Download or read book Categories written by Giuseppe D' Anna and published by Georg Olms Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. ********* This is the second volume devoted to the history of the question of categories, an issue which was also the focus of the collective volume published in 2017. The aim is still to describe some trajectories and perspectives of this history, without claiming an exhaustive overview of it, but rather representing a contribution to a wider project, which is gradually reaching its goal. In this volume the problem of categories has been investigated in the work of further philosophers, from Plato to Quine; in this way the present work complements that done in the first volume. The question of categories has been dealt with in different times and contexts, sometimes coming into the foreground and sometimes concealing itself—and this is something worthy of investigation in itself. It is also interesting to understand why in particular contexts greater attention is paid to a particular issue that had previously lost its centrality.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, Volume 3 by : Ernst Cassirer
Download or read book The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, Volume 3 written by Ernst Cassirer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In his Phenomenology of Cognition, Cassirer provides a comprehensive and systematic account of the dynamic process involved in the whole of human culture as it progresses from the world of myth and its feeling of social belonging to the highest abstractions of mathematics, logic and theoretical physics. Cassirer engages with the most sophisticated and cutting-edge work in fields ranging from ethnology to classics, egyptology and assyriology to ethology, brain science and psychology to logic, mathematics and theoretical physics. His command of philosophy, literature, and the arts is superb. Echoing his work on Kant, Cassirer begins The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms with the problem posed by the meaning of being for philosophy since Plato. But Cassirer also shows that this problem gains new significance with Kant and with the development of modern culture. Cassirer weaves his conception of the development of knowledge into a broadly Kantian and German idealist dynamic-historical conception of significance and of experience that refuses to accept a fundamental opposition between literary, philosophical and scientific culture. In consequence of his great vision grounded in careful reflection and argument, Cassirer’s systematic conception of the Copernican cosmopolitan-cosmological revolution is still philosophically and scientifically unmatched in contemporary philosophy on both sides of the Atlantic and of the Pacific.” Pierre Keller, Professor of Philosophy, University of California, Riverside, USA. This new translation makes Cassirer’s seminal work available to a new generation of scholars. Each volume includes a translator’s introduction by Steve G. Lofts, a foreword by Peter E. Gordon, a glossary of key terms, and an index.
Book Synopsis The Anthem Companion to Norbert Elias by : Stephen Mennell
Download or read book The Anthem Companion to Norbert Elias written by Stephen Mennell and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an authoritative assessment of Norbert Elias (1897–1990). It recognizes Elias as one of the major contributors to the development of sociological tradition in the past century and charts the continuing relevance of his conception of sociology for contemporary society. Only toward the end of his career as an academic did Elias’s work begin to attract the attention of English-speaking sociologists, historians, and scholars of cultural studies. The book provides an authoritative and broad representation of Elias’s oeuvre and work inspired by it. While Elias is best known for his major study of The Civilizing Process, the reach and subtle depths of Elias’s conception of process sociology has been cemented more recently by the English-language publication of Elias’s collected work of 18 volumes. The baton of process sociology is being passed on to further generations of sociologists. Chapters from leading contributors outline the nature of the sociological practice of Elias and address fundamental questions of historical sociology, democratization, gender, racialization processes, and embodiment. Later chapters highlight the contribution of process sociology for understanding developments in nation, state and global sociology, criminology, art, and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symbolic Forms has long been considered the greatest of Cassirer's works. Into it he poured all the resources of his vast learning about language and myth, religion, art, and science--the various creative symbolizing activities and constructions through which man has expressed himself and given intelligible objective form to this experience. "These three volumes alone (apart from Cassirer's other papers and books) make an outstanding contribution to epistemology and to the human power of abstraction. It is rather as if 'The Golden Bough' had been written in philosophical rather than in historical terms."--F.I.G. Rawlins, Nature

Book Synopsis Heideggerian Marxism by : Herbert Marcuse
Download or read book Heideggerian Marxism written by Herbert Marcuse and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frankfurt School philosopher Herbert Marcuse (1898–1979) studied with Martin Heidegger at Freiburg University from 1928 to 1932 and completed a dissertation on Hegel’s theory of historicity under Heidegger’s supervision. During these years, Marcuse wrote a number of provocative philosophical essays experimenting with the possibilities of Heideggerian Marxism. For a time he believed that Heidegger’s ideas could revitalize Marxism, providing a dimension of experiential concreteness that was sorely lacking in the German Idealist tradition. Ultimately, two events deterred Marcuse from completing this program: the 1932 publication of Marx’s early economic and philosophical manuscripts, and Heidegger’s conversion to Nazism a year later. Heideggerian Marxism offers rich and fascinating testimony concerning the first attempt to fuse Marxism and existentialism. These essays offer invaluable insight concerning Marcuse’s early philosophical evolution. They document one of the century’s most important Marxist philosophers attempting to respond to the “crisis of Marxism”: the failure of the European revolution coupled with the growing repression in the USSR. In response, Marcuse contrived an imaginative and original theoretical synthesis: “existential Marxism.”

