This book was released on 1996 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LA DIFFRACTION DES RAYONS X PAR LES MATERIAUX POLYCRISTALLINS, TECHNIQUE D'INVESTIGATION DE LA MATIERE DEJA EXTREMEMENT RICHE, OFFRE UNE POSSIBILITE NOUVELLE: L'ETUDE ET LE SUIVI DE LA MICROSTRUCTURE EN DOMAINES DANS LES MATERIAUX FERROELECTRIQUES. LES GRAINS MONOCRISTALLINS D'UN MATERIAU FERROELECTRIQUES SONT DIVISES EN DOMAINES DE POLARISATION UNIFORME DONT L'ARRANGEMENT ANTIPARALLELE ET PERPENDICULAIRE MINIMISE LA DEFORMATION ET L'ENERGIE ELECTROSTATIQUE. CET ARRANGEMENT DEPEND DU CONDITIONNEMENT DU MATERIAU (MONOCRISTAL, POUDRE, CERAMIQUE) ET EST INFLUENCE PAR LES CONTRAINTES PHYSIQUES EXTERNES TELLES QUE LA TEMPERATURE, LE CHAMP ELECTRIQUE OU LA PRESSION. DES EXPERIENCES DE DIFFRACTION DES RAYONS X IN SITU, DANS LESQUELLES LE MATERIAU EST SOLLICITE PAR LES CONTRAINTES PHYSIQUES, TEMPERATURE OU CHAMP ELECTRIQUE, QUI FORCENT LA MICROSTRUCTURE A EVOLUER, ONT MONTRE QUE CETTE MICROSTRUCTURE EN DOMAINES FERROELECTRIQUES LAISSE DES EMPREINTES DANS LE DIAGRAMME DE DIFFRACTION DU MATERIAU. AINSI, L'ETUDE DE L'EVOLUTION DES PARAMETRES CLASSIQUES DEFINISSANT UNE RAIE DE DIFFRACTION (POSITION, INTENSITE, PROFIL) EN FONCTION DE LA TEMPERATURE ET DU CHAMP ELECTRIQUE, A PERMIS D'ACCEDER A DE NOMBREUSES INFORMATIONS SUR LE CARACTERE FERROELECTRIQUE DE BATIO#3 ET SA MICROSTRUCTURE EN DOMAINES. LES EMPREINTES LES PLUS IMPORTANTES SONT: L'EVOLUTION DES INTENSITES RELATIVES DES RAIES ASSOCIEES AVEC LE CHAMP ELECTRIQUE QUI TRADUIT L'ETAT DE POLARISATION DU MATERIAU, L'EVOLUTION DES LARGEURS DES RAIES AVEC LA TEMPERATURE QUI MONTRE QUE LES MURS DE DOMAINES A 90 CONTRIBUENT A L'ELARGISSEMENT DES RAIES EN TANT QUE MICRODISTORSIONS DE RESEAU PARTICULIERES. DE PLUS, LE DIAGRAMME DE DIFFRACTION DE BATIO#3 POSSEDE UNE PARTICULARITE JUSQU'ALORS MAL EXPLIQUEE: IL EXISTE DE L'INTENSITE DIFFRACTEE SUPPLEMENTAIRE ENTRE LES RAIES ASSOCIEES D'UN DOUBLET. PLUSIEURS POSSIBILITES D'INTERPRETATION PROPOSEES N'ONT CEPENDANT PAS PU JUSTIFIER ENTIEREMENT LES PROFILS DE DIFFRACTION OBSERVES. NOUS AVONS MONTRE, D'UNE PART, PAR LES EXPERIENCES DE DIFFRACTION IN SITU, EN TEMPERATURE ET SOUS CHAMP, QUE CETTE INTENSITE DIFFRACTEE SUPPLEMENTAIRE ENTRE LES RAIES D'UN DOUBLET EST, ELLE AUSSI, UNE EMPREINTE DE LA MICROSTRUCTURE EN DOMAINES, D'AUTRE PART QUE CETTE PARTICULARITE EST COHERENTE DANS TOUT LE DIAGRAMME DE DIFFRACTION ET QU'ELLE SE PRESENTE SOUS LA FORME D'UN PLATEAU D'INTENSITE ENTRE LES DEUX RAIES. AINSI, NOUS AVONS PU PROPOSER UNE DESCRIPTION DU MUR DE DOMAINE A 90, VALIDEE PAR UN CALCUL THEORIQUE, QUI JUSTIFIE ENTIEREMENT CETTE INTENSITE DIFFRACTEE SUPPLEMENTAIRE ENTRE LES RAIES D'UN DOUBLET. LE MUR DE DOMAINES DOIT ETRE VU COMME UNE ZONE DE RACCORDEMENT ENTRE LES DEUX DOMAINES A 90 ADJACENTS ET NON COMME UN SIMPLE PLAN DE MACLE. A L'INTERIEUR DU MUR, UNE EVOLUTION CONTINUE DU RESEAU CRISTALLIN FAIT PASSER DU RESEAU DE L'UN DES DOMAINES A CELUI DE L'AUTRE DOMAINE. L'INTENSITE DU PLATEAU TRADUIT A LA FOIS LA DENSITE ET L'EPAISSEUR DES MURS DE DOMAINES A 90

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent years, people involved in developing new metals and materials for use in some of the rather extreme conditions of stress, temperature, and environment have relied heavily on the microstructural condition of their materials. In fact, many of the newer materials, such as dispersion-strengthened alloys, have been designed almost entirely by first determining the microstruc ture desired and then finding the right combination of composition, heat treatment, and mechanical working that will result in the de sired microstructure. Furthermore, the extremely high reliability required of materials used today, for example, in aerospace and nuclear energy systems, requires close control on the microstruc tural conditions of materials. This is clearly evident from even a cursory examination of recently written specifications for mate rials where rather precise microstructural parameters are stipu lated. Whereas specifications written several years ago may have included microstructural requirements for details such as ASTM grain size or graphite type, today's specifications are beginning to include such things as volume fraction of phases, mean free path of particles, and grain intercept distances. Rather arbitrary terms such as "medium pearlite" have been replaced by requirements such as "interlamella spacing not to exceed 0. 1 micron. " Finally, materials users have become increasingly aware that when a material does fail, the reason for its failure may be found by examining and "reading" its microstructure. The responsibility for a particular microstructure and a resulting failure is a matter of growing importance in current product liability consider ations.

Book excerpt: For many years, if businesses were caught dumping waste, it was treated more as a nuisance than as a crime; the common images of the criminal and the dumper were worlds apart. In Dangerous Ground, originally published in 1992, Donald J. Rebovich closes this perceptual gap, providing essential information about and analysis of hazardous waste crime and the hazardous waste criminal. This paperback edition includes new material, noting important changes since the book's original publication. Rebovich finds that the criminal dumper is usually an ordinary businessman. The author's research discovers that hazardous waste disposal crimes are more likely driven by the cost of legitimate disposal options, rather than by organized crime figures. It is also a world where one's criminal position is often determined by industry connections and personal relationships. Dangerous Ground places the criminal dumping culture in perspective by detailing the basics of hazardous waste generation, its legitimate disposal, government responses, and efforts to control illegal disposal. An epilogue concludes with an analysis of new threats to our environment posed by gas and oil drilling, declining federal prosecutions, progressive sentencing for offenders, and recommendations on how the global community can effectively address international environmental crime.
