Book excerpt: In this gripping and provocative “ethnography of death,” anthropologist and MacArthur "Genius" Fellow Jason De León sheds light on one of the most pressing political issues of our time—the human consequences of US immigration and border policy. The Land of Open Graves reveals the suffering and deaths that occur daily in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona as thousands of undocumented migrants attempt to cross the border from Mexico into the United States. Drawing on the four major fields of anthropology, De León uses an innovative combination of ethnography, archaeology, linguistics, and forensic science to produce a scathing critique of “Prevention through Deterrence,” the federal border enforcement policy that encourages migrants to cross in areas characterized by extreme environmental conditions and high risk of death. For two decades, systematic violence has failed to deter border crossers while successfully turning the rugged terrain of southern Arizona into a killing field. Featuring stark photography by Michael Wells, this book examines the weaponization of natural terrain as a border wall: first-person stories from survivors underscore this fundamental threat to human rights, and the very lives, of non-citizens as they are subjected to the most insidious and intangible form of American policing as institutional violence. In harrowing detail, De León chronicles the journeys of people who have made dozens of attempts to cross the border and uncovers the stories of the objects and bodies left behind in the desert. The Land of Open Graves will spark debate and controversy.

Book excerpt: The concentrations of antimony, barium, and lead in gunshot residue collection swab extract solutions were determined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Analytical advantages of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry are a lack of interferences by swab extract constituents, low detection limits, wide linear dynamic ranges, short analysis times, and good precision and accuracy. This procedure is applicable to both hand blank and shooter-associated levels of antimony, barium, and lead in gunshot residue swab extracts.

Over the years, scientists have developed methods for detecting GSR on a shooter's hands, a victim, or any object that may have been within six feet of the firearm. However, when the weapon is more than six feet from the target, gun powder residue may not be present. The only residue that may be present is bullet wipe, material that is transferred from the surface of the bullet as it penetrates the target. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is used to identify the elemental composition of an unknown material. Areas as small as 2 mm2 can be analyzed, making it an ideal method for the analysis of the minute residues left by a bullet. The objective of this research is to determine the possibility of using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) as a presumptive test of bullet wipe produced by lead-free bullets. Four materials, cotton, wood, drywall, and cement, were shot with three different brands of lead-free cartridges. To detect the bullet wipe, the samples were analyzed for copper, lead, and barium. The analysis was performed using addLIBS software and NIST Atomic Spectra Database. Bullet wipe was successfully detected in the cotton, wood, and drywall, but not the cement block.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range at which a weapon has been fired is an important measurement for the reconstruction of firearms offenses (murder, suicide, accident). All changes caused by a shot and which vary according to the distance from the weapon are suitable in principle for determining this distance. However, some procedures are very elegant in theory but hardly applicable in practice. The constructions of ammunition and the sequence of events during a shot are dealt with first as this knowledge forms a basis for understanding the various methods. \ The individual zones (classes) of firing distances (contact shot, intermediate shot, distance shot) are described. In this connection, the morphological methods for determining the firing distance are discussed. From the shape and size of the powder residue distribution (soot stains, powder tattooing) and with the knowledge of the weapon and ammunition, the distance from the target can be elucidated. In this chapter, the methods of making an invisible distribution visible are also dealt with. In order to determine the range of the shot from the appearance of the wound no complicated apparatus is necessary. One can judge with the naked eye. These procedures have a great advantage over the methods discussed in the following chapter in that they give stronger proof. They are more vivid and convincing for the uninitiated (judge or jury) than abstract measurements obtained by scientific devices.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic analysis of smokeless powders has historically focused on the analysis of unburned powder or gunshot residue. The analysis of fired cartridge residues and subsequent statistical association to the corresponding unburned powder has only recently been investigated. Previous work in our laboratory employed liquid chromatography-time of flight-mass spectrometry (LC-TOFMS) and chemometric procedures to investigate association of fired cartridge residues to the corresponding unburned powders.2 While successful association was achieved for some powders, LC-TOFMS is not readily available in forensic laboratories. A widely available alternative is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The work presented here demonstrates the use of GC MS for the analysis of unburned powder and fired cartridge residues, followed principal components analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) to investigate association and differentiation of fired cartridge residues to the corresponding unburned powder. Both PCA and HCA resulted in distinct groupings of the unburned powders, based largely on the abundance of ethyl centralite and dibutyl phthalate. Despite variability and decreased abundances observed in all fired cartridge residues, successful association of the fired cartridges to the corresponding unburned powder was possible but was limited by the original composition of the unburned powder. Overall, this work demonstrates that GC-MS and chemometric procedures are effective tools for the association of fired cartridge residues and unburned powders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique was applied to the identification and analysis of gunshot residues. Studies were made of the type of bullet and bullet hole identification, firearm discharge element profiles, the effect of various target backings, and hand swabbings. The discussion of the results reviews the sensitivity of the PIXE technique, its nondestructive nature, and its role in determining the distance from the gun to the victim and identifying the type of bullet used and whether a wound was made by a bullet or not. The high sensitivity of the PIXE technique, which is able to analyze samples as small as 0.1 to 1 ng, and its usefulness for detecting a variety of elements should make it particularly useful in firearms residue investigations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, testimony by representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in thousands of criminal cases has relied on evidence from Compositional Analysis of Bullet Lead (CABL), a forensic technique that compares the elemental composition of bullets found at a crime scene to the elemental composition of bullets found in a suspect's possession. Different from ballistics techniques that compare striations on the barrel of a gun to those on a recovered bullet, CABL is used when no gun is recovered or when bullets are too small or mangled to observe striations. Forensic Analysis: Weighing Bullet Lead Evidence assesses the scientific validity of CABL, finding that the FBI should use a different statistical analysis for the technique and that, given variations in bullet manufacturing processes, expert witnesses should make clear the very limited conclusions that CABL results can support. The report also recommends that the FBI take additional measures to ensure the validity of CABL results, which include improving documentation, publishing details, and improving on training and oversight.
