Book excerpt: "The focus is on the study of important oldest genres, liturgical books and distinguished men of letters revealing the compilation of different practices and languages. It is done for the first time. For the first time also, are introduced newly found sources, some of which are unique, and unknown men of letters with their contribution to the field of Eastern Orthodox chant. The book gives a possibility of the reader to have various medieval sources in different languages in one place. The topics discussed are from the entire history of Eastern chant - from the ninth to the nineteenth century. They are studied on the ground of a complex interdisciplinary approach. The book consists of 16 topics, grouped in 4 chapters. The author discusses unknown or not well-known topics of the history of Eastern Orthodox church chant. The aim of the book is to present the Eastern chant as a phase in the evolution of Mediterranean art, which in fact is the cradle of our common Graeco-Roman heritage. The complex study of genres, liturgical books and the work of distinguished men of letters of this chant shows its ability to compile various traditions in different languages and national practices, to contaminate their wealth in order to strengthen the Christian faith during the Middle Ages and the early Balkan National Revival. The book's audience will include everyone interested in liturgical musical books, liturgy and chant repertory. Likewise, it will include those engaged in the study of medieval and the early Balkan National Revival music and liturgical history"--

Book Synopsis Orientalism, Masquerade and Mozart's Turkish Music by : Matthew Head
Download or read book Orientalism, Masquerade and Mozart's Turkish Music written by Matthew Head and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew Head explores the cultural meanings of Mozart's Turkish music in the composer's 18th-century context, in subsequent discourses of Mozart's significance for 'Western' culture, and in today's (not entirely) post-colonial world. Unpacking the ideological content of Mozart's numerous representations of Turkey and Turkish music, Head locates the composer's exoticisms in shifting power relations between the Austrian and Ottoman Empires, and in an emerging orientalist project. At the same time, Head complicates a presentist post-colonial critique by exploring commercial stimuli to Mozart's turquerie, and by embedding the composer's orientalism in practices of self-disguise epitomised by masquerade and carnival. In this context, Mozart's Turkish music offered fleeting liberation from official and proscribed identities of the bourgeois Enlightenment.

Book Synopsis Focus: Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe by : Philip V. Bohlman
Download or read book Focus: Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe written by Philip V. Bohlman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two decades after the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and one decade into the twenty-first century, European music remains one of the most powerful forces for shaping nationalism. Using intensive fieldwork throughout Europe -- from participation in alpine foot pilgrimages to studies of the grandest music spectacle anywhere in the world, the Eurovision Song Contest -- Philip V. Bohlman reveals the ways in which music and nationalism intersect in the shaping of the New Europe. Focus: Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe begins with the emergence of the European nation-state in the Middle Ages and extends across long periods during which Europe’s nations used music to compete for land and language, and to expand the colonial reach of Europe to the entire world. Bohlman contrasts the "national" and the "nationalist" in music, examining the ways in which their impact on society can be positive and negative -- beneficial for European cultural policy and dangerous in times when many European borders are more fragile than ever. The New Europe of the twenty-first century is more varied, more complex, and more politically volatile than ever, and its music resonates fully with these transformations.
Book Synopsis The Life and Works of Gottlieb Muffat (1690-1770) by : Alison J. Dunlop
Download or read book The Life and Works of Gottlieb Muffat (1690-1770) written by Alison J. Dunlop and published by Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gottlieb Muffat (1690-1770) has been heralded as one of the first composers of keyboard music to display 'distinctly Austrian traits'. In light of both the extent and quality of his œuvre, he was undoubtedly the single most important composer of keyboard music in Vienna in the first half of the eighteenth century. A prodigious child, he performed for the Emperor when he was around ten years old and his formative years were shaped by two of the most renowned composers of the period: his father Georg and Johann Joseph Fux. Muffat served as organist at the Viennese imperial court for over half a century and was responsible for teaching several members of the imperial family. This book explores both his career and quotidian existence and presents much hitherto unknown information about other members of this musical family. A thematic catalogue, which includes descriptions of all known manuscript sources of his music, comprises the second part of this study and serves to highlight the significance of his output and the reception and transmission of his work.
Book Synopsis A Seventeenth-Century Odyssey in East Central Europe by : Gábor Kármán
Download or read book A Seventeenth-Century Odyssey in East Central Europe written by Gábor Kármán and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Seventeenth-Century Odyssey Gábor Kármán reconstructs the life story of a lesser-known Hungarian orientalist, Jakab Harsányi Nagy. The discussion of his activities as a school teacher in Transylvania, as a diplomat and interpreter at the Sublime Porte, as a secretary of a Moldavian voivode in exile, as well as a court councillor of Friedrich Wilhelm, the Great Elector of Brandenburg not only sheds light upon the extraordinarily versatile career of this individual, but also on the variety of circles in which he lived. Gábor Kármán also gives the first historical analysis of Harsányi’s contribution to Turkish studies, the Colloquia Familiaria Turcico-latina (1672).
