. Milder, which conforms well with the general approach adopted in the book and which to my mind is one of the most promising. Remote sensing of the terrain and ocean surface represents one of the most important and interesting challenges to the theory of wave scattering from rough surfaces. Rapid progress in electronics results in sensors with new capabilities. New powerful computers and data communication systems allow more sophisticated data processing techniques. What information about soil or air-sea interaction processes can be obtained from gigaflops of data streaming from air-or space-borne radars? To use this information efficiently, one cannot rely entirely on heuristic approaches and needs adequate theory. I hope that this book will contribute to progress in this important area.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium "Analysis, Manifolds and Physics" organized in honour of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat by her friends, collaborators and former students, on June 3, 4 and 5, 1992 in Paris. Its title accurately reflects the domains to which Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has made essential contributions. Since the rise of General Relativity, the geometry of Manifolds has become a non-trivial part of space-time physics. At the same time, Functional Analysis has been of enormous importance in Quantum Mechanics, and Quantum Field Theory. Its role becomes decisive when one considers the global behaviour of solutions of differential systems on manifolds. In this sense, General Relativity is an exceptional theory in which the solutions of a highly non-linear system of partial differential equations define by themselves the very manifold on which they are supposed to exist. This is why a solution of Einstein's equations cannot be physically interpreted before its global behaviour is known, taking into account the entire hypothetical underlying manifold. In her youth, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat contributed in a spectacular way to this domain stretching between physics and mathematics, when she gave the proof of the existence of solutions to Einstein's equations on differential manifolds of a quite general type. The methods she created have been worked out by the French school of mathematics, principally by Jean Leray. Her first proof of the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of Einstein's equations inspired Jean Leray's theory of general hyperbolic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. We begin by giving a simple example of a partial differential inequality that occurs in an elementary physics problem. We consider a fluid with pressure u(x, t) at the point x at the instant t that 3 occupies a region Q oflR bounded by a membrane r of negligible thickness that, however, is semi-permeable, i. e., a membrane that permits the fluid to enter Q freely but that prevents all outflow of fluid. One can prove then (cf. the details in Chapter 1, Section 2.2.1) that au (aZu azu aZu) (1) in Q, t>o, -a - du = g du = -a z + -a z + -a z t Xl X X3 z l g a given function, with boundary conditions in the form of inequalities u(X,t»o => au(x,t)/an=O, XEr, (2) u(x,t)=o => au(x,t)/an?:O, XEr, to which is added the initial condition (3) u(x,O)=uo(x). We note that conditions (2) are non linear; they imply that, at each fixed instant t, there exist on r two regions r~ and n where u(x, t) =0 and au (x, t)/an = 0, respectively. These regions are not prescribed; thus we deal with a "free boundary" problem.

Book excerpt: In their 1909 publication Théorie des corps déformables, Eugène and François Cosserat made a historic contribution to materials science by establishing the fundamental principles of the mechanics of generalized continua. The chapters collected in this volume showcase the many areas of continuum mechanics that grew out of the foundational work of the Cosserat brothers. The included contributions provide a detailed survey of the most recent theoretical developments in the field of generalized continuum mechanics and can serve as a useful reference for graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied physics and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Science and Applied Mathematics: Mathematical Methods for Wave Phenomena focuses on the methods of applied mathematics, including equations, wave fronts, boundary value problems, and scattering problems. The publication initially ponders on first-order partial differential equations, Dirac delta function, Fourier transforms, asymptotics, and second-order partial differential equations. Discussions focus on prototype second-order equations, asymptotic expansions, asymptotic expansions of Fourier integrals with monotonic phase, method of stationary phase, propagation of wave fronts, and variable index of refraction. The text then examines wave equation in one space dimension, as well as initial boundary value problems, characteristics for the wave equation in one space dimension, and asymptotic solution of the Klein-Gordon equation. The manuscript offers information on wave equation in two and three dimensions and Helmholtz equation and other elliptic equations. Topics include energy integral, domain of dependence, and uniqueness, scattering problems, Green's functions, and problems in unbounded domains and the Sommerfeld radiation condition. The asymptotic techniques for direct scattering problems and the inverse methods for reflector imaging are also elaborated. The text is a dependable reference for computer science experts and mathematicians pursuing studies on the mathematical methods of wave phenomena.
