Book excerpt: "[...]AND HORSES, ISLEWORTH—THE THREE CRIPPLES—THE GEORGE INN—THE EIGHT BELLS, HATFIELD There are not many inns that can be identified in Oliver Twist, and those that can play very little part in the enactment of the story, or have any notable history to relate in regard to them. The first one to attract attention is that at Barnet, where the Artful Dodger took Oliver Twist for breakfast on the morning they encountered each other on the latter's tramp to London. Although Dickens does not name this inn, we believe he had in mind the Red Lion, for it was one of those inns that was an objective when he and his friends went for a horse-ride out into the country. One such occasion was chosen[...]".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dickensian Inns and Taverns The very friendly reception given to my previous book on the Inns and Taverns of Pickwick has encouraged me to pursue the subject through the other novels and writings of Dickens, and to compile the present volume. I do not claim that it is encyclopaedic in the sense that it will be found to supply a complete index to every inn mentioned in the novelist's books. Many a reader will recall, I expect, a certain inn in his favourite story which has been overlooked but, while my chief aim has been to deal with the famous and prominent ones, I have not ignored the minor ones which, in many cases, are also the most alluring, and often play an important part in the story. The plan has been to take the long novels in something approximating to chronological order, followed by the Shorter stories and sketches and, where an inn is mentioned in more than one book, to deal with it fully in the chapter devoted to the story in which it was first alluded to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This curious literary artifact is a travelogue of sorts, a guidebook to the real inns and taverns mentioned in Charles Dickens' first novel, The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, or, more familiarly, The Pickwick Papers. The 1836-7 comic serial was a phenomenon in its day, and was, in the mind of Dickens scholar BERTRAM WALDROM MATZ (1865-1925), "England's classic book of humor." Here, with a singular dedication and a hearty charm, Matz-one of the founders of the Dickens Fellowship and the first editor of its journal, The Dickensian, which first appeared in 1905 and is still published today-takes us on a tour of such locations as the Blue Lion in Muggleton, the Marquis of Granby in Dorking, the Magpie and Stump in Whitechapel, the Saracen's Head in Towcester, and other places that will be familiar to Pickwick fans. This replica of the 1922 second edition is a delightful document of literary fandom.

Written in an interesting manner, it thoroughly examines Dickens true-to-life portrayal of the locations mentioned therein. Matz delves into the history of these settings and examines their current condition as well. Meticulous!
