Book excerpt: English summary: According to an almost common perception, above all in Germany, the Reformation and nascent Protestantism had made a radical break with the Middle Ages. This widespread theory led to a situation which did require an explanation, i.e. the fact that in the self-understanding and the self-perception of Protestantism a gap of over a thousand years had developed which divided it not only from the Early Christian and the patristic period but which also evidently had no relationship to this millennium. This long tradition of self-understanding can no longer remain unquestioned. Thus the tremendous research efforts made in recent years make the theory of a radical gap between the Reformation and its Middle Ages and thus also the perception of Protestantism and its relationship to these seem more than questionable. This provides us with a new view of the Reformation and "its" Middle Ages.

Book Synopsis Martin Luther and the Shaping of the Catholic Tradtion by : Nelson H. Minnich
Download or read book Martin Luther and the Shaping of the Catholic Tradtion written by Nelson H. Minnich and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Martin Luther distributed his 95 Theses on indulgences on October 31, 1517, he set in motion a chain of events that profoundly transformed the face of Western Christianity. The 500th anniversary of the 95 Theses offered an opportunity to reassess the meaning of that event. The relation of the Catholic Church to the Reformation that Luther set in motion is complex. The Reformation had roots in the late-medieval Catholic tradition and the Catholic reaction to the Reformation altered Catholicism in complex ways, both positive and negative. The theology and practice of the Orthodox church also entered into the discussions. A conference entitled “Luther and the Shaping of the Catholic Tradition,” held at The Catholic University of America, with thirteen Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant speakers from Germany, Finland, France, the Vatican, and the United States addressed these issues and shed new light on the historical, theological, cultural relationship between Luther and the Catholic tradition. It contributes to deepening and extending the recent ecumenical tradition of Luther-Catholic studies.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Calvin and Calvinism by : Bruce Gordon
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Calvin and Calvinism written by Bruce Gordon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Calvin and Calvinism offers a comprehensive assessment of John Calvin and the tradition of Calvinism as it evolved from the sixteenth century to today. Featuring contributions from scholars who present the latest research on a pluriform religious movement that became a global faith. The volume focuses on key aspects of Calvin's thought and its diverse reception in Europe, the transatlantic world, Africa, South America, and Asia. Calvin's theology was from the beginning open to a wide range of interpretations and was never a static body of ideas and practices. Over the course of his life his thought evolved and deepened while retaining unresolved tensions and questions that created a legacy that was constantly evolving in different cultural contexts. Calvinism itself is an elusive term, bringing together Christian communities that claim a shared heritage but often possess radically distinct characters. The Handbook reveals fascinating patterns of continuity and change to demonstrate how the movement claimed the name of the Genevan reformer but was moulded by an extraordinary range of religious, intellectual and historical influences, from the Enlightenment and Darwinism to indigenous African beliefs and postmodernism. In its global contexts, Calvinism has been continuously reimagined and reinterpreted. This collection throws new light on the highly dynamic and fluid nature of a deeply influential form of Christianity.

Book Synopsis Forerunners of the Reformation by : Heiko A. Oberman
Download or read book Forerunners of the Reformation written by Heiko A. Oberman and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 2003-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oberman's magisterial work transfers discussion of late medieval Christian thought from the private studies of the specialist to more general use and understanding, and explains the significance of the ideas of the time. Although this 'Late Medieval Reader' does not exhaust the riches of the period between the High Middle Ages and the Reformation era, it introduces the reader to aspects of such major themes as conciliarism, curialism, mysticism, scholasticism, the spirituality of the Devotio Moderna, and the impact of Renaissance humanism. The theme of the Forerunners has grown out of the consideration that the justified rejection of a confessional reading of the past has been succeeded by an equally unhistorical disjunction of the Medieval and Reformation periods. Without a grasp of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the medieval basis of modern thought is incomplete, since Reformation and Counter Reformation seem to arise 'out of the blue'.
Book Synopsis Aquinas Among the Protestants by : Manfred Svensson
Download or read book Aquinas Among the Protestants written by Manfred Svensson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AQUINAS AMONG THE PROTESTANTS This major new book provides an introduction to Thomas Aquinas’s influence on Protestantism. The editors, both noted commentators on Aquinas, bring together a group of influential scholars to demonstrate the ways that Anglican, Lutheran, and Reformed thinkers have analyzed and used Thomas through the centuries. Later chapters also explore how today’s Protestants might appropriate the work of Aquinas to address a number of contemporary theological and philosophical issues. The authors set the record straight and disavow the widespread impression that Aquinas is an irrelevant figure for the history of Protestant thought. This assumption has dominated not only Protestant historiography but also Roman Catholic accounts of the Reformation and Protestant intellectual life. The book opens the possibility for contemporary reception, engagement, and critique and even intra-Protestant relations and includes: Information on the fruitful appropriation of Aquinas in Anglican, Lutheran, and Reformed theologians over the centuries Important essays from leading scholars on the teachings of Aquinas New perspectives on Thomas Aquinas’s position as a towering figure in the history of Christian thought Aquinas Among the Protestants is a ground-breaking and interdenominational work for students and scholars of Thomas Aquinas and theology more generally.

Book Synopsis The Council of Trent: Reform and Controversy in Europe and Beyond (1545-1700) by : Wim François
Download or read book The Council of Trent: Reform and Controversy in Europe and Beyond (1545-1700) written by Wim François and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exactly 450 years after the solemn closure of the Council of Trent on 4 December 1563, scholars from diverse regional, disciplinary and confessional backgrounds convened in Leuven to reflect upon the impact of this Council, not only in Europe but also beyond. Their conclusions are to be found in these three impressive volumes. Bridging different generations of scholarship, the authors reassess in a first volume Tridentine views on the Bible, theology and liturgy, as well as their reception by Protestants, deconstructing many myths surviving in scholarship and society alike. They also deal with the mechanisms 'Rome' developed to hold a grip on the Council's implementation. The second volume analyzes the changes in local ecclesiastical life, initiated by bishops, orders and congregations, and the political strife and confessionalisation accompanying this reform process. The third and final volume examines the afterlife of Trent in arts and music, as well as in the global impact of Trent through missions.
Book Synopsis Apprehending Love by : Pekka Karkkainen
Download or read book Apprehending Love written by Pekka Karkkainen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects together articles which engage a variety of themes related to human and divine love. The title of this book “apprehending love” employs the notion of apprehensio and especially its medieval background. For example, Martin Luther built his understanding of justification around this concept, which, on the one hand, refers to intellectual comprehension but, on the other hand, means becoming one with the object itself. In faith, Christ becomes not only the outward object of our faith, but its proper subject. In a similar way, when we love someone or something, we are transformed according to the object of our love.

Download or read book Die deutsche Reformation zwischen Spätmittelalter und Früher Neuzeit written by Thomas A. Brady and published by De Gruyter Oldenbourg. This book was released on 2001 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
