Book Synopsis The Ethics of Ornament in Early Modern Naples by : J.Nicholas Napoli
Download or read book The Ethics of Ornament in Early Modern Naples written by J.Nicholas Napoli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carthusian monks at San Martino began a series of decorative campaigns in the 1580s that continued until 1757, transforming the church of their monastery, the Certosa di San Martino, into a jewel of marble revetment, painting, and sculpture. The aesthetics of the church generate a jarring moral conflict: few religious orders honored the ideals of poverty and simplicity so ardently yet decorated so sumptuously. In this study, Nick Napoli explores the terms of this conflict and of how it sought resolution amidst the social and economic realities and the political and religious culture of early modern Naples. Napoli mines the documentary record of the decorative campaigns at San Martino, revealing the rich testimony it provides relating to both the monks? and the artists? expectations of how practice and payment should transpire. From these documents, the author delivers insight into the ethical and economic foundations of artistic practice in early modern Naples. The first English-language study of a key monument in Naples and the first to situate the complex within the cultural history of the city, The Ethics of Ornament in Early Modern Naples sheds new light on the Neapolitan baroque, industries of art in the age before capitalism, and the relation of art, architecture, and ornament.

Book Synopsis Reading in the Wilderness by : Jessica Brantley
Download or read book Reading in the Wilderness written by Jessica Brantley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as twenty-first-century technologies like blogs and wikis have transformed the once private act of reading into a public enterprise, devotional reading experiences in the Middle Ages were dependent upon an oscillation between the solitary and the communal. In Reading in the Wilderness, Jessica Brantley uses tools from both literary criticism and art history to illuminate Additional MS 37049, an illustrated Carthusian miscellany housed in the British Library. This revealing artifact, Brantley argues, closes the gap between group spectatorship and private study in late medieval England. Drawing on the work of W. J. T. Mitchell, Michael Camille, and others working at the image-text crossroads, Reading in the Wilderness addresses the manuscript’s texts and illustrations to examine connections between reading and performance within the solitary monk’s cell and also outside. Brantley reimagines the medieval codex as a site where the meanings of images and words are performed, both publicly and privately, in the act of reading.
Book Synopsis East Anglia's History by : Christopher Harper-Bill
Download or read book East Anglia's History written by Christopher Harper-Bill and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Anglia's political and economic importance in the middle ages is plain for all to see, stemming initially from its crucial position on the eastern shores of the North Sea and its participation in the successive patterns of invasion and settlement of England. Archaeological evidence abounds: burial mounds, castles, great churches deriving from the wealth created by sheep, yeoman farmhouses, and market towns of eighteenth-century elegance. Behind these visible manifestations of the march of centuries lie particular histories, and these seventeen studies from the region's best scholars reveal some of those jigsaw puzzles of time, ranging from the Domesday herring industry by way of monasteries, memorials, wills, Gainsborough and garden history to the growing passion for natural history and science in the mid nineteenth century. They make a serious contribution to an understanding of the region, and at the same time honour Norman Scarfe, whose own studies have played a notable part in the interpretation of East Anglia's history. Contributors JOHN BLATCHLY, JAMES CAMPBELL, CHRISTOPHER HARPER-BILL, CAROLE RAWCLIFFE, DAVID DYMOND, PETER NORTHEAST, COLIN RICHMOND, JUDITH MIDDLETON-STEWART, DIARMAID MacCULLOCH, HASSELL SMITH, TOM WILLIAMSON, EDWARD MARTIN, JONATHAN THEOBALD, RICHARD WILSON, HUGH BELSEY, STEVEN PLUNKETT, GEOFFREY MARTIN, MICHAEL HOWARD.

Book Synopsis Medieval Authorship and Cultural Exchange in the Late Fifteenth Century by : Rombert Stapel
Download or read book Medieval Authorship and Cultural Exchange in the Late Fifteenth Century written by Rombert Stapel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Authorship and Cultural Exchange in the Late Fifteenth Century is a multidisciplinary study of late medieval authorship and the military orders, framed as a whodunit that uncovers the anonymous author of the ‘Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order’. Through a close analysis of the Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order and its manuscripts, and by exploiting a wide range of scholarly techniques, from traditional philology and extensive codicological examinations to modern digital humanities techniques, the book argues that the recently resurfaced Vienna manuscript is actually an author’s copy, written in direct cooperation with the original author. This important assertion leads to a reinterpretation of the text, its sources and composition, authorship, and the context in which it was conceived. It allows us to associate the text with an upsurge of historiographical activities by various military orders across the continent, seemingly in response to the publication and aggressive dissemination of the account of the Siege of Rhodes by Guillaume Caoursin in 1480. Furthermore, the text can be positioned at the crossroads between different cultural spheres, ranging from the Baltic region to the Low Countries, spanning French, German, Dutch, and Latin linguistic traditions. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval history, as well as those interested in cultural history and the military religious orders.

Book Synopsis Print Culture and Peripheries in Early Modern Europe by : Benito Rial Costas
Download or read book Print Culture and Peripheries in Early Modern Europe written by Benito Rial Costas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that, if only by number, small and peripheral cities played an important role in fifteenth and sixteenth-century European print culture, book history has mainly been dominated by monographs on individual big book centres. Through a number of specific case studies, which deploy a variety of methods and a wide range of sources, this volume seeks to enhance our understanding of printing and the book trade in small and peripheral European cities in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and to emphasize the necessity of new research for the study of print culture in such cities.

Book Synopsis The London Charterhouse by : Bruno Barber
Download or read book The London Charterhouse written by Bruno Barber and published by Mola (Museum of London Archaeology). This book was released on 2002 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the latest in the series of MoLAS monographs on the religious houses of medieval London, considers the London Charterhouse, a Carthusian monastery founded in 1371, just outside the walled city. The volume is primarily intended to report on the 1998 excavations in Preachers Court, part of the Inner Court of the Charterhouse, but also incorporates a reassessment of Grimes' post-war work, and the results of numerous small excavations, evaluations and watching briefs conducted within the monastic precinct between 1998 and 2000. The result is a new, fully illustrated account of the development of the entire monastery, with a particular focus on its service areas. Separate discussions examine the pre-monastic use of the site as one of London's Black Death cemeteries, diet within the monastery, the monastic economy, and the impact of the sub-urban location on the reclusive Carthusian order. Evidence for the post-Dissolution period - the wider setting of the 16th century mansion and the hospital established in 1613/14 - is also examined, in this look at one of London's most fascinating historic sites.
