Book Synopsis Di Serambi: On the Verandah by : Iem Brown
Download or read book Di Serambi: On the Verandah written by Iem Brown and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-07-28 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Di Serambi: On the Verandah, first published in 1995, brings together the work of twelve contemporary Indonesian poets. Over forty poems are presented in both Indonesian and English, together with notes on linguistic and cultural references, and a brief biography of each contributor. The poems have been selected to offer a range of chronological, thematic, and stylistic perspectives on Indonesian poetry. Iem Brown and Joan Davis travelled to Indonesia to interview the writers, providing the reader with a social context for the poetry. In their translations, they have kept faith with the oral tradition of Indonesian poetry, maintaining the rhythm and flow of the works, rather than presenting a purely literal interpretation. As a bilingual collection, this book serves those with general interest in Asian Studies as well as language students. Di Serambi: On the Verandah will prove invaluable to students and teachers of Indonesian language and culture.

Book Synopsis Women and Sharia Law in Northern Indonesia by : Dina Afrianty
Download or read book Women and Sharia Law in Northern Indonesia written by Dina Afrianty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the life of women in the Indonesian province of Aceh, where Islamic law was introduced in 1999. It outlines how women have had to face the formalisation of conservative understandings of sharia law in regulations and new state institutions over the last decade or so, how they have responded to this, forming non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that have shaped local discourse on women’s rights, equality and status in Islam, and how these NGOs have strategised, demanded reform, and enabled Acehnese women to take active roles in influencing the processes of democratisation and Islamisation that are shaping the province. The book shows that although the formal introduction of Islamic law in Aceh has placed restrictions on women’s freedom, paradoxically it has not prevented them from engaging in public life. It argues that the democratisation of Indonesia, which allowed Islamisation to occur, continues to act as an important factor shaping Islamisation’s current trajectory; that the introduction of Islamic law has motivated women’s NGOs and other elements of civil society to become more involved in wider discussions about the future of sharia in Aceh; and that Indonesia’s recent decentralisation policy and growing local Islamism have enabled the emergence of different religious and local adat practices, which do not necessarily correspond to overall national trends.

Book Synopsis Post-Tsunami Reconstruction in Indonesia by : Marjaana Jauhola
Download or read book Post-Tsunami Reconstruction in Indonesia written by Marjaana Jauhola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical analysis of gender mainstreaming initiatives in the post-tsunami context in Indonesia. Aiming to challenge the terms of the debate in gender mainstreaming and disaster reconstruction efforts, Jauhola offers an important contribution for the discussion of what ‘feminisms and disasters’ could be. The work provides an in-depth analysis of three governmental practices of gender mainstreaming: the use of the concept pair sex/gender; the use of gender analysis and the use of project management tools and local subversion that challenges the potential normative violence of gender mainstreaming. Providing feminist intersectional reading of gender mainstreaming the book aims to illustrate that this framework does not lack political alternatives, but rather, it offers an alternative focus for feminism and for the re-conceptualisation of ‘political’, and provides tools for practitioners of aid aiming to come to grips with the complexity of gender equality policy agenda and its potential violent social consequences in global politics. Drawing on extensive field research in Aceh, this text is one of the first book length studies, and thus provides a significant addition to Indonesian literatures on intersectional analysis of gender, religion, heteronormativity, and feminist subversive practice. It is a vital resource for those interested in understanding global interconnections of localised disaster and conflict reconstruction.
