Zunächst wird Georgisch als Schriftsprache der kartwelischen Sprachen behandelt, im nächsten Schritt soll der Frage nach der Entstehung und Entwicklung des georgischen Alphabets und der georgischen Schrift nachgegangen werden. Anschließend wird die moderne georgische Schrift dargestellt. Zum Schluss folgt eine kurze Zusammenfassung. Die gegenwärtige georgische Kultur ist ihrem Charakter nach eine der ältesten christlichen Kulturen der Erde mit allen für eine solche Kultur eigentümlichen und spezifischen Merkmalen, an denen die Georgier auch heute noch festhalten. Dies alles kommt vor allem in der georgischen Schrift zum Ausdruck, in der alten sowie in der neuen. Das Schrifttum bildet eine der spezifischen Äußerungen der nationalen Kultur des Volkes (vgl. Dsidsiguri 1973, S.13). Die Christianisierung Iberiens (von den Georgiern auch ,,Kartlis” genannt) führte zur endgültigen Herausbildung des georgischen nationalen Alphabets. Einige Forscher sind der Ansicht, dass das georgische Alphabet in der vorchristlichen Epoche unter dem Einfluss der semitischen Schrift entstanden ist; andere glauben an eine Herkunft aus der griechischen Schrift und begründen diese Sichtweise mit dem Einfluss der christlichen Kultur (vgl. Lordkipanidze 1994, S. 33). Die Tatsachen sprechen dafür, dass sowohl für das Georgische als auch für das Armenische ein individuelles Schriftsystem existiert, das den lautlichen Besonderheiten der jeweiligen Sprache gerecht wird. Hierauf basiert ein großer Teil des kulturellen Selbstbewusstseins der Angehörigen beider Nationen. Harald Haarmann nennt das armenische und georgische Alphabet in seiner Universalgeschichte der Schrift eine ,,Ausnahmeerscheinung“ (Haarmann 1994, S. 355) in der Schriftgeschichte. Da die Georgier nicht die Analyseleistung der Griechen vollbracht hätten, die sprachliche Äußerungen in kleinste Einheiten zerlegten und entsprechende schriftliche Zeichen verwendeten, plädiert Haarmann dafür, die Entstehung des georgischen Alphabets nicht als ,,Erfindung“, sondern als ,,Neuschöpfung“ (ebd.) zu bezeichnen.

Im Kapitel 3 wird die für diese Arbeit möglichst ausführliche typologische Charakterisierung (Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax) der georgischen Sprache vorgenommen, um die Veranschaulichung der Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschieden zu der deutschen Sprache zu erzielen. Darauf aufbauen werden in dem Kapitel 4 am Beispiel einer von georgischen Muttersprachlerin erfassten Textproduktion die konkreten Fehler und deren Gründe analysiert. Abschließend erfolgt das Fazit und ein kurzer Ausblick auf das Ziel dieser Arbeit.
