Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: A Clinical Guide to Their Diagnosis and Treatment I have written this book because it seemed to me that a book was wanted which should guide the student and practitioner to the. Diagnosis and right treatment of the diseases of women. I have tried to present the different diseases which affect the organs peculiar to women in the way in which they appear in practice. I have not sought to quote everything that has been recommended, but to state principles, and in applying those principles to recom mend that which, having tried it, I know to be good. I may plead that I have one qualification for writing such a book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some clients don't respond to a therapist's chosen treatment for a specific mental disorder. Could there be a physical disorder that is causing psychiatric symptoms? How can a therapist distinguish between similar psychiatric and physical disorders to arrive at the correct diagnosis, refer on, and/or suggest appropriate treatment? Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women gives the therapist the foundation for identifying those physiological disorders that may be at the root of the mental problems presented by women clients. Hyperthyroidism, for example, can result in depression and anxiety, and temporal lobe epilepsy can manifest itself with the same symptoms as bipolar disorder. This special guidebook sorts out potential mix-ups by providing detailed cases and illustrations, a quick reference table for checking symptoms, and a glossary. Making technical information clear and concise, the authors cover endocrinological--including thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and parathyroid systems--and brain seizure problems as well as other diseases--such as multiple sclerosis, mitral heart valve prolapse, and lupus erythematosus. They offer a basic overview of the systems and organs involved and focus on how particular malfunctions can result in serious behavioral problems. A guide to providing the best and most effective care to women clients, Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women presents important information about assessment and interfacing with medical professionals. All mental health and helping professionals will find this book invaluable, as will students in clinical/counseling psychology, health psychology, social work, and gender studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gonorrhea in Women: Its Pathology, Symptomatology, Diagnosis, and Treatment; Together With a Review of the Rare Varieties of the Disease Which Occur in Men, Women and Children In this exceedingly comprehensive volume on gonorrhea Dr. Norris has placed before us, in a most interesting and instructive way, the many phases of this subject. The historic narrative, which leads back to the earliest records of the disease, is intensely entertaining, following as it does the curious and bizarre views expressed in ancient literature regarding the affection up to the description of the remarkable experiment performed by Hunter upon himself, in which he endeavored to show that the specific virus of gonorrhea and that of syphilis were interchangeable. As a result of this remarkable but fallacious experiment Hunters theory of the mutual identity of the two infections was accepted by the profession without further question. In spite of the later and well-sustained dissent by Ricord, this view continued to hold sway, and was not entirely dissipated until the discovery, by Neisser, of the specific microorganism of gonorrhea. This discovery put an end to the long-agitated discussion, and for the first time a scientific foundation was established upon which all modern work along this line has been constructed. One learns from the ancient documents, as set down by Dr. Norris, that the ravages of gonorrhea were recognized, and that strenuous efforts were made, by segregation and other restrictive means, to limit its spread. In the chapter on Bacteriology and the Pathogenesis of Gonorrhea, the author has very clearly described the best cultural and staining methods, and traced the destructive effects of the gonococcus upon the pelvic organs and other tissues of the body. This study is elaborately illustrated from gross and microscopic sections made by Dr. Norris from the extensive collection in the pathologic laboratory of the Gynecologic Department of the University of Pennsylvania. The literature has been carefully compiled, and has been so well digested as to furnish an almost encyclopedic review of all the various aspects and history of the Neisserian infection. In the chapter on Sociology the author has considered the relationship of gonorrhea to sterility and abortion, and has shown the havoc that is wrought in the destruction of the eye-sight of new-born infants as the result of maternal infection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Health is a comprehensive reference that addresses health issues affecting women of all ages — from adolescence through maturity. It goes far beyond other books on this topic, which concentrate only on reproductive health, and has a truly international perspective. It covers key issues ranging from osteoporosis to breast cancer and other cancers, domestic violence, sexually transmitted diseases, occupational hazards, eating disorders, heart disease and other chronic illnesses, substance abuse, and societal and behavioral influences on health. In this second edition of Women and Health, chapters thoughtfully explore the current state of women’s health and health care, including the influences of sex and gender on the occurrence of a wide variety of diseases and conditions. All chapters have been extensively updated and emphasize the epidemiology of the condition — the etiology, occurrence, primary and secondary prevention (screening), risk factors, surveillance, changing trends over time, and critical analysis of the diagnostic and treatment options and controversies. Treatment sections in each chapter have been expanded to create a stronger dialogue between epidemiologists and women's health practitioners. Saves researchers and clinicians time in quickly accessing the very latest details on a broad range of women’s health issues, as opposed to searching through thousands of journal articles Provides a common language for epidemiologists, public health practitioners, and women’s health specialists to discuss the behavioral, cultural, and biological determinants of women’s health Researchers and medical specialists will learn how the gender-specific risks and features of one organ system’s diseases affect the health of other organ systems For example: Hormone replacement therapy used to treat imbalance within the endocrine system is also being used to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease; Drugs developed for type 2 diabetes are now being used in chemoprevention Orients the non-gerontologist about the importance of considering the entire life cycle of women within research designs and treatment plans Professors teaching courses in women’s health will use slides and additional materials to structure lectures/courses; students will use slides as a unique resource to study for exams
