Download or read book Raglan written by John Sweetman and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too many historians have dismissed FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, first Baron Raglan, as at best, an indifferent and, at worst, an incompetent on the basis of his association with the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade. Yet as this long overdue biography of a pivotal military figure of the 19th Century reveals Raglans achievements over fifty years should not be judged on so narrow a basis. True, as Commander of the Expeditionary Force to the Crimea, he must take his share of responsibility for the hardship suffered by the men under him particularly during the winter of 1854-55 but the fact remains that Raglan never lost a battle for which he was fully responsible. Commissioned in 1804 he served under Sir Arthur Paget and the Duke of Wellington, throughout the Peninsular War losing an arm at Waterloo. He held key posts, including Military Secretary for an astonishing 25 years and Master General of the Ordnance and his influence was far reaching. Raglan is revealed in this objective study as a brave, thoughtful, caring and capable man, who found himself an easy target for critics of an outdated and inadequate military administrative system. Very personal attacks, some from official quarters, mortally wounded him and he died in June 1855, a mere seven months after being appointed a field marshal amid public acclaim. In this first full biography of Raglan, John Sweetman examines not just the man himself but the workings of an Army that was straggling to keep up with social and technological change. Readers will find this a fine exposé of a man who was placed in a no-win situation through little fault of his own. John Sweetman graduated from Brasenose College Oxford (Modern History) before taking a PhD at Kings College, London. He later became Head of Defence and International Affairs at RMA Sandhurst. He is the author of numerous military works. Now retired he lives at Camberley.
Book Synopsis The Diary of a Soldier by : Major L. Louis Lee
Download or read book The Diary of a Soldier written by Major L. Louis Lee and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diary of a Soldier recounts the World War I experiences of U.S. Army Sergeant Major L. Louis Lee from the day of his embarkation to France in April 1918 to the day his troop ship docked in New York the following February. Alternately inspiring, introspective, droll, and chilling, the Diary was written in a time and place far from the 21st century. Patriotism was more innocent. Communication with supporters at home could take weeks or months. Daily life was elemental. Yet common themes in the Diary bind the World War I years to today: the horror of war, the way soldiers cope with severe physical and mental stress, and the anchor provided by home, family and friends. The Diary of a Soldier offers a unique portrayal of one mans daily experiences in his eras war to end all wars.

The barracks at Scutari are said to be filled with troops already, and there is some chance of our being encamped. The town of Gallipoli, although stated in guide books to be a place of some importance and to contain 18,000 people, looks uninteresting enough from the straits; an D 34 GALLIPOLI. impression which a further acquaintance on shore does not remove. It is filthy in the extreme; the houses, with the exception of a few more respectable consular residences, mere sheds, arranged (as is customary) in streets or bazaars, pertaining to the different classes or trades. Huge stones alternate, with deep ruts filled with dust, and combine to render pedestrianism decidedly unpleasant. An old shell of a castle is a prominent feature in the foreground. Of course, great bustle was evident, arising from the traffic of the troops; the French influence...

Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over two hundred and sixty maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Crimean War] Lieut.-General Sir Charles Ash Windham had served his country in the Grenadier Guards for some 23 years before retiring on half pay in 1849. The outbreak of the Crimean War led him back to active duty, being appointed assistant quartermaster-general of the 4th division; he arrived in the Peninsula with his division on the 14th September 1854. Just six days later he and his men were on the field at the Battle of Alma, although only slightly engaged, and he was also present at the battle of Balaclava. He was greatly distinguished at the battle of Inkerman, and owing to the death or disablement of superiors, was in charge of the whole of the 4th division for a time. He devoted every moment of the winter of 1854 to the care of his staving, ragged men who were suffering from the dearth of supplies during the terrible privations on the Russian steppe. Windham became a national hero for his actions in leading the gallant, but abortive, assault on the feared “Redan” fortification at Sebastopol on the 8th September 1855. Promoted immediately for his distinguished conduct to Major-General, he ended the war as the chief of staff of the army under Sir William Codrington. He served prominently during the Indian Mutiny, and despite a fierce resistance to overwhelming numbers of rebels at Cawnpore he was driven back through the town. He was unfairly castigated by the press and never received a further active command; the erroneous blackening of his name is laid to rest by the correspondence which was printed in this volume for the first time, in short he was hiding the errors of a subordinate.
