Die Arbeit würdigt Muhammad in seiner regulativen Funktion und präsentiert ihn als geerdete Prophetengestalt für den Islamischen Religionsunterricht, der v.a. in seiner Menschlichkeit in den Vordergrund gestellt wird. Damit ist dies eine erste an den methodischen Standards moderner westlicher Religionspädagogik orientierte, islamisch-theologisch ausgerichtete Arbeit.

Laut einer Überlieferung habe Gott ca. 124.000 Propheten beauftragt, um den Menschen seine Botschaft zu verkünden. Von Prophet Adam bis Muhammed haben alle dieselbe Nachricht übermittelt: Nur einzig und allein Gott anzubeten und ihm keine andere Gottheiten hinzuzugesellen. Jedoch hatten Propheten nicht nur die Funktion eines Boten inne, sondern waren auch beauftragt, selbst die religiösen Gebote zu praktizieren und ihr Volk zu erziehen und auszubilden. In ihrer Erziehungs- und Bildungsarbeit wandten sie verschiedene Methoden an, "die ihnen zu dieser Zeit geeignet schienen." In diesem Sinne heißt es im Koran: "Gott hat den Gläubigen eine Wohltat erwiesen, als Er unter ihnen einen Gesandten aus ihrer Mitte hat erstehen lassen, der ihnen seine Zeichen verliest, sie läutert und sie das Buch und die Weisheit lehrt. Sie befanden sich ja vorher in einem offenkundigen Irrtum." In diesem Zusammenhang wird dem Propheten Muhammed eine besondere Bedeutung zugesprochen. Er gilt für Muslime als das "schönste Vorbild" in allen Lebensbereichen, auch im Bereich der Bildung und Erziehung. Denn ihm gelang es, eine Gesellschaft, "in der in vielerlei Hinsicht Chaos herrschte, wie z.B. in Fragen der Moral und Tugend," zu einer zivilisierten und humanitären Gemeinschaft umzuerziehen. Er vermittelte seinem Volk die göttliche Botschaft, lebte ihnen diese vor und bemühte sich, die alten Vorstellungen seiner Mitmenschen, die geprägt von Ungerechtigkeit sowie Unmoral waren und den islamischen Werten widersprachen, zu beseitigen. Sein Ziel sei es gewesen, die Menschen zu moralischer Tugend zu erziehen. In diesem Sinne soll er gesagt haben, dass er als Lehrer gesandt worden sei

The present study aims to analyze criteria of authenticity for the reconstruction of the 'Life of Muhammad.' Contrasting the quest for the historical Muhammad with the utmost comparable quest for the historical Jesus, this study offers a critique of tendentious research on early Islam. At the same time, the hermeneutical implications of contextualizing Muhammad and the early Muslim community in Late Antiquity are discussed. The result of this study is a methodological overview of the most promising criteria of authenticity in the quest for the historical Muhammad and its significance for an emerging Islamic theology. Book excerpt: The oldest Islamic biography of Muhammad, written in the mid-eighth century, relates that the prophet died at Medina in 632, while earlier and more numerous Jewish, Christian, Samaritan, and even Islamic sources indicate that Muhammad survived to lead the conquest of Palestine, beginning in 634-35. Although this discrepancy has been known for several decades, Stephen J. Shoemaker here writes the first systematic study of the various traditions. Using methods and perspectives borrowed from biblical studies, Shoemaker concludes that these reports of Muhammad's leadership during the Palestinian invasion likely preserve an early Islamic tradition that was later revised to meet the needs of a changing Islamic self-identity. Muhammad and his followers appear to have expected the world to end in the immediate future, perhaps even in their own lifetimes, Shoemaker contends. When the eschatological Hour failed to arrive on schedule and continued to be deferred to an ever more distant point, the meaning of Muhammad's message and the faith that he established needed to be fundamentally rethought by his early followers. The larger purpose of The Death of a Prophet exceeds the mere possibility of adjusting the date of Muhammad's death by a few years; far more important to Shoemaker are questions about the manner in which Islamic origins should be studied. The difference in the early sources affords an important opening through which to explore the nature of primitive Islam more broadly. Arguing for greater methodological unity between the study of Christian and Islamic origins, Shoemaker emphasizes the potential value of non-Islamic sources for reconstructing the history of formative Islam.
