Book excerpt: Development of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with higher capacity has been booming worldwide, as growing concerns about environmental issues and increasing petroleum costs. The demands for the LIBs include high energy and power densities, and better cyclic stability in order to meet a wide range of applications, such as portable devices and electric vehicles. Silicon has recently been explored as a promising anode material due to its low discharge potential (0.4 V) and high specific capacity (4200 mAh gsuper-1/super). The capacity of silicon potentially exceeds more than 10 times of the conventional graphite anode (372 mAh gsuper-1/super). However, the silicon anode experiences huge volume expansion (400%) and contraction during electrochemical cycles, resulting in pulverization and disintegration of the active material. For the improvement of the battery performance, understanding of the failure mechanism associated with the stress evolution during cycling is critical. This study aims (1) to develop high performance anode materials and (2) to analyze the mechanism of the capacity fading using a novel in-situ characterization technique in order to optimize the electrode design for better operation of the battery. The silicon nitride thin film anodes were investigated for the improvement of cycling performance. In addition, the rate performance was enhanced by controlling the parameters in film deposition. Si-based thin films undergo large stresses induced by the volume changes, which results in material degradation and capacity fading. Hence, the in-situ measurement of the electrochemical processes is critical to clarify how the electrode degrades with time under cycling. For the in-situ measurement, a white light interferometry (WLI) and laser vibrometer were used to gather quantitative data. Amorphous silicon (italica

Book excerpt: Silicon (Si) and Silicon Monoxide (SiO) have been considered promising candidates for the active material of the negative electrodes for the next-generation Li-ion batteries (LiBs), primarily due to their high specific capacities (Si:3579 mAh/g, SiO:1710 mAh/g) compared with state of the art graphite-based anodes (372 mAh/g). However, poor cycle-life and rate capability resulting from the large volume expansion (Si:280%, SiO:118%) during lithium uptake in Si or SiO particles are currently preventing this anode materials from being a viable commercial solution for electrified vehicle applications. These issues warrant careful and thorough studies to first characterize many important electrochemical properties of Si-based anode materials. In addition, simulation tools that can advance performance prediction and system-level studies, such as the first-principle, electrochemical models already developed for state of the art lithium ion battery technologies, need to be developed for silicon-based anodes due to the fundamental physical difference in their behavior when compared to graphite-based anodes. The lack of such models is due to not only the lack of information that are necessary for model parameterization but also the difficulties in developing mathematical representations of electrochemical phenomena induced by large volume changes.

Book excerpt: Battery material research has been one of the major areas of study in the last ~30 years due to the huge impact of battery technology in our daily lives. Both the discovery of new materials and their electrochemical optimization requires an in-depth and fundamental understanding of the composition and structure at different length scales. Local, long-range structure, polymorphism, microstructure, composite formulation and nanoscale engineering all contribute to a materials innate ability to deliver the best performance as an electrode in a battery. Importantly, the evolution of all these components during battery function determine essentially all the pertinent battery characteristics such as lifetime and energy storage density. For these reasons, it is critical to determine materials structure at various length scales, in order to be able to predict or understand their properties and propose changes to improve their electrochemical behavior. In this sense, conventional characterization techniques of the material itself are very useful in the first stages of research but, in many cases, the use of in-situ or in operando characterization techniques provides a unique way of understanding materials performance or evolution during battery operation. The challenge becomes greater in terms of experimental design because these techniques involve devising and fabricating specific electrochemical cells that fulfill the requirements of the technique but deliver electrochemical performance akin to a real-life device.

Book excerpt: The wetting of the electrodes due to liquid electrolyte used in Li-ion batteries can significantly impact the mechanochemical properties of polymer binders. To observe and characterize this, we employed in-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) based force spectroscopy. Two different polymer binders for Si anodes, sodium (Na) alginate and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF), are immersed in a solution of di-methyl carbonate (DMC) and analyzed using a micro-cantilever with a Si tip, to mimic the actual Si – binder interface in Si anodes. Na-alginate is found to have orders of magnitude higher adhesive forces than PVdF after immersion in liquid electrolyte, which can be attributed to a functional carboxyl group in Na-alginate, possibly leading to a formation of hydrogen bonds and/or ion-dipole interaction with Si. In comparison PVdF demonstrates considerably weaker adhesive forces owing to Van der Waals’ interaction. It is also found that Na-alginate retains its mechanical strength better than PVdF in liquid electrolyte, by retaining more than 90% of its Youngs modulus, while the Young’s modulus of PVdF decreases to lower than 80% after immersion in electrolyte for 4 hours. Our nano-scale AFM analysis data agrees well with literature that are mostly based on macro-scale characterization. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the benefits of using force spectroscopy, AM-FM, and in-situ AFM techniques to characterize the evolution of interfaces between electrode components at a nano-scale under battery operating conditions.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces of lithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electromechanical reduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widely recognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous related research efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. This book carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings and advances on this topic.

Book excerpt: "This is the first machine-generated scientific book in chemistry published by Springer Nature. Serving as an innovative prototype defining the current status of the technology, it also provides an overview about the latest trends of lithium-ion batteries research. This book explores future ways of informing researchers and professionals. State-of-the-art computer algorithms were applied to: select relevant sources from Springer Nature publications, arrange these in a topical order, and provide succinct summaries of these articles. The result is a cross-corpora auto-summarization of current texts, organized by means of a similarity-based clustering routine in coherent chapters and sections. This book summarizes more than 150 research articles published from 2016 to 2018 and provides an informative and concise overview of recent research into anode and cathode materials as well as further aspects such as separators, polymer electrolytes, thermal behavior and modelling. With this prototype, Springer Nature has begun an innovative journey to explore the field of machine-generated content and to find answers to the manifold questions on this fascinating topic. Therefore it was intentionally decided not to manually polish or copy-edit any of the texts so as to highlight the current status and remaining boundaries of machine-generated content. Our goal is to initiate a broad discussion, together with the research community and domain experts, about the future opportunities, challenges and limitations of this technology."--Publisher's website.
