Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk theory, which deals with stochastic models of an insurance business, is a classical application of probability theory. The fundamental problem in risk theory is to investigate the ruin possibility of the risk business. Traditionally the occurrence of the claims is described by a Poisson process and the cost of the claims by a sequence of random variables. This book is a treatise of risk theory with emphasis on models where the occurrence of the claims is described by more general point processes than the Poisson process, such as renewal processes, Cox processes and general stationary point processes. In the Cox case the possibility of risk fluctuation is explicitly taken into account. The presentation is based on modern probabilistic methods rather than on analytic methods. The theory is accompanied with discussions on practical evaluation of ruin probabilities and statistical estimation. Many numerical illustrations of the results are given.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of classical actuarial techniques, including material that is not readily accessible elsewhere such as the Ammeter risk model and the Markov-modulated risk model. Other topics covered include utility theory, credibility theory, claims reserving and ruin theory. The author treats both theoretical and practical aspects and also discusses links to Solvency II. Written by one of the leading experts in the field, these lecture notes serve as a valuable introduction to some of the most frequently used methods in non-life insurance. They will be of particular interest to graduate students, researchers and practitioners in insurance, finance and risk management.

Book excerpt: On May 10-12, 1973 a Conference on Mathematical Methods in Graph Theory was held at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The theme of this Conference was recent advances in the application of analytic and algebraic methods to the analysis of queues and queueing networks. In addition some discussion was given to statistical analy ses in queues, control problems and graphical methods. A total of 83 individuals from both industry and academic estab lishments participated in the Conference. A list of these partici pants can be found on page 373. A total of 18 papers were presented, with sUbstantial time being devoted to their informal discussion. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Conference, and includes all papers presented. Book excerpt: Statistical Tools in Finance and Insurance presents ready-to-use solutions, theoretical developments and method construction for many practical problems in quantitative finance and insurance. Written by practitioners and leading academics in the field, this book offers a unique combination of topics from which every market analyst and risk manager will benefit. Covering topics such as heavy tailed distributions, implied trinomial trees, support vector machines, valuation of mortgage-backed securities, pricing of CAT bonds, simulation of risk processes and ruin probability approximation, the book does not only offer practitioners insight into new methods for their applications, but it also gives theoreticians insight into the applicability of the stochastic technology. Additionally, the book provides the tools, instruments and (online) algorithms for recent techniques in quantitative finance and modern treatments in insurance calculations. Written in an accessible and engaging style, this self-instructional book makes a good use of extensive examples and full explanations. Thenbsp;design of the text links theory and computational tools in an innovative way. All Quantlets for the calculation of examples given in the text are supported by the academic edition of XploRe and may be executed via XploRe Quantlet Server (XQS). Book excerpt: The text is a treatment of classical and modern ruin probability theory. Some of the topics are Lundberg's inequality, the Cramer-Lundberg approximation, exact solutions, other approximations (for example, for heavy-tailed claim size distributions), finite horizon ruin probabilities, extensions of the classical compound Poisson model to allow for reserve-dependent premiums, Markov-modulation or periodicity. Special features of the book are the emphasis on change of measure techniques, phase-type distributions as computational vehicle and the connection to other applied probability areas like queueing theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial risk management has become a popular practice amongst financial institutions to protect against the adverse effects of uncertainty caused by fluctuations in interest rates, exchange rates, commodity prices, and equity prices. New financial instruments and mathematical techniques are continuously developed and introduced in financial practice. These techniques are being used by an increasing number of firms, traders and financial risk managers across various industries. Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods confronts the many issues and controversies, and explains the fundamental concepts that underpin financial risk management. Provides a comprehensive introduction to the core topics of risk and financial management. Adopts a pragmatic approach, focused on computational, rather than just theoretical, methods. Bridges the gap between theory and practice in financial risk management Includes coverage of utility theory, probability, options and derivatives, stochastic volatility and value at risk. Suitable for students of risk, mathematical finance, and financial risk management, and finance practitioners. Includes extensive reference lists, applications and suggestions for further reading. Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods is ideally suited to both students of mathematical finance with little background in economics and finance, and students of financial risk management, as well as finance practitioners requiring a clearer understanding of the mathematical and computational methods they use every day. It combines the required level of rigor, to support the theoretical developments, with a practical flavour through many examples and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides recent results on the stochastic approximation of systems by weak convergence techniques. General and particular schemes of proofs for average, diffusion, and Poisson approximations of stochastic systems are presented, allowing one to simplify complex systems and obtain numerically tractable models. The systems discussed in the book include stochastic additive functionals, dynamical systems, stochastic integral functionals, increment processes and impulsive processes. All these systems are switched by Markov and semi-Markov processes whose phase space is considered in asymptotic split and merging schemes. Most of the results from semi-Markov processes are new and presented for the first time in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yet again, here is a Springer volume that offers readers something completely new. Until now, solved examples of the application of stochastic control to actuarial problems could only be found in journals. Not any more: this is the first book to systematically present these methods in one volume. The author starts with a short introduction to stochastic control techniques, then applies the principles to several problems. These examples show how verification theorems and existence theorems may be proved, and that the non-diffusion case is simpler than the diffusion case. Schmidli’s brilliant text also includes a number of appendices, a vital resource for those in both academic and professional settings.
