Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Dictionary of Plant Genetics and Molecular Biology, more than 3,500 technical terms from the fields of plant genetics and molecular biology are defined for students, teachers, and researchers in universities, institutes, and agricultural research stations. An excellent educational tool that will save you time and effort, this dictionary brings together into a single source the meaning and origin of terms from the fields of classical genetics, molecular genetics, mutagenesis, population genetics, statistics, plant biotechnology, evolutionary genetics, plant breeding, and plant biotechnology.Finding and understanding the precise meaning of many terms in genetics is crucial to understanding the foundation of the subject matter. For reasons of space, the glossaries provided at the end of most textbooks are highly inadequate. There is, then, dire need for a dictionary of terms in a single volume. You?ll appreciate the helpful approaches and features of Dictionary of Plant Genetics and Molecular Biology, including: no terms that are of limited use, very general, or self-explanatory cross references for effective access to the materials and economy of space alternate names of terms, denoted with “Also referred to as . . .” or “Also known as . . .” multiple definitions for terms defined by different authors or for terms with different meanings in different contexts authors who coined, described, or contributed toward further understanding of a term are listed and respective publications are included in the BibliographyAt last, there is compiled in a single volume the technical terms you need to know in order to understand plant genetics and molecular biology. As your knowledge grows, you?ll uncover even more terms that you need to understand. You?ll find yourself turning to this handy guide time and time again for help on all levels.

Book excerpt: "A Dictionary of Biology" is an up-to-date reference work explains several thousand specialized words that allow for empirical approaches to the biological sciences. It includes more than bare definitions, including information about most of the things named so as to convey their significance in biological discussion. M. Abercrombie, C. J. Hickman, and M. L. Johnson in effect interpret this language as it is actually used, emphasizing customary usage rather than etymology. This comprehensive lexicon includes two thousand entries. Many unfamiliar terms, especially the rarer ones, are defined with the help of other technical terms, perhaps equally unfamiliar. This trick of dictionary-makers could only be avoided by giving a complete account of a large part of biology under each heading. Every biological technical term used in a definition is itself defined elsewhere in the dictionary; though some semi-technical terms, words that can be found in any English dictionary are omitted. The authors use codes throughout the dictionary to help the reader to interpret the use of a word such as whether it is used in relation to plants and animals only, whether the word is an adjective, and when a term is defined elsewhere and adds information to the current definition. The result is an invaluable guide for the layman, the student, and the scholar alike. It presents clear and authoritative explanations of the terms and will remain useful as a quick and concise source of reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a rapid expansion of activity in the area of biomaterials and related medical devices, both in scientific terms and in clinical and commercial applications. The definition of terms has failed to keep pace with the rapidity of these developments and there is considerable confusion over the terminology used in this highly multi- and inter-disciplinary area. This confusion has arisen partly from the use of inappropriate terms which already have well-defined meanings in their parent disciplines, but which are used inexpertly by those working in other disciplines, and partly from the haphazard generation of new terms for the purpose of defining new phenomena or devices. For example, many terms used in pathology with distinct, if not readily understood, meanings are used by materials scientists to describe biocompatibility phenomena with slightly changed or even wholly misrepresented meanings; similarly, terms from materials science and engineering are seriously misused by biologists and clinicians working in this field. The leading proponent of harmonization and clarity in medical device terminology, Professor D. F. Williams has been influential in setting the standard for the accurate definition of some of the terms used. In particular, the definition of biocompatibility, ‘the Williams definition’, agreed at a 1987 conference has been adopted worldwide. Now, in association with O’Donnell and Associates of Brussels, he has prepared The Williams Dictionary to provide a definitive exposition of the meaning of the terminology used in the area of biomaterials and medical devices. It includes definitions and explanations of more than 2,000 terms from many areas, including biomaterials and medical devices, materials science, biological sciences, and clinical medicine and surgery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern genetics began in 1900 with the rediscovery of Mendel's paper, and now the sequencing of the human genome has brought the first century of progress in this field to a triumphant conclusion. Genetics has entered a new era with the advent of genomic and proteomic approaches, and the knowledge in no other biological discipline is advancing as rapidly as that in molecular genetics and cell biology. Proliferation of new terms inevitably accompanies such exponential growth. The sixth edition of A Dictionary of Genetics addresses the need of students and professionals to have access to an up-to-date reference source that defines not only the most recently coined terms, but in many cases also presents important ancillary encyclopedic information.A Dictionary of Genetics has a broader coverage than its name implies, since it includes definitions of strictly genetic words along with a variety of non-genetic terms often encountered in the literature of genetics. There are about 7,000 definitions, and tables or drawings that illustrate 395 of these. In addition to the main body of the dictionary, this work features new Appendices covering the genomic sizes and gene numbers of about 30 organisms ranging from the smallest known virus to humans, an up-to-date listing of internet addresses for easy access to genetic databanks, and a list of developments, inventions and advances in genetics, cytology, and evolutionary science from the past 400 years. These 900 entries, covering a period from 1590 to 2001, are also cross-referenced in the definitions that occur in the body of the dictionary. No other genetics dictionary supplies definitions cross-referenced to chronology entries or has species entries cross-referenced to an appendix showing the position of each organism in a taxonomic hierarchy. These features make A Dictionary of Genetics the most important lexicon in this field.

It includes more than 10,000 A-Z entries on all areas of biomedicine, focusing on areas that have developed since the first edition, such as genomics and biomedical science. Entries are authoritative and wide-ranging, covering terms from the related areas of anatomy, genetics, molecular bioscience, pathology, pharmacology, and clinical medicine. Supplementary material includes appendices on the Greek Alphabet, SI Units and single letter codes for Amino Acids. Fully cross-referenced, the dictionary also features useful navigational entries for types of diseases and disorders—for example renal disorders—that list all related entries in the dictionary so the reader can find them quickly. Aimed primarily at molecular bioscientists, clinicians, and students of biomedical courses, the dictionary is also a useful resource for patients and journalists wishing to research a particular disease.
