Download or read book Black Athena written by Martin Bernal and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1990 American Book Award What is classical about Classical civilization? In one of the most audacious works of scholarship ever written, Martin Bernal challenges the foundation of our thinking about this question. Classical civilization, he argues, has deep roots in Afroasiatic cultures. But these Afroasiatic influences have been systematically ignored, denied or suppressed since the eighteenth century—chiefly for racist reasons. The popular view is that Greek civilization was the result of the conquest of a sophisticated but weak native population by vigorous Indo-European speakers—Aryans—from the North. But the Classical Greeks, Bernal argues, knew nothing of this “Aryan model.” They did not see their institutions as original, but as derived from the East and from Egypt in particular. This long-awaited third and final volume of the series is concerned with the linguistic evidence that contradicts the Aryan Model of ancient Greece. Bernal shows how nearly 40 percent of the Greek vocabulary has been plausibly derived from two Afroasiatic languages – Ancient Egyptian and West Semitic. He also reveals how these derivations are not limited to matters of trade, but extended to the sophisticated language of politics, religion, and philosophy. This evidence, according to Bernal, greatly strengthens the hypothesis that in Greece an Indo-European-speaking population was culturally dominated by Ancient Egyptian and West Semitic speakers. Provocative, passionate, and colossal in scope, this volume caps a thoughtful rewriting of history that has been stirring academic and political controversy since the publication of the first volume.

Book Synopsis Intolerance And the Gospel by : Gerd Ludemann
Download or read book Intolerance And the Gospel written by Gerd Ludemann and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Christians usually suppose that Christianity is quite congenial to the democratic ideals that are the basis of free, open Western societies. Among these ideals is freedom of religion, which encourages a broad tolerance for different belief systems. Nonetheless, a careful examination of core Christian beliefs and the history of Christianity reveal little tolerance for thinking or acting outside the orthodox Christian tradition. In this enlightening analysis of key New Testament texts, historian of early Christianity Gerd Lüdemann discusses the inherently intolerant attitude that has characterized monotheistic belief systems generally and Christianity in particular. As Lüdemann points out, Christianity evolved within the context of the pluralistic Roman Empire, which generally allowed separate belief systems as long as political allegiance to the Roman state was never questioned. Ironically, Christians inherited their essential intolerance from Judaism, whose first commandment is the expression of a jealous God: "I am the Lord your God.... Thou shalt have no other gods before me." After Christianity became the state religion of Rome, tolerance disappeared and did not reappear on the world stage until the European Enlightenment of the 18th century.Besides the discussion of these issues, Lüdemann presents a textual analysis in five chapters of some of the letters in the New Testament. In each case he translates the letter, presents textual commentary, and demonstrates how the text reflects Christian intolerance of heretics and nonbelievers. In conclusion, Lüdemann suggests that attempts to harmonize Christianity with the democratic ideal of tolerance cannot really work because there is a logical contradiction.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Reception History of the Bible by : Michael Lieb
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Reception History of the Bible written by Michael Lieb and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, reception history has become an increasingly important and controversial topic of discussion in biblical studies. Rather than attempting to recover the original meaning of biblical texts, reception history focuses on exploring the history of interpretation. In doing so it locates the dominant historical-critical scholarly paradigm within the history of interpretation, rather than over and above it. At the same time, the breadth of material and hermeneutical issues that reception history engages with questions any narrow understanding of the history of the Bible and its effects on faith communities. The challenge that reception history faces is to explore tradition without either reducing its meaning to what faith communities think is important, or merely offering anthologies of interesting historical interpretations. This major new handbook addresses these matters by presenting reception history as an enterprise (not a method) that questions and understands tradition afresh. The Oxford Handbook of the Reception History of the Bible consciously allows for the interplay of the traditional and the new through a two-part structure. Part I comprises a set of essays surveying the outline, form, and content of twelve key biblical books that have been influential in the history of interpretation. Part II offers a series of in-depth case studies of the interpretation of particular key biblical passages or books with due regard for the specificity of their social, cultural or aesthetic context. These case studies span two millennia of interpretation by readers with widely differing perspectives. Some are at the level of a group response (from Gnostic readings of Genesis, to Post-Holocaust Jewish interpretations of Job); others examine individual approaches to texts (such as Augustine and Pelagius on Romans, or Gandhi on the Sermon on the Mount). Several chapters examine historical moments, such as the 1860 debate over Genesis and evolution, while others look to wider themes such as non-violence or millenarianism. Further chapters study in detail the works of popular figures who have used the Bible to provide inspiration for their creativity, from Dante and Handel, to Bob Dylan and Dan Brown.
Book Synopsis Paul the Letter-Writer and the Second Letter to Timothy by : Michael Prior
Download or read book Paul the Letter-Writer and the Second Letter to Timothy written by Michael Prior and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1989-03-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues for new perspectives on the letters of Paul, especially the Second Letter to Timothy. It examines striking aspects of Paul's letters, especially the fact that many of them are co-authored, that six of them acknowledge that a secretary has penned the letter, and that 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus are the only ones addressed to individuals. It investigates the implications of these facts for the concept of Pauline authorship. Prior maintains that the received arguments, statistical as well as literary, which exclude 2 Timothy from the influence of Paul, are less than convincing. The author suggests an original reading of 2 Timothy arguing it was composed by Paul towards the end of his first Roman imprisonment. Contrary to all interpretations of the letter which argue that Paul was about to be martyred, Prior claims that Paul was confident that he would be released, and was assembling a mission team to bring his proclamation of the Gospel to a completion. Timothy's courage and missionary zeal needed rekindling, for he and Mark were to be key figures in this new team.
Book Synopsis Jesus the Liberator by : Michael Prior
Download or read book Jesus the Liberator written by Michael Prior and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1995 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of Liberation Theology has coincided with an increase in interest in Luke's concern for the poor. This has been the subject of a number of special studies, and this new one argues for an application of the spirit of the text to contemporary society, uniting a respect for the methods of New Testament study with a commitment to social change enlivened by its values. This book is the first monograph which deals with this major New Testament text. While it engages with the most recent New Testament scholarship, it is written with a wide readership in mind. Prior examines the efforts to situate the traditions about Jesus and the evangelization of the poor in the life of Luke's community. He does not stop there, but insists that enquiry into the Gospel of Luke must concern itself with the place of the text in contemporary society. Sensitive to the concerns of biblical scholarship, this challenging exegesis respects the faith perspective that the Word of God is alive and active, and calls for a response in every generation.

Book Synopsis The History of Early Christianity by : Niels Hyldahl
Download or read book The History of Early Christianity written by Niels Hyldahl and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1997 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book endeavours to treat the historical origin and development of early Christianity within the framework of Jewish history and religion. The span of time covered is from around 175 B.C. to around A.D. 150. Compared with the numerous treatments of the religious, political, social and cultural factors surrounding early Christianity («Neutestamentliche Zeitgeschichte»), the main issue of this book is Christianity itself in its development from Judaism in Antiquity to its establishment as an organized movement no longer directly dependent on contemporary Judaism.
