Book excerpt: Frank-Kamenetskii, a leader in Russian science, was the first to define conditions for two stable operating regimes in chemical reactions, one controlled by chemical reactions, the other by diffusion processes. In this book he treats mathematically the subjects of reaction ignition, quenching, and periodic processes in chemical kinetics as found in flames, combustion of solids, and other chemical reactions. The book was translated from the Russian by the late N. Thou and edited by R. Wilhelm. Originally published in 1955. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reaction Kinetics for Chemical Engineers focuses on chemical kinetics, including homogeneous reactions, nonisothermal systems, flow reactors, heterogeneous processes, granular beds, catalysis, and scale-up methods. The publication first takes a look at fundamentals and homogeneous isothermal reactions. Topics include simple reactions at constant volume or pressure, material balance in complex reactions, homogeneous catalysis, effect of temperature, energy of activation, law of mass action, and classification of reactions. The book also elaborates on adiabatic and programmed reactions, continuous stirred reactors, and homogeneous flow reactions. Topics include nonisothermal flow reactions, semiflow processes, tubular-flow reactors, material balance in flow problems, types of flow processes, rate of heat input, constant heat-transfer coefficient, and nonisothermal conditions. The text ponders on uncatalyzed heterogeneous reactions, fluid-phase reactions catalyzed by solids, and fixed and fluidized beds of particles. The transfer processes in granular masses, fluidization, heat and mass transfer, adsorption rates and equilibria, diffusion and combined mechanisms, diffusive mass transfer, and mass-transfer coefficients in chemical reactions are discussed. The publication is a dependable source of data for chemical engineers and readers wanting to explore chemical kinetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began as a program of self-education. While teaching under graduate physical chemistry, I became progressively more dissatisfied with my approach to chemical kinetics. The solution to my problem was to write a detailed set of lecture notes which covered more material, in greater depth, than could be presented in undergraduate physical chemistry. These notes are the foundation upon which this book is built. My background led me to view chemical kinetics as closely related to transport phenomena. While the relationship of these topics is well known, it is often ignored, except for brief discussions of irreversible thermody namics. In fact, the physics underlying such apparently dissimilar processes as reaction and energy transfer is not so very different. The intermolecular potential is to transport what the potential-energy surface is to reactivity. Instead of beginning the sections devoted to chemical kinetics with a discussion of various theories, I have chosen to treat phenomenology and mechanism first. In this way the essential unity of kinetic arguments, whether applied to gas-phase or solution-phase reaction, can be emphasized. Theories of rate constants and of chemical dynamics are treated last, so that their strengths and weaknesses may be more clearly highlighted. The book is designed for students in their senior year or first year of graduate school. A year of undergraduate physical chemistry is essential preparation. While further exposure to chemical thermodynamics, statistical thermodynamics, or molecular spectroscopy is an asset, it is not necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals engaged in application of thermo-fluid science to the study of combustion. The relevant thermo-chemistry and thermo-physical data required for this study are provided in the 6 appendices along with appropriate curve-fit coefficients. To facilitate gradual learning, two chapters are devoted to thermodynamics of pure and gaseous mixture substances, followed by one chapter each on chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics. This material when coupled with a dedicated chapter on understanding of equations governing transport of momentum, heat and mass in the presence of chemical reactions provides adequate grounding to undertake analysis of practical combustion equipment, of premixed and diffusion flames as well as of solid particle and liquid droplet combustion. The learnings from the aforementioned chapters are taken to a uniquely strong chapter on application case studies, some of which have special relevance for developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveyed in this book are the kinetics of non-linear mass transfer and its effects on hydrodynamic stability in systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, in electrochemical systems with high current density and in chemically reacting systems. In Part 1 the non-linear mass transfer as a result of an intensive interphase mass transfer in the gas (liquid)-solid surface, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems is considered in the duffusion boundary layer approximation as well as in flat channel taking the longitudinal diffusion into account. The influence of the direction of the intensive interphase mass transfer on heat transfer and multi-component mass transfer is illustrated. Part 2 discusses non-linear mass transfer in electrochemical systems with high current density using the examples of the anode dissolving of metals in the electrolyte flow and the electro-separation of metals out of concentrated solutions. The theory of the measured electrochemical treatment of metals and alloys, which is a method of wide practical use, has been elaborated on this basis. In Part 3 the non-linear mass transfer in chemically reacting systems is considered in the cases of: non-linearity of the equations of the chemical reaction's kinetics and intensive interphase mass transfer or thermo-capillary effect due to chemical reactions. On this basis, the mechanisms and the macro-kinetics of the chemical transformations in the gas-liquid systems are discussed. Part 4 is dedicated to the chemical reaction kinetics in stationary two phase systems at an arbitrary contact time between phases. In Part 5 the effects of concentration gradients are considered in the approximations of the linear theory of the hydrodynamic stability of almost parallel flows. In systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, the Marangoni effect could also be observed, beside the effect of non-linear mass transfer. A comparative analysis of both effects is made in this book.

Book excerpt: Numerical Prediction of Flow, Heat Transfer, Turbulence and Combustion: Selected Works of Professor D. Brian Spalding focuses on the many contributions of Professor Spalding on thermodynamics. This compilation of his works is done to honor the professor on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Relatively, the works contained in this book are selected to highlight the genius of Professor Spalding in this field of interest. The book presents various research on combustion, heat transfer, turbulence, and flows. His thinking on separated flows paved the way for the multi-dimensional modeling of turbulence. Arguments on the universality of the models of turbulence and the problems that are associated with combustion engineering are clarified. The text notes the importance of combustion science as well as the problems associated with it. Mathematical computations are also presented in determining turbulent flows in different environments, including on curved pipes, curved ducts, and rotating ducts. These calculations are presented to further strengthen the claims of Professor Spalding in this discipline. The book is a great find for those who are interested in studying thermodynamics.