Book Synopsis Logic: The Question of Truth by : Martin Heidegger
Download or read book Logic: The Question of Truth written by Martin Heidegger and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2024 translation of Martin Heidegger's early work "Logic: The Question of Truth" (original German "Logik Die Frage Nach der Wahrheit"), originally published in 1925. This edition contains a new afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Heidegger's life and works, a philosophic index of core Heideggerian concepts and a guide for terminology across 19th and 20th century Existentialists. This translation is designed for readability and accessibility to Heidegger's enigmatic and dense philosophy. Complex and specific philosophic terms are translated as literally as possible and academic footnotes have been removed to ensure easy reading. In the winter term of 1925/26, Martin Heidegger gave a four-hour lecture on logic in Marburg a. L., in which he deviated from his original plan as the work progressed. He contrasted traditional logic with his own concept of philosophical logic, a logic of truth that inquires into the λόγος. Heidegger analysed the contemporary state of logic, focusing in particular on Husserl's "Logical Investigations" and Husserl's opposition to psychologism. The first part of his lecture revisited Aristotle's interpretation of truth, especially the complex chapter Θ 10 of Metaphysics. The second part discussed the question of truth in the context of the analysis of Being, with an emphasis on the theme of time, including an interpretation of Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason". This work formed the core of his later work "Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics", with more detailed individual analyses. Addressing the concept of truth within the framework of phenomenological and existential philosophy, Heidegger presents a sophisticated investigation into the nature and essence of truth. The focus of the paper is not merely to answer what truth is in the conventional sense, but to probe deeper into the existential and phenomenological aspects of truth, questioning its very foundation and nature in human understanding and experience. This involves a critical analysis of the relationship between language, thought, and reality, and how these elements interact to constitute what we understand as truth. Heidegger's exploration of these themes is not merely an intellectual exercise; it reflects his broader philosophical project of understanding the nature of Being.
Download or read book Who One Is written by J.G. Hart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both volumes of this work have as their central concern to sort out who one is from what one is. In this Book 1, the focus is on transcendental-phenomenological ontology. When we refer to ourselves we refer both non-ascriptively in regard to non-propertied as well as ascriptively in regard to propertied aspects of ourselves. The latter is the richness of our personal being; the former is the essentially elusive central concern of this Book 1: I can be aware of myself and refer to myself without it being necessary to think of any third-personal characteristic; indeed one may be aware of oneself without having to be aware of anything except oneself. This consideration opens the door to basic issues in phenomenological ontology, such as identity, individuation, and substance. In our knowledge and love of Others we find symmetry with the first-person self-knowledge, both in its non-ascriptive forms as well as in its property-ascribing forms. Love properly has for its referent the Other as present through but beyond her properties. Transcendental-phenomenological reflections move us to consider paradoxes of the “transcendental person”. For example, we contend with the unpresentability in the transcendental first-person of our beginning or ending and the undeniable evidence for the beginning and ending of persons in our third-person experience. The basic distinction between oneself as non-sortal and as a person pervaded by properties serves as a hinge for reflecting on “the afterlife”. This transcendental-phenomenological ontology of necessity deals with some themes of the philosophy of religion.
