Book excerpt: QUELQUES ECHANTILLONS REPRESENTATIFS DE GRANDES FAMILLES DE SILICES DIVISEES SONT ETUDIES PAR SPECTROMETRIE DE VIBRATIONS. DEUX TYPES DE PROBLEMES INSTRUMENTAUX POSES PAR CETTE ETUDE SONT ANALYSES DANS UNE PREMIERE PARTIE. TOUT D'ABORD UNE DERIVE EN FREQUENCE, FONCTION DE LA TEMPERATURE, GENANTE DANS UNE UTILISATION SPECTROSCOPIQUE RAMAN, EST CONSTATEE POUR UN LASER A COLORANT ACCORDABLE CONTENANT UN FILTRE BIREFRINGENT. UNE DESCRIPTION THEORIQUE EST FAITE DE CETTE CAVITE, UNE SOLUTION INSTRUMENTALE EST TROUVEE. LE DEUXIEME POINT INSTRUMENTAL CONCERNE LA TECHNIQUE DE REFLEXION DIFFUSE INFRAROUGE ADAPTEE A L'ANALYSE DES MILIEUX PULVERULENTS. DES ANOMALIES SPECTRALES, ATTRIBUEES JUSQU'A PRESENT A LA REFLEXION SPECULAIRE, SONT DECRITES EN CONSIDERANT LES PHENOMENES PHYSIQUES DE DIFFUSION INTRINSEQUES. LA LOI DE KUBELKA ET MUNK PERMET D'INTERPRETER LE SPECTRE A CONDITION DE RECONNAITRE QUE LE FACTEUR DE DIFFUSION EST RELIE A LA DISPERSION ANORMALE DES INDICES ET A LA GRANULOMETRIE. DANS UNE DEUXIEME PARTIE, L'ANALYSE SPECTROSCOPIQUE EST MENEE SUR LES ECHANTILLONS DE SILICES DIVISEES. LES SPECTRES RAMAN DE 7 A 150 CM##1 SONT INTERPRETES A L'AIDE DE LA THEORIE FRACTALE. LA DISTRIBUTION MASSIQUE ET LA RUGOSITE DE SURFACE SUIVENT DES LOIS FRACTALES POUR DES ECHELLES RESPECTIVEMENT ENTRE 500 ET 10 NM (FREQUENCES RAMAN INFERIEURES A 30 CM##1) ET ENTRE 10 ET 1 NM (ENTRE 25 ET 150 CM##1). LES SPECTRES INFRAROUGES ET RAMAN A PLUS HAUTES FREQUENCES PERMETTENT DE DECRIRE LA SURFACE AU NIVEAU MOLECULAIRE: PONTS SILOXANES ET SILANOLS. LA SILICE PYROGENIQUE DEVELOPPE LOCALEMENT DES SURFACES DE TYPE CRISTOBALITE OU TRIDYNITE. LES BILLES DENSES QUI CONSTITUENT CETTE SILICE SONT OBTENUES PAR UN ASSEMBLAGE DE TETRAEDRES DE SIO#4 ET S'ORGANISENT ENSUITE POUR DONNER UN AGREGAT OUVERT. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the relaunch of the African Pollen Database, presents state-of-the-art of modern and ancient pollen data from sub-Saharan Africa, and promotes Open Access science. Pollen grains are powerful tools for the study of past vegetation dynamics because they preserve well within sedimentary deposits and have a huge diversity in ornamentation that allows different taxa to be determined. The reconstruction of past vegetation from the examination of ancient pollen records thus can be used to characterize the nature of past landscapes (e.g. abundance of forests vs. grasslands), provide insights into changes in biodiversity, and gain empirical evidence of vegetation response to climatic change and human activity. In this, the 35th Volume of "Palaeoecology of Africa", we bring together new data and extensive synthetic reviews to provide novel insights into the relationships between human evolution, human activity, climate change and vegetation dynamics during the Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years. Current and ongoing climate and land-use change is exerting pressure on modern vegetation formations and threatening the livelihoods and wellbeing of many peoples in Africa. In this book the focus is on the Quaternary because it is during this geological period that the modern vegetation formations developed into their current configurations against a backdrop of high magnitude global climate change (glacial-interglacial cycles), human evolution, and a growing human land-use footprint. In this book the latest information is presented and collated from around the African continent to parameterize past vegetation states, identify the drivers of vegetation change, and assess the vegetation resilience to change. To achieve this research from two broad themes are covered: (i) the present is the key to the past (i.e. studies which improve our understanding of modern environments so that we can better interpret evidence from the past), and (ii) the past is the key to the future (i.e. studies which unlock information on how and why vegetation changed in the past so one can better anticipate trajectories of future change). This Open Access book will provide a strong foundation for future research exploring past ecological, environmental and climatic change within Africa and the surrounding islands. The book is organized regionally (covering western, eastern, central, and southern Africa) and it contains specialized articles focused on particular topics (such as modern pollen-vegetation relationships and fire as a driver of vegetation change), as well as regional and pan-African syntheses drawing together decades of research to assess key scientific questions (including the role of climate in driving vegetation change and the role of vegetation change in human evolution). These articles will be useful to students and teachers from high school to the highest level of university who are interested in the origins and dynamics of vegetation in Africa. Furthermore, it is also meant to provide societally relevant information that can act as an inspiration for the development of sustainable management practices for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical methods play a significant role in the rapidly growing field of nonlinear optical materials. This volume discusses a number of successful or promising contributions. The overall theme of this volume is twofold: (1) the challenges faced in computing and optimizing nonlinear optical material properties; and (2) the exploitation of these properties in important areas of application. These include the design of optical amplifiers and lasers, as well as novel optical switches. Research topics in this volume include how to exploit the magnetooptic effect, how to work with the nonlinear optical response of materials, how to predict laser-induced breakdown in efficient optical devices, and how to handle electron cloud distortion in femtosecond processes.

NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included.
