Book excerpt: From acclaimed novelist John Vercher, a profoundly moving novel of what it means to be a father, a son, a writer, and a biracial American fighting to reconcile the past Reeling from the sudden death of his teenage son, our narrator receives a letter from an attorney: he has just inherited a plot of land from his estranged grandfather. He travels to a beach town several hours south of his home with the intention of immediately selling the land. But upon inspection, what lies beneath the dirt is much more than he can process in the throes of grief. As a biracial Black man struggling with the many facets of his identity, he’s now the owner of a former plantation passed down by the men on his white mother’s side of the family. Vercher deftly blurs the lines between real and imagined, past and present, tragedy and humor, and fathers and sons in this story of discovery—and a fight for reclamation—of a painful past. With the wit of Paul Beatty’s The Sellout and the nuance of Zadie Smith’s On Beauty, Devil Is Fine is a darkly funny and brilliantly crafted dissection of the legacies we leave behind and those we inherit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise has become a model of cultural and theoretical thinking over the last two decades. Following Hegarty's influential 2007 book, Noise/Music, Annihilating Noise discusses in sixteen essays how noise offers a way of thinking about critical resistance, disruptive creativity and a complex yet enticing way of understanding the unexpected, the dissonant, the unfamiliar. It presents noise as a negativity with no fixed identity that can only be defined in connection and opposition to meaning and order. This book reaches beyond experimental music and considers noise as an idea and practice within a wide range of frameworks including social, ecological, and philosophical perspectives. It introduces the ways in which the disruptive implications of noise impact our ways of thinking, acting, and organizing in the world, and applies it to 21st-century concerns and today's technological ecology.

Book excerpt: Black metal is a paradox. A noisy underground metal genre brimming with violence and virulence, it has captured the world’s imagination for its harsh yet flamboyant style and infamous history involving arson, blasphemy, and murder. Today black metal is nothing less than a cultural battleground between those who claim it for nationalist and racist ends, and those who say: Nazi black metal fvck off! Black Metal Rainbows is a radical collection of writers, artists, activists, and visionaries, including Drew Daniel, Kim Kelly, Laina Dawes, Espi Kvlt, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Svein Egil Hatlevik, Eugene S. Robinson, Margaret Killjoy, and many more. Across essays and theory-fictions, artworks and comics, we say out loud: Long live black metal’s trve rainbow! This unique volume envisions black metal as always already open, inclusive, and unlimited: a musical genre whose vital spirit of total antagonism rebels against the forces of political conservatism. Beyond its clichés of grimness, nihilism, reaction, and signature black/white corpse-paint sneer, black metal today is a vibrant and revolutionary paradigm. This book reveals its ludic, carnival worlds animated by spirits of joy and celebration, community and care, queerness and camp, LGBTQI+ identities and antifascist, antiracist, and left-wing politics, not to mention endless aesthetic experimentation and fabulousness. From the crypt to the cloud, Black Metal Rainbows unearths black metal’s sparkling core and illuminates its prismatic spectrum: deep within the black, far beyond grimness, and over a darkly glittering rainbow!

Who Jesus is to you shapes everything, from the way you conduct yourself in public to how you treat other people and to how genuine of a person you are. Do you fear what's after this life? Are you sure but not sure about what you believe? Who you say Jesus is, is the linchpin to all the fears and uncertainties that we all face in our lives. Is Jesus your lord and savior? Is Jesus a myth, just the name in a story? I am here to tell you, that is not the case. Jesus can and will remove all fear and uncertainty from your life if you believe. How you answer the question "Who do you say that I am?" sets you up to see glory or see misery and torment. This book is an attempt to get to the heart of the matter, who Jesus is, and not get bogged down by all manner of theology. That so often just muddies the water. Who Jesus is to you decides your eternal destiny, and nobody can answer that question but you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at a group of Biblical truths from the perspective of an average citizen who uses Scripture, jokes, short stories, and life experiences to examine them. This book is for everyone, Christian or non-Christian, teen and older, who would like to have a serious but sometimes whimsical look at some of the most fundamental truths to be found in the Bible. It isn't a deep, scholarly endeavor but is designed to be basic and straightforward for the average reader. Jeff Tribby is a retired Naval Petty Officer who walked down a church aisle at age seven to join the church but became a true believer in Jesus Christ in the Philippine Islands during the Viet Nam era. During his naval career and afterward, his passion for writing steered him toward science fiction, which he blended with Christian beliefs and values. Following a short career as a library assistant at a local university, Jeff retired for medical reasons. This gave him some new insights and perspectives on his life in Jesus and decided to share a few of them with others in this book. Jeff also has a lifelong passion for music, plays twelve-string guitar, bass and banjo and also writes songs when inspired. His main goals are to share the gospel with others and give credit for all his blessings and talents to God. It is also his intention for you to