Book Synopsis Counsel for Christian Workers by : Charles Spurgeon
Download or read book Counsel for Christian Workers written by Charles Spurgeon and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Counsel for Christian Workers" is a heart-warming call for Christians to take their main duty seriously - that is the call to enlarge God's Kingdom on earth, and to do this with energy, enthusiasm, earnestness, zeal, and knowledge. As with other books by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers, this one is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who are devoted totally to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To those who are saying something like "How I would like to be one of these!", Spurgeon replies with a clear "Well, you don't need a large congregation, because there is a pulpit in every street in London." But Spurgeon's starting point is his readers' own salvation. He quotes, "Knowing the terrors of the Lord we persuade men", then adding "what loss would it be to you, if you did lose all the world, and gained your soul?" and then "it is the best and most convenient that each householder should sweep before his own door". This book has been originally published in 1896. This edition has been edited for modern readers, typeset for eBook readers, and proofread. About the author: Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was born in Kelvedon, Essex, England. He converted to Christianity in 1850 at a small Methodist chapel, and shortly after that he began his own ministry of preaching and teaching, and preached more than 500 sermons by the age of 20. During his ministry, he preached to more than 10 million people, wrote tens of books, and published his sermons in over 25,000 copies on a weekly basis. Charles Spurgeon suffered from poor health and he died on January 31, 1892, and was buried in London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This posthumous work by Jacques Arends offers new insights into the emergence of the creole languages of Suriname including Sranantongo or Suriname Plantation Creole, Ndyuka, and Saramaccan, and the sociohistorical context in which they developed. Drawing on a wealth of sources including little known historical texts, the author points out the relevance of European settlements prior to colonization by the English in 1651 and concludes that the formation of the Surinamese creoles goes back further than generally assumed. He provides an all-encompassing sociolinguistic overview of the colony up to the mid-19th century and shows how ethnicity, language attitude, religion and location had an effect on which languages were spoken by whom. The author discusses creole data gleaned from the earliest sources and interprets the attested variation. The book is completed by annotated textual data, both oral and written and representing different genres and stages of the Surinamese creoles. It will be of interest to linguists, historians, anthropologists, literary scholars and anyone interested in Suriname.

Book Synopsis Reading Clocks, Alla Turca by : Avner Wishnitzer
Download or read book Reading Clocks, Alla Turca written by Avner Wishnitzer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up until the end of the eighteenth century, the way Ottomans used their clocks conformed to the inner logic of their own temporal culture. However, this began to change rather dramatically during the nineteenth century, as the Ottoman Empire was increasingly assimilated into the European-dominated global economy and the project of modern state building began to gather momentum. In Reading Clocks, Alla Turca, Avner Wishnitzer unravels the complexity of Ottoman temporal culture and for the first time tells the story of its transformation. He explains that in their attempt to attain better surveillance capabilities and higher levels of regularity and efficiency, various organs of the reforming Ottoman state developed elaborate temporal constructs in which clocks played an increasingly important role. As the reform movement spread beyond the government apparatus, emerging groups of officers, bureaucrats, and urban professionals incorporated novel time-related ideas, values, and behaviors into their self-consciously “modern” outlook and lifestyle. Acculturated in the highly regimented environment of schools and barracks, they came to identify efficiency and temporal regularity with progress and the former temporal patterns with the old political order. Drawing on a wealth of archival and literary sources, Wishnitzer’s original and highly important work presents the shifting culture of time as an arena in which Ottoman social groups competed for legitimacy and a medium through which the very concept of modernity was defined. Reading Clocks, Alla Turca breaks new ground in the study of the Middle East and presents us with a new understanding of the relationship between time and modernity.
