Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greeks invented them. All manner of people in the European Middle Ages used them, often with creative and brilliant effect. Victorian schoolmasters in England almost buried them and the pupils who had to cram facts parrot-fashion. Originally published in 1972, this title brought mnemonics back into focus with a new collection designed for current use. A mnemonic is anything that gets your memory working. When in the month does the third quarter-day fall? What order have the planets from the sun? Are you sure about the kings and queens of England? People nowadays have so much to remember that even those quite happy with √2 = 1.414 may prefer to chant ‘I wish I know the root of two’ and remind themselves in that way. Although some entries are very much of their time, this title reminds us that mnemonics are still a useful tool in a world where technology means most people feel they have little need to remember.

Book excerpt: Upgrade your English Vocabulary Today! If you swallowed a dictionary and somehow transferred all its contents into your brain, you would be unstoppable. This book makes that happen in a much less extreme way! Most books that help you prepare for the SAT or the GRE are either compendia or word lists and flashcards, or have multiple choice questions on the lines of those featured in these tests.Very few books concentrate on fun exercises to build up the skills required to become better, organically, at verbal and vocabulary skills in English. This book fills the gap.Within this book, you will find multiple fun games and exercises that help you recognize patterns and guess some of the harder words on the tests, and link them to their definitions. Here are a few key features of the approach used:1. Gamification: In each part of each exercise, you are given a set of clues about a word, one of which is always linked to its definition. This gamification approach is key to making you come back, Exercise Set after Exercise Set, to master hundreds of useful new words by the end of the entire book.2. Pattern recognition: The clues are carefully chosen so that they link to key properties of a word that help you remember it quickly in a test scenario. For example, the first letter of a word, its length, and its approximate meaning are all patterns that help us create mental shortcuts to quick + intuitive guesses. These are exactly what the word clues are based on, and they will benefit you in skill building, through an indirect approach - just like working out a group of muscles in the gym gives you muscle gains weeks later!3. Graded difficulty increase: The pool of words used for this book is carefully curated - you will start off with challenging but commonly used words for the most part, and graduate to more obscure words in a slowly staged manner. All the while, we will sprinkle in a few words related to those you have mastered in earlier Exercise Sets, so that you are able to build on what you have learnt earlier. By the end of the book, you will be ready for anything that a real standardized test can throw at you - both in terms of skills and confidence.4. Unique proprietary format: The format of questions used in this book cannot be found anywhere else - it has been tried and tested with thousands of students, and works every single time.Whether you are looking to strengthen your verbal skills in English for a test, or just looking to do this out of interest, this book is for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2015 version published on 12/29/14. Need a good way to remember that the word "prodigal" means "wasteful"? Just think ofprada gal - a girl who spends all of her money on designer clothes. Brian McElroy (Harvard, '02) and Vince Kotchian (Boston College, '97), two of San Diego's most sought after test-prep tutors, provide a series of clever, unconventional, and funny memory devices aimed toward helping you to improve your vocabulary and remember words long-term so that you don't ever forget their meanings. Brian and Vince, combined, have been tutoring the test for over 20 years. They have analyzed all available official GRE tests to select the words that appear in this book. The vocabulary words in this book are best suited for students at a 9th-grade level or above. The words in this edition are specifically targeted toward the GRE exam, but they are also helpful for students who are preparing for other standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, GMAT, LSAT or MCAT, or anyone at any age who simply wants to improve his/her knowledge of English vocabulary. Disclaimer: a few of our mnemonics might not be appropriate for kids – some contain adult language or situations. Over 950 of the words in this book appear in our other mnemonics book,SAT Vocab Capacity. So if you're easily offended, the SAT version might be a better choice. Why This Book Is Different If you're studying for the GRE, SAT, or for any other standardized test that measures your vocabulary, you may be feeling a little bit anxious – especially if you've taken a practice test and encountered words you didn't know (or maybe never even saw before)! Whether you have seven days or seven months to prepare for the test, you're going to want to boost your vocabulary. But it's not that simple – you've got to remember the words you learn. And on many GRE text completion and sentence equivalence questions, getting the right answer comes down to knowing the precise definition of the words. You could make vocabulary flashcards. You could look up words you don't know. You could read a book with lots of big words. But unless you give your brain a way to hold on to the words you learn, it will probably have a harder time remembering them when they appear on the test. That's the problem with most vocabulary books: the definitions and sentences in the books aren't especially memorable. That's where this book is different. We've not only clearly defined the words but we've also created sentences designed to help you remember the words through a variety of associations - using mnemonics. Mnemonic Examples A mnemonic is just a memory device. It works by creating a link in your brain to something else, so that recall of one thing helps recall of the other. This can be done in many ways – but the strongest links are through senses, emotions, rhymes, and patterns. Consider this example: Quash (verb): to completely stop from happening. Think: squash. The best way to quash an invasion of ants in your kitchen is simple: squash them. Now your brain has a link from the word quash (which it may not have known) to the word squash (which it probably knows). Both words sound and look the same, so it's easy to create a visual and aural link. If you picture someone squashing ants (and maybe get grossed out), you also have another visual link and an emotional link. Here's another example: Eschew (verb): to avoid. Think: ah-choo! Eschew people who say "ah-choo!" unless you want to catch their colds. The word eschew sounds similar to a sneeze (ah-choo!), so your brain will now link the two sounds. If you picture yourself avoiding someone who is about to sneeze in your face, even better! Again, the more connections you make in your brain to the new word, th

Book excerpt: Learning Spanish Words through Etymology and Mnemonics makes use of etymology to help you remember Spanish words and, failing that, suggests a mnemonic. Combination of these two approaches in one book separates it from other books on the market. The amount and depth of etymology is carefully chosen to be practical and not overwhelm an average reader. The suggested mnemonics aim to help an educated English-speaking person. An adult or young adult who likes learning vocabulary with some word analysis instead of rote memory will find this book to be helpful and a joy to read. With about 3000 words selected from 15000 in the Real Academia Espaola corpus sorted in frequency order, this booklet can be used either as a dictionary or for leisure reading. The hint provided for each word is particularly helpful for short-term memory needed in taking an exam, while the etymological and cultural information will serve you for years to come. For more information and book errata, please visit http://yong321.freeshell.org/lsw/ "Yong Huang offers in the introduction a clear and detailed explanation of the methodology employed throughout the work, which presents a practical balance between scholarly research and light reading... Yong's work is an important addition to the field of language study, and will be a welcome supplement to anyone's vocabulary-building tools." Edward A. Roberts, Professor Emeritus of Central Michigan University, author of A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Spanish Language "(Yong Huang's book) filled a niche on my language-learning bookshelf I hadn't even thought of before... the system works as an efficient road map to boosting vocabulary by steering readers directly to the most effective words for building understanding and fluency fast, while pointing out shortcuts and possible pitfalls along the way. It's especially useful for well-read adults and polyglots." Miranda Metheny, Spanish Teacher at District of Columbia Public Schools, polyglot, volunteer admin of Facebook Polyglots group
