Book Synopsis Science Education Research and Practice in Europe by : Doris Jorde
Download or read book Science Education Research and Practice in Europe written by Doris Jorde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each volume in the 7-volume series The World of Science Education reviews research in a key region of the world. These regions include North America, South and Latin America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, Arab States, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The focus of this Handbook is on science education in Europe. In producing this volume the editors have invited a range of authors to describe their research in the context of developments in the continent and further afield. In reading this book you are invited to consider the historical, social and political contexts that have driven developments in science education research over the years. A unique feature of science education in Europe is the impact of the European Union on research and development over many years. A growing number of multi-national projects have contributed to the establishment of a community of researchers increasingly accepting of methodological diversity. That is not to say that Europe is moving towards homogeneity, as this volume clearly shows.
Book Synopsis Bounding Uncertainty in Civil Engineering by : Alberto Bernardini
Download or read book Bounding Uncertainty in Civil Engineering written by Alberto Bernardini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an engineering, rather than a mathematical, approach, Bounding uncertainty in Civil Engineering - Theoretical Background deals with the mathematical theories that use convex sets of probability distributions to describe the input data and/or the final response of systems. The particular point of view of the authors is centered on the applications to civil engineering problems, and the theory of random sets has been adopted as a basic and relatively simple model. However, the authors have tried to elucidate its connections to the more general theory of imprecise probabilities, Choquet capacities, fuzzy sets, p-boxes, convex sets of parametric probability distributions, and approximate reasoning both in one dimension and in several dimensions with associated joint spaces. If choosing the theory of random sets may lead to some loss of generality, it has, on the other hand, allowed for a self-contained selection of the topics and a more unified presentation of the theoretical contents and algorithms. With over 80 examples worked out step by step, the book should assist newcomers to the subject (who may otherwise find it difficult to navigate a vast and dispersed literature) in applying the techniques described to their own specific problems.

Download or read book A Theory of Harmony written by Ernst Levy and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Levy was a visionary Swiss pianist, composer, and teacher who developed an approach to music theory that has come to be known as "negative harmony." Levy's theories have had a wide influence, from young British performer/composer Jacob Collier to jazz musicians like Steve Coleman. His posthumous text, A Theory of Harmony, summarizes his innovative ideas. A Theory of Harmony is a highly original explanation of the harmonic language of the modern era, illuminating the approaches of diverse styles of music. By breaking through age-old conceptions, Levy was able to reorient the way we experience musical harmony. British composer/music pedagogue Paul Wilkinson has written a new introduction that offers multiple points of entry to Levy’s work to make this text more accessible for a new generation of students, performers, and theorists. He relates Levy's work to innovations in improvisation, jazz, twentieth-century classical music, and the theoretical writings of a wide range of musical mavericks, including Harry Partch, Hugo Riemann, and David Lewin. Wilkinson shows how A Theory of Harmony continues to inspire original musical expression across multiple musical genres.
Book Synopsis Working with Violence by : Carol Lupton
Download or read book Working with Violence written by Carol Lupton and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 1994 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely text examines the experience of feminists working with the effects of men's violence in a range of key areas: with rape survivors, with battered wives, with women whose children have been sexually abused, with prostitutes and with male abusers. Central policy changes and a multi-faceted political backlash have created new pressures for those committed to feminist practice. In each key area, the book explores the nature and impact of these changes for autonomous women's groups and for feminists working in, or with, a variety of social, medical or criminal justice agencies.
Book Synopsis Thin-Layer Chromatography for Binding Media Analysis by : Mary F. Striegel
Download or read book Thin-Layer Chromatography for Binding Media Analysis written by Mary F. Striegel and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1997-04-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the study and conservation of art and artifacts, natural organic materials are frequently encountered in components such as coatings, binders, and adhesives. The identification of these materials is often crucial to the attempt to characterize the technologies employed by artists or craftspeople, understand the processes and causes of deterioration, and plan appropriate conservation treatments. Yet the limited resources of many conservation laboratories put many analysis techniques beyond their reach. Thin-layer chromatography can help fill this gap. The volume consists of a handbook, protocols, and guide to reference materials. The handbook serves as a primer for the basic application of thin-layer chromatography to the analysis of binding media, adhesives, and coatings found on cultural objects; the protocols provide step-by-step instructions for the laboratory procedures involved in typical analyses; and the guide to reference materials aids in the understanding of the types of materials and documentation needed for accurate analyses by thin-layer chromatography.
Book Synopsis Structural Functions of Harmony by : Arnold Schoenberg

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is Schoenberg's last completed theoretical work and represents his final thoughts on the subject of classical and romantic harmony. The earlier chapters recapitulate in condensed form the principles laid down in his 'Theory of Harmony'; the later chapters break entirely new ground, for they analyze the system of key relationships within the structure of whole movements and affirm the principle of 'monotonality, ' showing how all modulations within a movement are merely deviations from, and not negations of, its main tonality.

Book excerpt: Released from his prison of incrustation, having rested on the ocean floor for thousands of years, the bronze statue of an athlete stands in a quietly arrogant pose, having just placed an olive crown—the symbol of victory in the Olympic Games—on his head. In this monograph devoted to the Getty Bronze, Dr. Frel analyzes the technique and style that point to its attribution to the great fourth-century Greek sculptor Lysippos. The conservation of the bronze, its possible identity as a Hellenistic prince, and its place in Lysippos’s oeuvre are discussed.