enjoy this collection of elemental truth, be inspired and be blessed in the Lord always in all ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one keep classic books alive for young people today and teach them that literature is instructional and delightful? How does the teacher foster a classroom environment that encourages student participation and promotes enjoyment so that teenagers learn to appreciate literary study? More specifically, how can teachers cover centuries of American literature with students who dont appreciate why they should read material written centuries ago about people and issues that appear to be irrelevant to life today in a language that seems esoteric? The author of this series of high school teaching guides addresses these issues. How to Teach American Literature: A Practical Teaching Guide provides a detailed resource for teachers or anyone interested in an in-depth study of the subject. This second book in the series covers American literature from the Puritan era to contemporary works. Included are suggestions for cultivating a love for literature, teaching techniques, detailed analyses of each work, questions for review and test questions with suggested responses, essay topics, audiovisual aids, classroom handouts, and recommended books that enhance teaching. The author emphasizes two basic reasons for teaching literature: it is instructional and delightful. This book provides a comprehensive methodology for teaching the subject that a teacher could apply to one years lesson plans without further investment in time. Elizabeth McCallum Marlow has developed quality comprehensive guides for the teaching community based on her thirty-five years of experience and her passion for literature. Teaching professionals will find her tried and true practices to be invaluable. Johnathan Arnold, MBA, M.Ed, D.Ed.Min Headmaster Covenant Christian Academy, Cumming, GA

After reading this book, you will have the tools you need to navigate life with the Holy Spirit in the way that God always intended for you to have. In Unlimited, Tate helps readers discover a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit and realize His importance in their daily lives. Focusing on our need of the Holy Spirit, as well as His presence, power, and role in equipping us to fulfill our purpose, this book will help readers grow and better relate to the third person of the Trinity. Providing real-life, practical applications and examples, Tate shows readers that when they allow the Holy Spirit to fill and direct their lives, everything will change: relationships will be healed, self-esteem will be lifted, purpose will be revealed, direction will become clear, hope will overflow, peace will reign in their hearts, and God's goodness and faithfulness in their lives will be undeniable! Being filled daily by the Holy Spirit is the only satisfying source in life. The hardships and disappointments will drain us, but the Holy Spirit's power is available to us every day because His power and presence are unlimited!

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The single most important explanation, and the fullest explanation, of how Donald Trump became president of the United States . . . nothing less than the most important book that I have read this year.”—Lawrence O’Donnell How did we get here? In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen shows that what’s happening in our country today—this post-factual, “fake news” moment we’re all living through—is not something new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character. America was founded by wishful dreamers, magical thinkers, and true believers, by hucksters and their suckers. Fantasy is deeply embedded in our DNA. Over the course of five centuries—from the Salem witch trials to Scientology to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, from P. T. Barnum to Hollywood and the anything-goes, wild-and-crazy sixties, from conspiracy theories to our fetish for guns and obsession with extraterrestrials—our love of the fantastic has made America exceptional in a way that we've never fully acknowledged. From the start, our ultra-individualism was attached to epic dreams and epic fantasies—every citizen was free to believe absolutely anything, or to pretend to be absolutely anybody. With the gleeful erudition and tell-it-like-it-is ferocity of a Christopher Hitchens, Andersen explores whether the great American experiment in liberty has gone off the rails. Fantasyland could not appear at a more perfect moment. If you want to understand Donald Trump and the culture of twenty-first-century America, if you want to know how the lines between reality and illusion have become dangerously blurred, you must read this book. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE “This is a blockbuster of a book. Take a deep breath and dive in.”—Tom Brokaw “[An] absorbing, must-read polemic . . . a provocative new study of America’s cultural history.”—Newsday “Compelling and totally unnerving.”—The Village Voice “A frighteningly convincing and sometimes uproarious picture of a country in steep, perhaps terminal decline that would have the founding fathers weeping into their beards.”—The Guardian “This is an important book—the indispensable book—for understanding America in the age of Trump.”