Book excerpt: In the European discourse of post 9/11 reality, concepts such as “Multiculturalism”, “Integration” and “European Islam” are becoming more and more topical. The empirically- based contributions in this volume aim to reflect the variety of current Muslim social practices and life-worlds in Germany. The volume goes beyond the fragmented methods of minority case studies and the monolithic view of Muslims as portrayed by mass media to present fresh theoretical approaches and in-depth analyses of a rich mosaic of communities, cultures and social practices. Issues of politics, religion, society, economics, media, art, literature, law and gender are addressed. The result is a vibrant state-of-the-art publication of studies of real-life communities and individuals. Contributors are Kilian Bälz, Kea Eilers, Friedmann Eissler, Konrad Hirschler, Jeanette S. Book excerpt: In recent years, the challenge of relating one’s own theological concept of man and his destiny to secular topics, such as the inviolability of human dignity, has generated a dynamic discourse about how Islamic anthropology can help cultivate and perfect the individual self and social ‘humanisation’. This anthology brings together contemporary Muslim and non-Muslim approaches to the secular notion of human dignity with reference to the Islamic tradition in general and the anthropology of the Qur’ān in particular. The collection presents approaches to Islamic theological anthropology, across a range of fields, especially with regard to the narrative of Adam and Iblīs, which occurs in all monotheistic traditions. It focuses on the specific ‘grammars’ of anthropological narratives at the levels of the canonical text of the Qur’ān itself (Section I) and the interpretations that focus on its performative discourse (Section II). Further to this, the normative implications of the human images that are derived from the canonical text and its interpretations are discussed in Section III. The dynamic interdependencies between the hermeneutics of the Qur’ān, theological anthropology and legal philosophy, particularly in the European context, are a promising field of research that not only allows a deeper insight into the multiperspectivity and indexicality of theological anthropology, but also has the potential to facilitate the long-overdue discursive cooperation and rapprochement between Muslim and non-Muslim scholarship.

Book excerpt: In the enormous literature on the Muslim world, one of the few gaps in our knowledge is the status of Islam in inter-war Europe, an imbalance this book aims to address. The Muslim population of Europe in the period from 1918-1939 was not one of isolated islands of belief and practice. Rather, there was far more interaction between Muslim communities than had hitherto been imagined. For example, there was much correspondence and exchange of ideas between the Ahmadi-Lahori missions of Berlin and Woking, near London, and Albanian religious leaders. Other topics discussed in this book include the earlier than imagined emergence of notions of a distinctly 'European' Islam, the fraught interplay of politics and Islam, especially the development by some governments of Muslim 'agendas', the richness and importance of debates within Europe's Muslim community, the attempts by the Nazis to foment 'jihad' and the modus operandi of trans-national networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. [Cultural Impacts of the Reformation. Documentation of the Wittenberg Conference in August 2017. Volume II] The Reformation not only changed theology and the church, but set in motion a fundamental transformation, which encompassed every aspect of society. Thus, Protestantism had an enduring influence on social structures, patterns of perception, normative ideas, scientific concepts, scopes for artistic expression and cultural identities. The announced proceedings document the international and interdisciplinary congress "Cultural Impacts of the Reformation" held in August 2017 by the universities of Halle-Wittenberg, Jena and Leipzig at the LEUCOREA Foundation in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The contributions – amongst others by Udo Sträter, Charlotte Methuen, Martin Heckel, Herman Selderhuis, Rudolf von Sinner, Daniel Jeyaraj and Jochen Hörisch – show precisely both the ways the Protestant confessional milieus have been influential for 500 years and how they themselves have reacted to cultural challenges.

Book excerpt: The work of German cultural theorist and art historian Aby Warburg (1866–1929) has had a lasting effect on how we think about images. This book is the first in English to focus on his last project, the encyclopedic Atlas of Images: Mnemosyne. Begun in earnest in 1927, and left unfinished at the time of Warburg’s death in 1929, the Atlas consisted of sixty-three large wooden panels covered with black cloth. On these panels Warburg carefully, intuitively arranged some thousand black-and-white photographs of classical and Renaissance art objects, as well as of astrological and astronomical images ranging from ancient Babylon to Weimar Germany. Here and there, he also included maps, manuscript pages, and contemporary images taken from newspapers. Trying through these constellations of images to make visible the many polarities that fueled antiquity’s afterlife, Warburg envisioned the Atlas as a vital form of metaphoric thought. While the nondiscursive, frequently digressive character of the Atlas complicates any linear narrative of its themes and contents, Christopher D. Johnson traces several thematic sequences in the panels. By drawing on Warburg’s published and unpublished writings and by attending to Warburg’s cardinal idea that "pathos formulas" structure the West’s cultural memory, Johnson maps numerous tensions between word and image in the Atlas. In addition to examining the work itself, he considers the literary, philosophical, and intellectual-historical implications of the Atlas. As Johnson demonstrates, the Atlas is not simply the culmination of Warburg’s lifelong study of Renaissance culture but the ultimate expression of his now literal, now metaphoric search for syncretic solutions to the urgent problems posed by the history of art and culture.
