In ihren Anfängen ging die Medienwirkungsforschung von einer meist negativen Auswirkung der Medien Radio und Kino auf RezipientInnen aus. Dieser Eindruck wurde durch politische Propaganda und den Erfolg professioneller Werbung während des ersten Weltkriegs noch verstärkt. Gemäß dem Reiz-Reaktions-Modell schienen Medien in der Lage zu sein, Gesellschaften 'gleichschalten' zu können. Zur Bestätigung dieser Thesen wurden während der 20er Jahre schließlich die Payne Fund Studies durchgeführt. Carl I. Hovland führte mit seinem Forschungsteam in den 40er und 50er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts Untersuchungen bezüglich der Wirkungen von Massenmedien auf die persönlichen Einstellungen von RezipientInnen durch. Die Wirkung von Medieninhalten wird den Studien zufolge durch die Wahl der einseitigen vs. der zweiseitigen Argumentation, die Anordnung der Argumente, furchterregender Appelle, der Glaubwürdigkeit der Quelle sowie dem Sleeper-Effect bestimmt und beeinflusst. In seinen Studien knüpfte Jürgen Grimm an die differenziertere Betrachtungsweise der Wirkung von Gewaltdarstellungen in Medien an. Als Ergebnis lässt sich festhalten, dass Unterschiede zwischen der Wirkung 'Sauberer' und 'Schmutziger' Gewalt bestehen, dass die Dramaturgie eines Films immer auf ein befriedigendes Filmende hin gerichtet sein sollte, sowie, dass die RezipientInnen primär die Perspektive des Opfers, nicht die des Täters einnehmen.