—Walter Isaacson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was invited to the studio. They were making a political TV show on the channel called "284-467". Non-Shuster was the anchorman of the show. On that TV channel they were giving false information rather often but actually it can be said about all the TV channels nowadays. They were deceiving their audiences. They were showing only entertainment programs and nothing else... In a while I found myself in the studio. Shaitan came with me. He just couldn't let me go alone though no one had invited him, even me. The studio was a huge hall with hundreds of common people. They were sitting, looking around stupidly and smiling. Everyone had a remote controller with the help of which they could manage that mad show. There were a lot of politicians delivering speeches and among them were absolutely cracked Unicellular representatives of the Supreme Government and demoncracy - Timoshenko, Yanukovich, Yuschenko, Kuchma, Yatsenyuk, Tigipko, Kravchuk and others. There were also a number of foreign guests. Shaitan always said that foreign countries shouldn't exist. All these representatives of demoncratic power are sheer rubbish. The power should be given to Multicellular Truth Authorities who unlike these Unicellular fools not only have their laws but also observe them. (…) Shaitan told me many times that no one ever audited the Unicellulars' initial capital. They only took and gave bribes (the more colloquial term is "kickbacks"). (…) Behind a glamorous show that these quasi-politicians organized they couldn't see the pitiful and sad life of common people whose representatives were sitting in the studio and applauding when big red words "Applause" appeared on a huge screen above their heads. That was very impressive. On the whole it was a quasi-political TV show without banners and active brain wash. The show was led by a man called Non-Savik Non-Shuster. The thing I liked most about the show was that it was broadcast live. The corresponding words were shown on the screen but in my eyes, in the light of my mind I was able to discern the word "Death" instead. Besides, I saw drops of blood dribbling from the strikethrough word "LIVE" and those were the drops of my hatred towards the fallen mankind. I was looking fantastic. I was wearing a mask of a smiling hare with little ears and a Ku Klux Klan-style robe with a pentagram on the chest and a fylfot on the place where the heart should be. I was looking as a Devil coming down from the Heavens… Or rather coming up from Hell. I came to this abominable fallen world in order to bring the Last Judgment and to save everyone from the Doomsday. I was wearing twisted horns like Satan's and wings of light like Lucifer's. My eyes were deep and expressive, like a pure lake in a bright day. They reminded the eyes of aliens that people used to draw in their comic books. Those merry green creatures… Besides, I was wearing bright shoes rather than shabby sandals like that Jesus the Carpenter who was crucified by moronic Unicellulars and then proclaimed their Great God… The God of foolishness and complete idiocy. In the shoes there weren't my legs as Shaitan occupied my human body. The one I had occupied before. And now these legs were carrying me in the opposite direction from the mankind and ignorance. In the direction of aliens! On that wonderful day I was holding not a baseball bat or a spade or a sword in my hand. I was holding an exquisite 'Champion" petrol-powered saw of the latest "137" model (by the way, the company was named after me). Drops of still warm blood of Unicellulars were trickling down from it. In the other hand I was holding Serpent-headed Hermes Warder. It was the warder of Gods' Herald, Consoler and Holy Spirit which is mentioned in all Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Pagan and other books. My name was Maytreya. For those who don't know it I would explain. Maytreya is Great Prophet, God of new world order. Maytreya is a unique bodhisattva honoured by all the branches of Buddhism. The prophecies said that "he would be memorized as a wrathful defender of the faith". And it will really happen, mark my words. "He will come from the East with a symbol of his Realm". He has already come. (…) In a letter to Caesar Michel Nostradamus indicated the time of my coming: "One day people's ignorance will be over and that day the supremacy of the greatest enlightenment".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteen extraordinary stories that comprise The Devil Is a Black Dog and Other Stories, writer and photojournalist Sándor Jászberényi shows us the human side of war and revolution in the contemporary Middle East and Africa, and of the social upheaval that has held Eastern Europe in its grip since the fall of communism. Characters contemplate the meaning of home, love, despair, family, and friendship against the backdrop of brutality. From Cairo to the Gaza Strip, from Benghazi to Budapest, religious men have their faith challenged, and people under the duress of war or traumatic personal memories deal with the feelings that emerge. Often they seem to suppress these feelings . . . but, no, not quite. Set in countries the author has reported from or lived in, these stories are all told from different perspectives, but always with the individual at the center: the mother, the soldier, the martyr, the religious man, the journalist, and so on. They form a kaleidoscope of miniworlds, of moments, of decisions that together put a face, an emotion, a thought behind humans who confront war and conflict. Although they are fiction, they could have all happened exactly as they are told. Each story leaves a powerful visual image, an unforgettable image you conjure up again and again. Jászberényi is able to do all this so convincingly, in part, because he himself is not a "helicopter journalist" but rather lives in a residential Cairo neighborhood. He is, moreover, from a corner of Eastern Europe where cynicism almost equates with survival, and yet his writing evinces not only wry humor but great sensitivity and a profound sense of beauty. He speaks Arabic (in addition to English and his native Hungarian) and immerses himself in the society he reports on. But, in doing so, he still remains a reporter, and as such the stories are approached with the clinical, observant eye of an outsider. Whether addressing the contradictions of international humanitarian work or the moral dilemmas faced by those who seek to improve the health and lives of women and girls, he does so in a singularly provocative and yet intelligent manner.
