Download or read book Molly Zuckerman-Hartung: Comic Relief written by and published by Inventory Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cut, paste and Riot Grrrl: on the gloriously energetic paintings of Molly Zuckerman-Hartung Comic Relief is the first museum monograph of the work of artist Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, reviewing over twenty years of her art and life. Created as a catalogue for a major survey of Zuckerman-Hartung 's practice at the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston, the book acts as both a record of the exhibition and the artist's wide-ranging body of work--from her involvement in the underground punk Riot Grrrl scene to her work as a painter and creator of layered, multimedia objects. Playfully engaging the aesthetic details of Riot Grrrl zines and vintage feminist theory texts, the book serves as the first in-depth exploration and celebration of the artist's work. Taken as a whole, Comic Relief presents the art historical intersections within Zuckerman-Hartung's practice, the enduring cultural and aesthetic implications of Riot Grrrl's radical feminism, as well as broader questions about the current landscape of contemporary art, queer aesthetics, and abstract painting. In addition to dozens of images, many of which are in print for the first time, the book features a foreword by Blaffer Art Museum director Steven Matijcio and writing from Kate Nesin, a leading postwar art historian; Lisa Darms, Riot Grrrl archivist and writer; Annie Bielski, artist and former student of Zuckerman-Hartung; and Tyler Blackwell, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Associate Curator at the Blaffer.
Book Synopsis Blue Ocean Leadership (Harvard Business Review Classics) by : W. Chan Kim
Download or read book Blue Ocean Leadership (Harvard Business Review Classics) written by W. Chan Kim and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago, world-renowned professors W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne broke ground by introducing "blue ocean strategy," a new model for discovering uncontested markets that are ripe for growth. In this bound version of their bestselling Harvard Business Review classic article, they apply their concepts and tools to what is perhaps the greatest challenge of leadership: closing the gulf between the potential and the realized talent and energy of employees. Research indicates that this gulf is vast: According to Gallup, 70% of workers are disengaged from their jobs. If companies could find a way to convert them into engaged employees, the results could be transformative. The trouble is, managers lack a clear understanding of what changes they could make to bring out the best in everyone. In this article, Kim and Mauborgne offer a solution to that problem: a systematic approach to uncovering, at each level of the organization, which leadership acts and activities will inspire employees to give their all, and a process for getting managers throughout the company to start doing them. Blue ocean leadership works because the managers' "customers"--that is, the people managers oversee and report to--are involved in identifying what's effective and what isn't. Moreover, the approach doesn't require leaders to alter who they are, just to undertake a different set of tasks. And that kind of change is much easier to implement and track than changes to values and mind-sets. The Harvard Business Review Classics series offers you the opportunity to make seminal Harvard Business Review articles a part of your permanent management library. Each highly readable volume contains a groundbreaking idea that continues to shape best practices and inspire countless managers around the world--and will have a direct impact on you today and for years to come.

Book Synopsis Comic Relief by : Kathleen Marie Higgins
Download or read book Comic Relief written by Kathleen Marie Higgins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a lively and unorthodox analysis of Nietzsche by examining a neglected aspect of his scholarly personality--his sense of humor. While often thought of as ponderous and melancholy, the Nietzsche of Higgins's study is a surprisingly subtle and light-hearted writer. She presents a close reading of The Gay Science to show how the numerous literary risks that Nietzsche takes reveal humor to be central to his project. Higgins argues that his use of humor is intended to dislodge readers from their usual, somber detachment and to incite imaginative thinking.
Book Synopsis Very Funny Ladies by : Liza Donnelly
Download or read book Very Funny Ladies written by Liza Donnelly and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s no secret that most New Yorker readers flip through the magazine to look at the cartoons before they ever lay eyes on a word of the text. But what isn’t generally known is that over the decades a growing cadre of women artists have contributed to the witty, memorable cartoons that readers look forward to each week. Now Liza Donnelly, herself a renowned cartoonist with the New Yorker for more than twenty years, has written this wonderful, in-depth celebration of women cartoonists who have graced the pages of the famous magazine from the Roaring Twenties to the present day. An anthology of funny, poignant, and entertaining cartoons, biographical sketches, and social history all in one, VeryFunny Ladies offers a unique slant on 20th-century and early 21st-century America through the humorous perspectives of the talented women who have captured in pictures and captions many of the key social issues of their time. As someone who understands firsthand the cartoonist’s art, Donnelly is in a position to offer distinctive insights on the creative process, the relationships between artists and editors, what it means to be a female cartoonist, and the personalities of the other New Yorker women cartoonists, whom she has known over the years. Very Funny Ladies reveals never-before-published material from The New Yorker archives, including correspondence from Harold Ross, Katharine White, and many others. This book is history of the women of the past who drew cartoons and a celebration of the recent explosion of new talent from cartoonists who are women. Donnelly interviewed many of the living female cartoonists and some of their male counterparts: Roz Chast, Liana Finck, Amy Hwang, Victoria Roberts, Sam Gross, Lee Lorenz, Michael Maslin, Frank Modell, Bob Weber, as well as editors and writers such as David Remnick, Roger Angell, Lee Lorenz, Harriet Walden (legendary editor Harold Ross’s secretary). The New Yorker Senior Editor David Remnick and Cartoon Editor Emma Allen contributed an insightful foreword. Combining a wealth of information with an engaging and charming narrative, plus more than seventy cartoons, along with photographs and self-portraits of the cartoonists, Very Funny Ladies beautifully portrays the art and contributions of the brilliant female cartoonists in America’s greatest magazine.

Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Laughter and Humor by : John Morreall
Download or read book The Philosophy of Laughter and Humor written by John Morreall and published by Suny Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the adequacy of the traditional theories of laughter and humor, suggests revised theories, and explores such areas as the aesthetics and ethics of humor, and the relation of amusement to other mental states. Theories of laughter and humor originated in ancient times with the view that laughter is an expression of feelings of superiority over another person. This superiority theory was held by Plato, Aristotle, and Hobbes. Another aspect of laughter, noted by Aristotle and Cicero and neglected until Kant and Schopenhauer developed it into the incongruity theory, is that laughter is often a reaction to the perception of some incongruity. According to the third and latest traditional theory, the relief theory of Herbert Spencer and Freud, laughter is the venting of superfluous nervous energy. Historical examples of all these theories are presented along with hybrid theories such as those of Descartes and Bergson. The book also features traditional explorations of the place of humor in aesthetics, drama, and literature. This is the first work in the last fifty years to include the classic sources in the philosophy of humor and the first to present theories by contemporary philosophers.
