Book excerpt: The association of PTSD symptoms and disordered eating behaviors and its related mechanisms is under-researched. The current study explored the role of emotion regulation in this association as well as how sleep quality may interact with these variables. This online study included data from women who reported having experienced at least one traumatic experience during their lifetime. Disordered eating behaviors wre analyzed in the form of emotional eating, binge eating, and food addiction symptoms. Each eating behavior was analyzed separately with PTSD symptoms, difficulties in emotion regulation (DER), and sleep quality. Greater PTSD symptomology and DER were positively associated with all three eating behaviors. DER significantly mediated the relationship between greater PTSD symptoms and worse emotional eating. Post-hoc exploratory analyses revealed that difficulties with impulsivity mediated greater PTSD symptoms and more food addiction symptoms. Sleep quality did not interact in the hypothesized direction; however, more research is needed regarding the role of sleep and its association with PTSD symptomology and disordered eating.
