Book Synopsis Career Development and Systems Theory by : Wendy Patton
Download or read book Career Development and Systems Theory written by Wendy Patton and published by Sense Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Systems Theory Framework was developed to produce a metatheoretical framework through which the contribution of all theories to our understanding of career behaviour could be recognised. In addition it emphasises the individual as the site for the integration of theory and practice. Its utility has become more broadly acknowledged through its application to a range of cultural groups and settings, qualitative assessment processes, career counselling, and multicultural career counselling. For these reasons, the STF is a very valuable addition to the field of career theory. In viewing the field of career theory as a system, open to changes and developments from within itself and through constantly interrelating with other systems, the STF and this book are adding to the pattern of knowledge and relationships within the career field. The contents of this book will be integrated within the field as representative of a shift in understanding existing relationships within and between theories. In the same way, each reader wilt integrate the contents of the book within their existing views about the current state of career theory and within their current theory-practice relationship. This book was released on 2013 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing what career to pursue is a major decision that young people have to make. The choice of a career would serve as a vehicle through which they can pursue their interests and showcase their intelligence and capabilities. Thus, it is imperative that factors that contribute to one's career decicision-making self-efficacy be determined. This study looks into the profile of the respondents in terms of their self-concept, career maturity, parental support and career decision-making self-efficacy as well as the intercorrelations among the variables with the end in view of developing a program that will help them in making wise decisions and lead them to career satisfaction. Two hundred (200) 2nd and 3rd year college students composed of 85 (42%) males and 115 (58%) females, ages 17-24 years old were involved in the study. In these year levels, the students are still allowed to shift programs as they are exposed to general courses only. Descriptive correlational design using Pearson Product Moment Correlation method was employed. Coppersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI), Career Maturity Inventory-Attitude Scale (CMI-R), Career-Related PArent Support Scale (CRPSS) and Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy-Short Form (CDMSE) were used to gather the data from the respondents. The results revealed that: (a) there is significant correlation between self-concept and career decision-making self efficacy. (b) there is significant correlation between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity and (c) there is significant correlation between parental support and career decision-making self-efficacy. Also, a semi-structured interview was conducted among 14 selected college students to determine the importance of self-concept, career maturity, parental support, and career decision-making self-efficacy. These results, most importantly could serve as important reference in the development of a career guidance program aimed at enhancing one's career self-efficacy.

Book Synopsis Issues in Career Development by : Donald Thompson
Download or read book Issues in Career Development written by Donald Thompson and published by IAP. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume will examine the historical emergence of the concept of career including early ideas about the meaning and role of work and how it fits with life. The concept of career development is of relatively recent origin. It was not until the early 20th Century that serious attention was given to the role of work and career as it applied to the common man. While the concept of “vocation” has historical roots that date back centuries, vocation (or calling) was typically only applied to the professions of the clergy, law and medicine. These individuals had careers, while the common man had a job. Perhaps the most significant event that changed both the labor market and the associated socio-cultural values about work was the 2nd World War. The technological advances that were brought about by the war were profound in terms of changing the nature of work, and the war brought about a significant change in the gender makeup of our labor force as millions of women entered the labor market to support the war effort. The combined effects of technology, a radical new value system, and a burgeoning economy changed everything.
