Book excerpt: "The modern literary critic", T. S. Eliot wrote in 1929, "must be an 'experimenter' outside of what you might at first consider his own province; [...] there is no literary problem which does not lead us irresistibly to larger problems." This book follows Eliot's principle and situates his literary and critical work in a wide context that reveals manifold links between aesthetics, ethics, politics and epistemology: the historical context of early-twentieth-century idealism, vitalism and pragmatism, especially the intensely political Bergsonian controversy, and the modern context of the philosophies of Charles Taylor, Michel Foucault and Richard Rorty. 'Knowledge', it argues, was verbalised in the modernist age, individualised into the act of 'knowing', an act with motives and goals, and thus introduced into the realm of ethics - a process central to twentieth-century thought. Eliot's poems especially, constructed as "a life composed", a literary lifetime linking composition and composure, ponder the virtue of precision, the sins of pride and "mental sloth", the temptation of prejudice and the need for conviction. Decidedly tentative, Eliot's poems solve the problem of morally significant literature. In a century of suspicion, they ask the crucial question of where one should start to rely.

Book excerpt: Has British literature finally surpassed Postmodernism and are we thus currently witnessing the emergence of a new era? Choosing specific forms of engagement with difference as a starting point, the present study traces recent developments in the field of the novel and illustrates in how far these new ways of dealing with difference may be characterised as "non-postmodern". Moreover, the analysis aims to demonstrate the renewed importance of modern(ist) strategies and their employment in contemporary British fiction. Case studies of six novels complement and illuminate these findings.

Book excerpt: " James Joyce's Other Image is the author's multi-faceted response to four years of almost exclusive concentration on James Joyce's Own Image, a study on the terms `image' and `imagination' in A Portrait and Ulysses. Having convinced himself that Joyce is a canonical writer even from the removed German perspective, he goes on to explore different aspects of Joyce studies before he addresses Ulysses in terms of Shakespeare and Sterne as well as Musil, Joyce, and Bachmann in terms of their ""fictional memoirs of the Hapsburg Empire"". Since the focus is on textual presence rather than on personal (and possibly absent) influence, a pedagogical case study of how Sterne's and Shakespeare's works may be read through Ulysses and an essay on Joyce's ""Omnipresence in Contemporary Literature"" seem in order. Finally, a fictional trialogue between George Moore, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett maps out a move beyond the realm of criticism. Jörg Rademacher teaches English for Specific Purposes at the University of Münster, Germany. He also works as a free-lance translator and literary critic. His publications include James Joyce's Own Image (1993), Was nun, Herr Bloom!, a collection of essays by diverse hands to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the publication of Ulysses, which he edits, as well as translations of books by Daniel Defoe, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Hein Grosskopf, and James Joyce's Ireland by David Pierce. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Book excerpt: Wrongly imprisoned, Frederick Whithers is desperate to commit the crime he's already being punished for: defrauding the bank out of a vast inheritance. He fakes his death to escape, but when he's seen climbing out of a coffin everyone assumes he's a vampire; when he shows none of the traditional vampire weaknesses, they decide he must be the Great One, the most powerful vampire in the history of the world.Half horror and half farce, Frederick's tale is an ever-growing avalanche of bankers, constables, graverobbers, poets, ghouls, morticians, vampires, vampire hunters, not to mention some very unfortunate rabbits. With a string of allies even more unlikely than his enemies, can Frederick stay alive long enough to claim his (well, somebody's) money? And if he can't, which of his innumerable enemies will get to him first?
