Book excerpt: For all of India’s myths, stories and moral epics, Indian history remains a curiously unpeopled place. In Incarnations, Sunil Khilnani fills that space, recapturing the human dimension of how the world’s largest democracy came to be. His trenchant portraits of emperors, warriors, philosophers, film stars and corporate titans—some famous, some unjustly forgotten—bring feeling, wry humour and uncommon insight to dilemmas that extend from ancient times to our own.

Book excerpt: 'This is an unusually rich and comprehensive comparative analysis of industrialisation and development in Asia. Drawing on the diverse experiences of Malaysia, Singapore, China, India and more, Roy, Blomqvist and Clark skilfully tease out the common institutional threads and the subtle differences in their developmental trajectories. An essential reading for all those interested in the lessons from Asian development.' – Jude Howell, London School of Economics, UK This is a thorough and comprehensive study – both in terms of country coverage and in-depth analysis – covering the economic development of all the major economies in the Asian continent, namely China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. Before embarking on analyses of different aspects of economic growth and development of these countries, the authors present a thought-provoking analysis of how institutional factors such as geography, history of religion, culture and political governance have been deeply interwoven with development dynamics to shape the growth and development trajectory that each country has subsequently followed. Each country's development path consequently appeared almost be pre-determined. Japan's role as the lead-country in technology transfer under the flying-geese pattern of development is discussed, however the emphasis has shifted of late to China, India, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. the authors also propose that instead of discussing the failure of India to catch up with China in growth and development outcomes, economists should be commenting on whether China, bestowed with India's highly decentralized democratic governance structure and institutional rigidities, would have been able to achieve the same results as that of India. Only then will a true understanding and appreciation of India's achievements in economic growth and development emerge. Economic Development in China, India and East Asia will be warmly welcomed and appreciated by academics and researchers of international and development economics as well as Asian development and economics. Policy makers and those involved in NGOs in the development and aid arenas will also find this of great interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All developing countries look alike in many respects. However, some of these countries are so closely alike that they conjure up in the mind the image of Siamese twins. There are many similarities between India and China such as the existence of surplus labour and interventionist government that deserve a comparative analysis. In this study, Dr. Srinivas has analysed the development of these two countries with reference to their growth performance, general development and economic transformation as the backdrop for understanding their comparative achievements in the realms of industrial growth and productivity, and liberalisation and industrial relations. The author has taken care to study the political economy of liberalisation for these booming economies, pointing out that liberalisation has created many negative impacts on labour and labour-capital relations. It has created new areas of contradictions and conflicts and has exacerbated the problems of proletarianisation and casualisation of labour. This book is relevant for both India and China in the present phase of their industrialisation. It is a welcome addition to the literature on the subject and should remain immensely helpful for students of comparative economic development and political economy, economic planners and those who determine public policy. Dr. Burra Srinivas is working as Research Associate with the Centre for Organization Development (COD), a premiere research, training and consultancy organization. He is specialising in the areas of corporate governance, leadership, communication, and human resource management. He has multi-disciplinary skills with political economy perspective. This apart, he is also working on the management of natural resources and its impact on rural/tribal area development. His name is published in Marquis Who's Who in the World, 1999 and 2000, USA. The University of Hyderabad awarded him doctorate in the year 2000 for his thesis in Public Policy. Earlier, he has completed his Master's degree from Mahatma Gandhi University, M.Phil from University of Hyderabad and also LL.B from Osmania University. He has a book and more than 20 publications in Indian and Foreign journals. Prior to joining COD, he was working as an ICSSR Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Economic & Social Studies (CESS), Hyderabad. As a faculty of COD, he has undertaken a project on ""Soil & Moisture Conservation Works and Tribal Development: Sustainability and Effectiveness."" Book excerpt: Insights developed in the past two decades by philosophers of the social sciences can serve to enrich the challenging intellectual tasks of conceptualizing, investigating, and representing the human past. Likewise, intimate engagement with the writings of historians can deepen philosophers’ understanding of the task of knowing the past. This volume brings these perspectives together and considers fundamental questions, such as: What is historical causation? What is a large historical structure? How can we best conceptualize “mentalities” and “identities”? What is involved in understanding the subjectivity of historical actors? What is involved in arriving at an economic history of a large region? How are actions and outcomes related? The arguments touch upon a wide range of historical topics -- the Chinese and French Revolutions, the extension of railroads in the nineteenth century, and the development of agriculture in medieval China.

Book excerpt: What is the relationship between internal development and integration into the global economy in developing countries? How and why do state–market relations differ? And do these differences matter in the post-cold war era of global conflict and cooperation? Drawing on research in China, India, and Russia and examining sectors from textiles to telecommunications, Micro-institutional Foundations of Capitalism introduces a new theory of sectoral pathways to globalization and development. Adopting a historical approach, the book's Strategic Value Framework shows how state elites perceive the strategic value of sectors in response to internal and external pressures. Sectoral structures and organization of institutions further determine the role of the state in market coordination and property rights arrangements. The resultant dominant patterns of market governance vary by country and sector within country. These national configurations of sectoral models are the micro-institutional foundations of capitalism, which mediate globalization and development.
