Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PETER PEARS's reputation as an outstanding and distinctive tenor is grounded in his interpretations of Benjamin Britten's works; their partnership of thirty years significantly shaped and defined musical developments not only in England but on a broader plane. Throughout their busy professional lives they travelled extensively, on concert tours and on holiday, finding fresh stimulus in change. Pear's twelve travel diaries, brought together in this volume, record much of that travel and provide valuable contextual material on the musical development of both Pears and Britten. The first diary dates from 1936, the year before his friendship with Britten began, when he went on tour to North America with the New English Singers. Other diaries record the five-month tour to the Far East and the important encounters (especially for Britten) with the gamelan music of Bali and the Japanese Noh theatre; visits to Russia as guests of Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife Galina Vishnevskaya, where they met significant figures from Russian musical life; and attendance at the Ansbach Bach Festival when Pears was at the height of his career. Also recorded are holidays in the Caribbean and Italy, a concert tour through the north of England, and accounts of the rehearsals and performances of the New York premieres of Billy Budd and Death in Venice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘I am one of the cracked people of the world,’ Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon wrote of herself, ‘and I like to herd with the cracked ... queer Americans, democrats, socialists, artists, poor devils or angels; and am never happy in an English genteel family life. I try to do it like other people, but I long always to be off on some wild adventure.’ Reformer, feminist, free-thinker, later to endow the founding of Girton College, Barbara Bodichon went to the United States on a marriage journey. First published in 1972, her journal of that trip, published in its original form for the first time, contains timely observation and incisive criticism of the American South before the Civil War, and gives a vivid portrait of a lively woman of her times, the friend of George Eliot and other leading figures of her age. This edition includes a fascinating introduction about the English visitor in the United States, from Dickens to Trollope. There is also a biographical study of Barbara Bodichon herself, giving an account of her life and of the causes, notably Women’s Rights, to which she devoted her time and energy.

This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1819, the Murray family set out on one of the last Grand Tours before railways forever changed the way people travelled. The eldest daughter of the Second Earl of Mansfield, Lady Frederica Murray (later Stanhope, as she married James Hamilton Stanhope, the youngest son of the 3rd Earl of Stanhope) kept a diary on the tour, which this book explores in detail. The diary has never been published (not even mentioned in any of the Grand Tour literature) and is a fascinating and essential look at the Murray/Mansfield family, and Europe at the time. Frederica was a deeply observant traveller and noted down numerous picturesque and historical details; she was also very open and sometimes even cutting in her opinions when she came across something or someone she did not like. Frederica’s diary shows a very mature 19-year-old with clear opinions on art, literature and the world around her. This book will therefore be interesting for scholars of travel, Grand Tours, and Regency England and its society, as well as anyone with an interest in travel and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful and inspiring biography of Merze Tate, a trailblazing Black woman scholar and intrepid world traveler Born in rural Michigan during the Jim Crow era, the bold and irrepressible Merze Tate (1905-1996) refused to limit her intellectual ambitions, despite living in what she called a "sex and race discriminating world." Against all odds, the brilliant and hardworking Tate earned degrees in international relations from Oxford University in 1935 and a doctorate in government from Harvard in 1941. She then joined the faculty of Howard University, where she taught for three decades of her long life spanning the tumultuous twentieth century. This book revives and critiques Tate's prolific and prescient body of scholarship, with topics ranging from nuclear arms limitations to race and imperialism in India, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. Tate credited her success to other women, Black and white, who helped her realize her dream of becoming a scholar. Her quest for research and adventure took her around the world twice, traveling solo with her cameras. Barbara Savage's skilled rendering of Tate's story is built on more than a decade of research. Tate's life and work challenge provincial approaches to African American and American history, women's history, the history of education, diplomatic history, and international thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel Diary: Bolivia is a travel guidebook with a slant. It uses personal travelogues from people's trips to Bolivia. By reading these travelogues, one can gain a greater perspective on the culture and customs of a country and they can also see the places that the author enjoyed (or didn't enjoy) visiting. The book is best used in conjunction with a 'regular' travel guide, which provides the basic information for travelers, like hotel and restaurant information. But Travel Diary: Bolivia will give you information on actual visits to some restaurants and hotels and can steer you towards good places to dine and sleep and it can help you avoid the bad places. Many people enjoy reading travelogues before visiting foreign countries, but it is very difficult to print and carry this information with you. Travel Diary: Bolivia allows you to have access to the information found only in those travelogues by printing the travelogues in a paperback format, which is easy to carry and convenient for the traveler.
