Book excerpt: This book reports a study of a class of Dion–Jacobson-type layered perovskite oxides in which high oxide-ion conductivities in phases were discovered for the first time in the world. The oxide-ion conductors are important in various energy conversion devices and environmental protection applications such as solid-oxide fuel cells, oxygen gas sensors, oxygen separation membranes, and oxygen-based catalysts. The discoveries are based on a new screening method, called the bond valence method, combined with an original design concept. The present finding of high oxide-ion conductivity reported in the thesis suggested the potential of Dion–Jacobson phases as a platform to identify superior oxide-ion conductors. To understand what causes such high oxide-ion conductivities in these layered perovskite oxides, the author analyzed their crystal structures at high temperature and described the relationship between oxide-ion conductivities and their crystal structures. A deep understanding of the mechanisms of oxide-ion diffusivity at an atomic level in the Dion–Jacobson phases is clarified. The discovery of these materials, the new screening method, and the original design concept make possible the realization of many environment-friendly technologies. The findings in this thesis facilitate the possibilities for many novel applications that will help lead to a sustainable future.

However, they currently employ liquid electrolytes containing flammable organic solvents that could lead to a fire if batteries are overheated. Solid electrolytes, also called fast-ion conductors or superionic conductors, are alternatives with the uttermost safety. Among various solid electrolytes, lithium garnet oxides are a promising family of materials due to their high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. This work discusses the study of diffusion and conduction in LixLa3Zrx-5Ta7-xO12 (x=5-7) garnet oxides using computational methods. We developed two new generations of interatomic potentials, induced dipole, and machine learning, for this composition series. We compared them with existing interatomic potentials in terms of force/virial error against density-functional theory, prediction of phase transition, self-diffusivity, and ionic conductivity, and found machine learning interatomic potentials have the best accuracy. We then applied machine learning interatomic potentials to investigate the temperature and composition dependence of diffusion and conduction in bulk materials and the influence of grain boundary structure on ionic conductivity. We believe that the atomic insight obtained from this work could be worthwhile in understanding the bottleneck of materials performance and could provide guidance on further improvements.℗

Among these, SOFCs are the most efficient and have various advantages such as flexibility in fuel, high reliability, simple balance of plant (BOP), and a long history. Therefore, SOFC technology is attracting much attention as a power plant and is now close to marketing as a combined heat and power generation system. From the beginning of SOFC development, many perovskite oxides have been used for SOFC components; for example, LaMnO -based oxide for the cathode and 3 LaCrO for the interconnect are the most well known materials for SOFCs. The 3 current SOFCs operate at temperatures higher than 1073 K. However, lowering the operating temperature of SOFCs is an important goal for further SOFC development. Reliability, durability, and stability of the SOFCs could be greatly improved by decreasing their operating temperature. In addition, a lower operating temperature is also beneficial for shortening the startup time and decreasing energy loss from heat radiation. For this purpose, faster oxide ion conductors are required to replace the conventional Y O -stabilized ZrO 2 3 2 electrolyte. A new class of electrolytes such as LaGaO is considered to be 3 highly useful for intermediate-temperature SOFCs.

Book excerpt: Recently there has been a great level of interest in the effect of interfaces in oxide ionic conductors with a view to eventual application in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Enhancements in electrical conductivity of one half to eight orders of magnitude have been reported in simplified thin film and multi-layered heterostructure systems. Often this is reported to be enhanced oxygen ion conduction with little supporting evidence. The aim of this work is to investigate these reports and develop an understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Several series of samples were investigated to achieve this goal. The first, designed to emulate an anomalous result from literature with alternating samarium doped ceria (SDC) and undoped ceria layers, featured an increasing total number of layers of equal individual thickness, and thus a constant interfacial density. This system featured no enhancement in conductivity and exhibited a level of tracer diffusion comparable with that in bulk SDC. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) studies, however, revealed a significant level of Ce III in the undoped layers. The second and third series used similar materials but tested the hypothesis proposed in many works, that conductivity enhancement was related to tensile strain in the conducting material at the heterointerfaces. The second, manipulating the strain at the interface by varying the dopant (Nd, Sm, Y) in films with alternating doped and undoped ceria layers and a range of interfacial densities. This series exhibited minimal change in conductivity with strain or interfacial density. The third series replaced the doped ceria with yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) in order to achieve a higher level of tensile strain. This again featured minimal change in conductivity. Tracer diffusion and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) studies suggested that the undoped ceria layers featured vacancy-rich regions, close to the interfaces, possibly with compensating Ce III. The final series of multilayers comprised alternating praseodymium nickel copper gallate (Pr1.91 Ni0.71 Cu0.24 Ga0.05 O4) and SDC layers which exhibited a high level of conductivity and evidence of reduced levels of p-type conduction with decreasing SDC layer thickness, suggesting enhanced ionic conductivity. Oxygen tracer studies revealed, however, that the dominant charge carrier was not oxygen. Finally a study of the effect of dislocations in ionic conductors was performed on deformed single crystal YSZ. Impedance measurements revealed a small enhancement in conductivity in the orientation parallel to the dislocation cores however diffusion measurements showed a change that could be negated by the consideration of the inherent errors.
