Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the effects of introducing the electronic trading system (EBS) on the foreign exchange market, the biggest financial market in the world where trading occurs through many dealers. We find that increasing transparency leads to an increase in informational efficiency, an important aspect of market quality. However, informed dealers are found to quote less aggressively in the more transparent market. Overall, we conclude that semi-transparency raises market efficiency in general, but that it is the uninformed dealers who benefit more from this increased efficiency.

I expect it to become the anchor reference for people working in the foreign exchange field.” —Richard K. Lyons, Dean and Professor of Finance, Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley “It is quite easily the most wide ranging treaty of expertise on the forex market I have ever come across. I will be keeping a copy close to my fingertips.” —Jim O’Neill, Chairman, Goldman Sachs Asset Management How should we evaluate the forecasting power of models? What are appropriate loss functions for major market participants? Is the exchange rate the only means of adjustment? Handbook of Exchange Rates answers these questions and many more, equipping readers with the relevant concepts and policies for working in today’s international economic climate. Featuring contributions written by leading specialists from the global financial arena, this handbook provides a collection of original ideas on foreign exchange (FX) rates in four succinct sections: • Overview introduces the history of the FX market and exchange rate regimes, discussing key instruments in the trading environment as well as macro and micro approaches to FX determination. • Exchange Rate Models and Methods focuses on forecasting exchange rates, featuring methodological contributions on the statistical methods for evaluating forecast performance, parity relationships, fair value models, and flow–based models. • FX Markets and Products outlines active currency management, currency hedging, hedge accounting; high frequency and algorithmic trading in FX; and FX strategy-based products. • FX Markets and Policy explores the current policies in place in global markets and presents a framework for analyzing financial crises. Throughout the book, topics are explored in-depth alongside their founding principles. Each chapter uses real-world examples from the financial industry and concludes with a summary that outlines key points and concepts. Handbook of Exchange Rates is an essential reference for fund managers and investors as well as practitioners and researchers working in finance, banking, business, and econometrics. The book also serves as a valuable supplement for courses on economics, business, and international finance at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels.

Book excerpt: E-Currency Exchange phenomenon is absolutely one of the best new business opportunities many of us have seen in years. E-currencies keep growing by the day and more and more online businesses are accepting e-currency for their products and services. It's never been a better time to get into this business, so the earlier you start, the faster you can grow your portfolio. E-currency Exchange is simply the exchange of currency from one form of e-currency to another form of e-currency. For example, exchanging dollars for E-Gold or exchanging E-Gold for E-Bullion. All over the world, there are currency markets (like Wall Street for example) where people (i.e., banks, investment firms, individuals) exchange offline currencies. These are places where people wanting to exchange currencies know they will meet other buyers and sellers i.e. like traditional Market-Makers and where they will be able to do business safely. As with offline currencies, there is a demand for e-currency exchange. DXInOne is a market where this exchange can take place. Learn the foundation of the DXInOne opportunity and where the money you can make comes from. This book is written exclusively for those who are hoping to make a full-time job (or wishing to make a full-time living) as a DXInOne Merchant. DXInOne is the real deal. They have been building their system over the past five years. DXInOne has been continually improving their business ventures for the past 5 years and in May 2005 they released the latest and biggest DXInOne system. No "System," No Selling, No Marketing, Not a Network Market or MLM Business. No Secrets, No Hidden Fees. Just a Proven Investment and E-Currency Market Making Program that can and will make you an Independent Investor. You just need a computer, internet access, and a little time each day to manage your investment account.

SCHWARTZ The primary objective of this book is to consider how the inclusion of electronic call auction trading would affect the performance of our U.S. equity markets. The papers it contains focus on the call auction and its role in a hybrid market struc ture. The purpose is to increase understanding of this trading environment, and to consider the design of a more efficient stock market. This book had its origin in a symposium, Electronic Call Market Trading, that was held at New York University's Salomon Center on April 20, 1995. Nearly 150 people from 16 different countries attended. At the time, three proprietary trading systems based on call auction principles (The Arizona Stock Exchange, Posit, and Instinet's Crossing Network) had been operating for several years and interest already existed in the procedure. Since the symposium, increasing use has been made of call auctions, primarily by the ParisBourse in its Nouveau Marchi: and CAC markets, by Deutsche Borse in its Xetra market, and in the U.S. by OptiMark. Rather than being used as stand alone systems, however, call auctions are now being interfaced with continuous markets so as to produce hybrid market structures, a development that is given considerable attention to in a number of the chapters in this book.

Book excerpt: The true meaning of investment discipline is to trade only when you rationally expect that you will achieve your desired objective. Accordingly, managers must thoroughly understand why they trade. Because trading is a zero-sum game, good investment discipline also requires that managers understand why their counterparties trade. This book surveys the many reasons why people trade and identifies the implications of the zero-sum game for investment discipline. It also identifies the origins of liquidity and thus of transaction costs, as well as when active investment strategies are profitable. The book then explains how managers must measure and control transaction costs to perform well. Electronic trading systems and electronic trading strategies now dominate trading in exchange markets throughout the world. The book identifies why speed is of such great importance to electronic traders, how they obtain it, and the trading strategies they use to exploit it. Finally, the book analyzes many issues associated with electronic trading that currently concern practitioners and regulators.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the impact of electronic trading systems on the bid-ask spreads in the foreign exchange market. The paper finds: First, both the Reuters system and EBS reduce spreads significantly; Second, the EBS is more influential than the Reuters system for the currency pair DEM/USD; Third, big dealers tend to quote relatively wider spreads to compensate for their loss of information advantage in the more transparent new systems; Fourth, dealers are more sensitive to volatility in the new systems; Fifth, geographical difference in market liquidity is reduced through the new systems, and finally, the effects occur immediately and persist in the long term. Thus, both proposed positive and negative impacts of the electronic systems are found to be true in this paper, but our findings also suggest that positive effects dominate and the electronic systems overall increase FX market liquidity.
