Book Synopsis Security and Defence in South-West England Before 1800 by : Robert Higham
Download or read book Security and Defence in South-West England Before 1800 written by Robert Higham and published by University of Exeter Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Roman times down to the eighteenth century, the South West of England comprised a striking example of the importance of matters of security and defence to a local society easily threatened by external enemies and by internal conflicts and tensions. In Security and Defence in South-West England Valerie A. Maxfield examines the problems of internal security from the point of view of the Roman army, as it held down newly-conquered territory. Robert Higham considers the variety of responses - notably in the form of fortifications - which medieval society offered to external as well as internal problems. Joyce Youings analyses the particular difficulties of organising the local militia in the Tudor period. Anne Duffin and Ivan Roots adopt a Cornish perspective on problems of defence in the seventeenth century. And David J. Starkey considers the interplay of trade and security in the eighteenth century, as witnessed in the contribution of the North Atlantic fishing industry to the manning of the Royal Navy. Over all, these studies provide a fascinating series of vignettes illustrating perennial and enduring problems in the history of the British Isles.

Book Synopsis The Late Victorian Folksong Revival by : E. David Gregory
Download or read book The Late Victorian Folksong Revival written by E. David Gregory and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Late Victorian Folksong Revival: The Persistence of English Melody, 1878-1903, E. David Gregory provides a reliable and comprehensive history of the birth and early development of the first English folksong revival. Continuing where Victorian Songhunters, his first book, left off, Gregory systematically explores what the Late Victorian folksong collectors discovered in the field and what they published for posterity, identifying differences between the songs noted from oral tradition and those published in print. In doing so, he determines the extent to which the collectors distorted what they found when publishing the results of their research in an era when some folksong texts were deemed unsuitable for "polite ears." The book provides a reliable overall survey of the birth of a movement, tracing the genesis and development of the first English folksong revival. It discusses the work of more than a dozen song-collectors, focusing in particular on three key figures: the pioneer folklorist in the English west country, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould; Frank Kidson, who greatly increased the known corpus of Yorkshire song; and Lucy Broadwood, who collected mainly in the counties of Sussex and Surrey, and with Kidson and others, was instrumental in founding the Folk Song Society in the late 1890s. The book includes copious examples of the song tunes and texts collected, including transcriptions of nearly 300 traditional ballads, broadside ballads, folk lyrics, occupational songs, carols, shanties, and "national songs," demonstrating the abundance and high quality of the songs recovered by these early collectors.
Book Synopsis British and Irish Paintings in Public Collections by : Christopher Wright
Download or read book British and Irish Paintings in Public Collections written by Christopher Wright and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets a new standard as a work of reference. It covers British and Irish art in public collections from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the end of the nineteenth, and it encompasses nearly 9,000 painters and 90,000 paintings in more than 1,700 separate collections. The book includes as well pictures that are now lost, some as a consequence of the Second World War and others because of de-accessioning, mostly from 1950 to about 1975 when Victorian art was out of fashion. By listing many tens of thousands of previously unpublished works, including around 13,000 which do not yet have any form of attribution, this book becomes a unique and indispensable work of reference, one that will transform the study of British and Irish painting.
Download or read book Farm Buildings written by John Woodforde and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, Farm Buildings gives a fascinating account of what has been happening in and around farm buildings since medieval times, and describes their structure, their function and their style. This is followed by a long section in which sixty-eight representative types of Welsh and English farm buildings are commented on by the author and illustrated by John Penoyre. John Woodforde emphasizes that just as people increasingly enjoy looking at old farm buildings, so too some farmers are coming to appreciate them with a new eye, noting that they possess in their yards assets whose value is greater in several ways than they used to think. This book will be of interest to students of architecture, history and agriculture.
