Book excerpt: "Second Book of Verse" by Eugene Field is a delightful and enchanting collection of poetry that invites readers into the whimsical world of this beloved American writer. Published during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Field's second book of verse likely continues the tradition of his charming and nostalgic style. Within the pages of this collection, readers can anticipate encountering a variety of themes, each infused with Field's signature blend of playfulness and sentimentality. The poet's love for capturing the innocence of childhood is likely evident, with verses that celebrate the magic of imagination and the wonder found in everyday moments. Field may revisit his well-known characters like "Little Boy Blue" and "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," continuing to weave their stories into the fabric of his poetry. Through these characters, he might explore themes of love, loss, and the enduring spirit of youth. The poet's ability to create vivid and memorable imagery, coupled with a rhythmic and melodic quality, is likely to shine throughout the collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Works of Eugene Field is a collection of poetry and essays by American author Eugene Field, originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1896 under the title The Writings in Prose and Verse of Eugene Field. Known for his children's poetry, especially the light-hearted "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," Field was a journalist who found his niche in poetry and humor writing. The original collection, published after Field's death and including artwork and letters from the author, is a charming set of books compiling all his works. Republished here for young readers and collectors of Americana, The Works of Eugene Field is sure to delight audiences young and old. Volume III of this twelve-volume set, Second Book of Verse, is a collection of poetry, the second in the series. It also includes an Introduction from American journalist Julian Hawthorne, son of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. EUGENE FIELD (1850-1895) was an American author known for his humorous essays and children's poetry. Interested in many subjects and unable to decide what to do with his life, Field attended three colleges-Williams College, Knox College, and University of Missouri-tried his hand at acting, law, and journalism, and traveled Europe before meeting his wife and becoming city editor for the St. Joseph Gazette in St. Joseph, Missouri. He wrote and edited for several newspapers, establishing himself as a humor writer and publishing poetry. He died of a heart-attack at 45.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features a biographical account of the American writer Eugene Field (1850-1895), best known for his children's poetry and humorous essays. There were two Fields – the author and the man – and it is the purpose of this study to reproduce the latter as he appeared to those who knew and loved him for what he was personally for the benefit of those who have only known him through the medium of his writings. In doing this it was far from the author's intention and farther from his friendship to disturb any of the preconceptions that have been formed from the perusal of Field's works as these are the creations of something entirely apart from the man whose genius produced them._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ Pedigree_x000D_ His Father's First Love-affair_x000D_ The Dred Scott Case_x000D_ Birth and Early Youth_x000D_ Education_x000D_ Choice of a Profession_x000D_ Marriage and Early Domestic Life_x000D_ Early Experiences in Journalism_x000D_ In Denver, 1881-1883_x000D_ Anecdotes of Life in Denver_x000D_ Coming to Chicago_x000D_ Personal Characteristics_x000D_ Relations with Stage Folk_x000D_ Beginning of His Literary Education_x000D_ Method of Work_x000D_ Nature of His Daily Work_x000D_ Pedigree_x000D_ Introduction to Colored Inks_x000D_ Some Letters_x000D_ More Letters_x000D_ Publication of His First Books_x000D_ His Second Visit to Europe_x000D_ In the Saints' and Sinners' Corner_x000D_ Political Relations_x000D_ His "Auto-analysis"_x000D_ Last Years_x000D_ Last Days
