Book excerpt: The purpose of this Codex Diagnostic Tool is to provide a framework for countries to carry out a self-assessment of the current status of the national Codex programme. The Tool outlines the main elements, sub-elements, and best practices that need to be in place in any national Codex programme and through the process of self-assessment, countries can assess the collective capacity of the programme made up of individuals, processes and institutions. This includes assessing the capacity to effecti vely plan and participate in Codex sessions, to contribute scientific and technical input, to use Codex texts as a basis for national regulation and standards as appropriate, and to ensure Codex related activities and management of the programme are integral parts of the food safety control system. Using the results of the self-assessment countries identify areas in need of strengthening and capacity development, and can ensure the national Codex programme is fit for purpose, addresses nationa l interests and priorities and is adaptive to change and evolving needs. The results of the assessment can be used to inform ongoing national workplans and/or form the basis of a request for technical assistance if external support is required to improve national capacities. One potential source of external support is the FAO/WHO Codex Trust Fund (CTF2).

Book excerpt: At Seventy-third World Health Assembly, WHO was tasked by Member States to update the WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety under the resolution WHA73.5, ‘‘Strengthening efforts on food safety’’. To advance this work, WHO convened the first Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meeting on the update of WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety from 8 to 10 February 2021. The meeting was attended by WHO Multisectoral Actions in Food Systems (AFS) headquarters staff, WHO regional advisors for food safety, 24 TAG members, and staff from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as observers. The overall objective of the first TAG meeting was to collect experts’ advice on the consultation paper developed for discussion on this meeting and the update process of the WHO Global Strategy for Food Safety. This meeting generally agreed on the role of food safety in the global development agenda, the drivers of change for the future of food safety, the aim and the vision, and the proposed five strategic priorities. The meeting highlighted the need to foster global and regional cooperation. While recognizing the strategy should be Member State oriented, it was agreed to enhance WHO’s leadership and give more visibility to WHO’s role in supporting Member States to strengthen food safety and lower the burden of foodborne disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food safety has become a major concern for consumers in the developed world and Europe in particular. This has been highlighted by the recent spate of food scares ranging from the BSE (mad cow) crisis to Chinese melamine contamination of baby formula. To ensure food safety throughout Europe, stringent food safety standards have been put in place ‘from farm to fork’. At the same time, poor African countries in the COMESA rely on their food exports to the European market to achieve their development goals yet have difficulty meeting the EU food safety standards. This book examines the impact of EU food safety standards on food imports from COMESA countries. It also critically examines both EU and COMESA food safety standards in light of the WTO SPS Agreement and the jurisprudence of the WTO panels and Appellate Body. The book makes ground-breaking proposals on how the standards divide between the EU and the COMESA can be bridged and discusses the impact of EU food safety standards on food imports from poor African countries.

Book excerpt: In a modern world with rapidly growing international trade, countries compete less based on the availability of natural resources, geographical advantages, and lower labor costs and more on factors related to firms' ability to enter and compete in new markets. One such factor is the ability to demonstrate the quality and safety of goods and services expected by consumers and confirm compliance with international standards. To assure such compliance, a sound quality infrastructure (QI) ecosystem is essential. Jointly developed by the World Bank Group and the National Metrology Institute of Germany, this guide is designed to help development partners and governments analyze a country's quality infrastructure ecosystems and provide recommendations to design and implement reforms and enhance the capacity of their QI institutions.

This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diverse foods derived from livestock production systems, including grazing and pastoralist systems, and from the hunting of wild animals, provide high-quality proteins, important fatty acids and various vitamins and minerals – contributing to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health. Livestock species are adapted to a wide range of environments, including areas that are unsuitable for crop production. Globally, more than a billion people depend on livestock value chains for their livelihoods. Small-scale livestock farmers and pastoralists make up a large proportion of livestock producers. Well integrated livestock production increases the resilience of small-scale farming systems. Livestock also provide other important ecosystem services in landscape management, provide energy and help to improve soil fertility. Rangeland or grassland ecosystems occupy some 40 percent of the world’s terrestrial area. Livestock keepers raise grazing animals to transform grassland vegetation into food. Challenges related to high resource utilization and pollution, food–feed competition, greenhouse-gas emissions, antimicrobial resistance and animal welfare as well as zoonotic and food-borne diseases, accessibility and affordability need to be solved if agrifood systems are to become more sustainable. FAO’s Committee on Agriculture requested a comprehensive, science- and evidence-based global assessment of the contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable food systems, nutrition and healthy diets, considering environmental, economic and social sustainability. The assessment consists of four component documents. This first component document provides a holistic analysis of the contribution of terrestrial animal source food to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health outcomes over the course of people’s lives.
