Book excerpt: The motivation: Seismic-while-drilling (SWD) utilises drill bit vibrations as a seismic source to obtain a reverse VSP profile, which can be used to calibrate the surface seismic image, predict infront-of-bit geo-hazards, and/or for general imaging around the bore hole. However, using the drill bit as a source has known issues of narrow band spectrum and weak energy; the extent of these issues varies with different types of drill bits. As such, different data processing and imaging methods might be needed for different drill bits. In this work, we try to estimate formation velocity based on drill bit position and to locate the drill bit in the cross correlation domain, so as to test the viability of using a diamond impregnated drill bit as an effective seismic source in hard rock imaging.
