The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. The cross section is measured inclusively, as well as separately for top (t) and antitop $ \left(\overline{\mathrm{t}}\right) $, in final states with a muon or an electron. The measured inclusive t-channel cross section is?t-ch. = 83.6 ± 2.3 (stat.) ± 7.4 (syst.) pb. The single t and $ \overline{\mathrm{t}} $ cross sections are measured to be?t-ch.(t) = 53.8 ± 1.5 (stat.) ± 4.4 (syst.) pb and?$_{t-ch.}$ $ \left(\overline{t}\right) $ = 27.6 ± 1.3 (stat.) ± 3.7 (syst.) pb, respectively. The measured ratio of cross sections is Rt-ch. =?t-ch.(t)/?t-ch. $ \left(\overline{\mathrm{t}}\right) $ = 1.95 ± 0.10 (stat.) ± 0.19 (syst.), in agreement with the standard model prediction. The modulus of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element Vtb is extracted and, in combination with a previous CMS result at √s = 7 TeV, a value.

Book excerpt: The cross section for the production of single top quarks in the $t$ channel is measured in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb$^{-1}$. The event selection requires one muon and two jets where one of the jets is identified as originating from a bottom quark. Several kinematic variables are then combined into a multivariate discriminator to distinguish signal from background events. A fit to the distribution of the discriminating variable yields a total cross section of 232 $\pm$ 13 (stat) $\pm$ 28 (syst) pb and a ratio of top quark and top antiquark production of $R_{t\textrm{-ch.}}= $ 1.81 $\pm$ 0.18 (stat) $\pm$ 0.15 (syst). From the total cross section the absolute value of the CKM matrix element $V_{\mathrm{tb}}$ is calculated to be 1.03 $\pm$ 0.07 (exp) $\pm$ 0.02 (theo). All results are in agreement with the standard model predictions.

The first one exploits the special angular properties of the signal, together with background estimates from data. The second approach uses a multivariate analysis technique to probe the compatibility with signal topology expected from electroweak top quark production. Book excerpt: The cross section for pair production of top quarks (t-tbar) with high transverse momenta is measured in pp collisions, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with sqrt(s) = 8 TeV in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse-femtobarns. The measurement is performed using lepton+jets events, where one top quark decays semileptonically, while the second top quark decays to a hadronic final state. The hadronic decay is reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet, and identified as a top quark candidate using jet substructure techniques. The integrated cross section and the differential cross sections as a function of top quark pt and rapidity are measured at particle level within a fiducial region related to the detector-level requirements and at parton level. The particle-level integrated cross section is found to be sigma[t-tbar] = 0.499 +/- 0.035 (stat+syst) +/- 0.095 (theory) +/- 0.013 (lumi) pb for top quark pt> 400 GeV. The parton-level measurement is sigma[t-tbar] = 1.44 +/- 0.10 (stat+syst) +/- 0.29 (theory) +/- 0.04 (lumi) pb. The integrated and differential cross section results are compared to predictions from several event generators.

However they can also be produced singly through the weak interation. This is a rarer process with many experimental challenges. It is interesting because it provides a new window to search for evidence of physics beyond the standard model picture, such as a fourth generation of quarks or to search for insight into the Higgs Mechanism. Single top production also provides a direct way to calculate the CKM matrix element Vtb. This thesis presents new measurements for single top quark production in the s+t, s and t channels using 5.4 fb-1 of data collected at the DØ detector at Fermilab in Batavia, IL. The analysis was performed using Boosted decision trees to separate signal from background and Bayesian statistcs to calculate all the cross sections.

The measurement is performed using data collected by the CMS experiment during the 2016 data-taking period, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The measurement is performed using events where one top quark decays hadronically and is reconstructed as a single large-radius t jet with pt > 400 GeV, while the other top quark decays leptonically to a b jet, an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Jet substructure techniques are used to identify the large-radius jet as a t jet candidate. The measurement demonstrates that current simulations overpredict the rate of top quark pair production at high pt, providing valuable feedback on the accuracy of current simulation.

This is the first analysis to isolate an individual single top quark production channel. We select events containing an isolated electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and two, three or four jets from 2.3 fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. One or two of the jets are identified as containing a b hadron. We combine three multivariate techniques optimized for the t-channel process to measure the t- and s-channel cross sections simultaneously. We measure cross sections of 3.14{sub -0.80}{sup +0.94} pb for the t-channel and 1.05 ± 0.81 pb for the s-channel. The measured t-channel result is found to have a significance of 4.8 standard deviations and is consistent with the standard model prediction.
