Die einfachste Antwort auf diese Frage hat schon der alte Kirchenvater Lactantius mit der etymologischen Erklarung gegeben: "Religion ist die Gebundenheit an Gott durch das Band der Frommigkeit" Diese Definition ist ganz richtig, nur bedarf sie naherer Bestimmungen, um ihre allgemeine Anwendbarkeit zu erweisen. Bekanntlich gibt es manche Religionen, die nicht an einen Gott glauben, sondern an eine Mehrheit von Gottern oder Geistern oder auch an ein unbestimmtes Gottliches, eine Schicksalsmacht oder dgl. Wir werden also, damit unsere Definition auch auf diese Religionen passe, den Begriff Gott'' in einem allgemeinen Sinne zu fassen haben; sagen wir etwa so: das, woran sich der religiose Mensch gebunden fuhlt, ist eine ubernaturliche, weltbeherrschende Macht, Freilich erhebt sich auch hiergegen sofort wieder der Einwand, dass die Gotter der niederen Religionen doch nicht die Welt" beherrschen, ja dass der Wilde diesen Begriff noch gar nicht kennt. Allerdings, der Begriff Welt" in unserem Sinn, als Universum, setzt schon einen gebildeten Verstand voraus, wie wir ihn in den Anfangen der Menschheit noch nicht annehmen durfen." [...] Der Theologe Otto Pfleiderer beschreibt in seinem vorliegenden Werk Religion und Religionen.
