Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the Government rubber program in 1942 and 1943, the methods of stress-strain testing given in A.S.T.M. Methods D 15 -- 41 and D 412 -- 41 were employed. It was generally recognized at that time that the precision of stress-strain testing of rubber vulcanizates left much to be desired. Consequently, as mentioned in the paper by Mr. Hucks, the Committee on Specifications for Government Synthetic Rubbers, in order to improve the precision of existing methods and to develop better methods, established a Subcommittee on Physical Testing. The name of this subcommittee was changed in 1944 to the Subcommittee on Test Methods and its scope was broadened to include chemical methods, also. The major portion of its efforts, however, continued to be devoted to physical testing. This subcommittee comprises representatives of the Office of Rubber Reserve, the National Bureau of Standards, several rubber goods manufacturers, the synthetic rubber plants, and the Bureau of Ships. This paper deals with the accomplishments in the field of stress-strain testing emanating from the laboratories represented by this group.

Book excerpt: Reasons for testing rubber materials and products fall into four categories: quality control, provision of design data, prediction of service performance and investigation of failure. Test methods have been standardised for almost all properties likely to be relevant to rubbers, and the appropriate standards are listed in this report. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database provides useful references for further reading.

Book excerpt: The availability of efficient and cost-effective technologies to repair or extend the life of aging military airframes is becoming a critical requirement in most countries around the world, as new aircraft becoming prohibitively expensive and defence budgets shrink. To a lesser extent a similar situation is arising with civil aircraft, with falling revenues and the high cost of replacement aircraft. This book looks at repair/reinforcement technology, which is based on the use of adhesively bonded fibre composite patches or doublers and can provide cost-effective life extension in many situations. From the scientific and engineering viewpoint, whilst simple in concept, this technology can be quite challenging particularly when used to repair primary structure. This is due to it being based on interrelated inputs from the fields of aircraft design, solid mechanics, fibre composites, structural adhesive bonding, fracture mechanics and metal fatigue. The technologies of non-destructive inspection (NDI) and, more recently smart materials, are also included. Operational issues are equally critical, including airworthiness certification, application technology (including health and safety issues), and training.Including contributions from leading experts in Canada, UK, USA and Australia, this book discusses most of these issues and the latest developments. Most importantly, it contains real histories of application of this technology to both military and civil aircraft.

Book excerpt: This extensively updated second edition was created for medical device, medical packaging, and food packaging design engineers, material product technical support, and research/development personnel. This comprehensive databook contains important characteristics and properties data on the effects of sterilization methods on plastics and elastomers. It provides a ready reference for comparing materials in the same family as well as materials in different families. Data is presented on 43 major plastic and elastomer packaging materials, including biodegradable or organic polymers. New to this edition are resin chapters containing textual summary information including: category; general description; applications; resistances to particular sterilization methods; and regulatory status considerations for use in medical devices and medical/food packaging. The resin chapter material supplier trade name product data is presented in graphical and tabular format, with results normalized to SI units, retaining the familiar format of the best selling first edition and allowing easy comparison between materials and test conditions.
