Book Synopsis Designing Government by : Pearl Eliadis
Download or read book Designing Government written by Pearl Eliadis and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005-02-14 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do governments govern today and how well do they do it? How do governments choose the tools or instruments they will use to get things done? In today's world, how could these decisions be improved from the standpoint of efficiency, effectiveness, legitimacy and accountability? "Designing Government" brings together leading experts to examine the "instrument choice" perspective on government and public policy over the past two decades. The authors examine such issues as accountability, effectiveness, sustainability, legitimacy, and the impact of globalization. The debate is enriched by contributors from several countries who provide a comparative context and, most importantly, help chart a course for the future. Moving beyond the traditional regulatory sphere and its preoccupations with deregulation and efficiency, the authors trace the complex relationships between instrument choices and governance. "Designing Government" encourages the reader to consider factors in the design of complex mixes, such as issues of redundancy, context, the rule of law and accountability. These latter factors are especially central in today's world to the design and implementation of effective instrument choices by governments and, ultimately, to good governance. The authors conclude, in fact, that seeing instrument choice itself as part and parcel of designing government and achieving good governance is both the promise and the challenge for instrument-based perspectives in the years ahead. Contributors include Hans Bressers (University of Twente), Neil Gunningham (Australian National University), John Hoornbeck (University of Pittsburgh), Margaret Hill (Infrastructure Canada), Michael Howlett (Simon Fraser University), Bridget Hutter (London School of Economics and Political Science), Pierre Issalys (Université Laval), Réjean Landry (Laval University), Roderick A. Book Synopsis Temporary Work, Agencies and Unfree Labour by : Judy Fudge
Download or read book Temporary Work, Agencies and Unfree Labour written by Judy Fudge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfree labor has not disappeared from advanced capitalist economies. In this sense the debates among and between Marxist and orthodox economic historians about the incompatibility of capitalism and unfree labor are moot: the International Labour Organisation has identified forced, coerced, and unfree labor as a contemporary issue of global concern. Previously hidden forms of unfree labor have emerged in parallel with several other well-documented trends affecting labor conditions, rights, and modes of regulation. These evolving types of unfree labor include the increasing normalization of contingent work (and, by extension, the undermining of the standard contract of employment), and an increase in labor intermediation. The normative, political, and numerical rise of temporary employment agencies in many countries in the last three decades is indicative of these trends. It is in the context of this rapidly changing landscape that this book consolidates and expands on research designed to understand new institutions for work in the global era. This edited collection provides a theoretical and empirical exploration of the links between unfree labor, intermediation, and modes of regulation, with particular focus on the evolving institutional forms and political-economic contexts that have been implicated in, and shaped by, the ascendency of temp agencies. What is distinctive about this collection is this bi-focal lens: it makes a substantial theoretical contribution by linking disparate literatures on, and debates about, the co-evolution of contingent work and unfree labor, new forms of labor intermediation, and different regulatory approaches; but it further lays the foundation for this theory in a series of empirically rich and geographically diverse case studies. This integrative approach is grounded in a cross-national comparative framework, using this approach as the basis for assessing how, and to what extent, temporary agency work can be considered unfree wage labor

Book Synopsis Representing Victims of Sexual and Spousal Abuse by : Nathalie Des Rosiers
Download or read book Representing Victims of Sexual and Spousal Abuse written by Nathalie Des Rosiers and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, victims of sexual and spousal abuse in Canada have been turning increasingly to civil courts to demand compensation for their loss and suffering. In the context of growing public awareness and denunciation of violence against women and children, the law must be able to meet the demands of these victims. Originally published in French, this new and updated translation identifies and addresses the issues that are raised by the recent emergence of recourse to civil litigation by victims of sexual and spousal abuse. It outlines an egalitatian approach to the legal system, one that takes into account the unique needs of women and children. This work analyzes the conditions necessary to bring an action in civil liability for sexual and spousal abuse. It describes the remedies available within the Quebec Civil Code, as well as providing an analysis of Canadian Common Law jurisprudence on this issue. Finally, the book will also be of interest to jurists in civil law jurisdictions outside Canada and to scholars interested in comparative law.

Book Synopsis PROMOTION DE LA SANTE ET AUTONOMISATION DANS LE CONTEXTE AFRICAIN by : David HouŽto
Download or read book PROMOTION DE LA SANTE ET AUTONOMISATION DANS LE CONTEXTE AFRICAIN written by David HouŽto and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The overall objective of this study is to do a comparative analysis of the principles and modalities that are shaping the transformation of social assistance policy in Canada, primarily in Quebec. It also takes a brief look at the experiences of Ontario and New Brunswick. It describes 2 models of government intervention in the conception and implementation of the new contract of social assistance reciprocity between the poor and the State: workfare, as developed in the United States, and insertion, the chosen model in France. The focus of the study is to describe, in relation to these 2 models, the social assistance configuration of rights and duties currently being institutionalized between women and the State within Canada and Quebec.
