Book excerpt: OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTAL COMPOSITIONS INVESTIGATED, THE 0.15 C - 14.5 Cr - Mo - V - Co type steels indicated the best combination of desired characteristics and properties. A nominally 0.15 C - 14.5 Cr - 5 Mo - 0.5 V - 13.5 Co steel, Steel AFC 77, was selected for scaling-up for production on mill facilities. Steel AFC 77 has very high strength (290,000 psi tensile strength) at the ambient temperature and retains its strength remarkably well up to about 1200 F (120,000 psi tensile strength at 1200 F). In fact, Steel AFC 77 has appreciably higher strength, particularly in prolonged exposures, than any stainless steel known. The excellent strength properties over a wide temperature range are accompanied by good ductility; indications of good formability and weldability were also obtained. In addition to its superior mechanical properties, Steel AFC 77 is resistant to atmospheric corrosion and oxidation. (Author).

Book Synopsis New Materials for Next-Generation Commercial Transports by : Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft
Download or read book New Materials for Next-Generation Commercial Transports written by Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.

Book Synopsis High Performance Materials in Aerospace by : Harvey M. Flower
Download or read book High Performance Materials in Aerospace written by Harvey M. Flower and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace presents an extremely challenging environment for structural materials and the development of new, or improved, materials: processes for material and for component production are the subject of continuous research activity. It is in the nature of high performance materials that the steps of material and of component production should not be considered in isolation from one another. Indeed, in some cases, the very process of material production may also incorporate part or all of the component production itself and, at the very least, will influence the choice of material/component production method to be employed. How ever, the developments currently taking place are to be discovered largely within the confines of specialist conferences or books each dedicated to perhaps a single element of the overall process. In this book contributors, experts drawn from both academia and the aerospace industry, have joined together to combine their individual knowledge to examine high performance aerospace materials in terms of their production, structure, properties and applications. The central interrelationships between the development of structure through the production route and between structure and the properties exhibited in the final component are considered. It is hoped that the book will be of interest to students of aeronautical engineering and of materials science, together with those working within the aerospace industry. Harvey M. Book Synopsis Aerospace Alloys by : Stefano Gialanella
Download or read book Aerospace Alloys written by Stefano Gialanella and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an up-to-date overview on the main classes of metallic materials currently used in aeronautical structures and propulsion engines and discusses other materials of potential interest for structural aerospace applications. The coverage encompasses light alloys such as aluminum-, magnesium-, and titanium-based alloys, including titanium aluminides; steels; superalloys; oxide dispersion strengthened alloys; refractory alloys; and related systems such as laminate composites. In each chapter, materials properties and relevant technological aspects, including processing, are presented. Individual chapters focus on coatings for gas turbine engines and hot corrosion of alloys and coatings. Readers will also find consideration of applications in aerospace-related fields. The book takes full account of the impact of energy saving and environmental issues on materials development, reflecting the major shifts that have occurred in the motivations guiding research efforts into the development of new materials systems. Aerospace Alloys will be a valuable reference for graduate students on materials science and engineering courses and will also provide useful information for engineers working in the aerospace, metallurgical, and energy production industries.
