This book was released on 1996 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, compiled with the assistance of Statistics Canada, shows that agriculture is no longer the dominant sector providing employment for rural populations in OECD countries. Today, in all member nations, the vast majority of rural employment opportunities are in non-agricultural activities. Even in the predominantly rural regions, less than a quarter of the total employment is in agriculture, forestry and fisheries. At least every second job is in the service sector, and in some countries, the proportion is even higher. Employment growth in the predominantly rural regions has been primarily, if not exclusively, due to substantial increases in service sector employment. Between 1980 and 1990, employment in this sector grew 15% to 25% in those regions. In most countries, this was often better than the national average in developing new employment opportunities. In many countries, such as Canada and Norway, a significant number of rural regions did better than the national average in developing new employment opportunities. So, being rural is not a handicap to job creation. On the contrary, some rural regions are the most innovative and dynamic elements of a country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many rural areas continue to experience depopulation and economic decline, others are facing rapid in migration, as well as employment and income growth. Much of this growth is due to the presence and use of amenity resources, broadly defined as qualities of a region that make it an attractive place to live and work. Rather than extracting natural resources for external markets, these communities have begun to build economies based on promoting environmental quality. Amenities and Rural Development explores the paradigmatic shift in how we view land resources and the potential for development in amenity-rich rural regions.

Book excerpt: The population and housing census is part of an integrated national statistical system, which may include other censuses (for example, agriculture), surveys, registers and administrative files. It provides, at regular intervals, the benchmark for population count at national and local levels. For small geographical areas or sub-populations, it may represent the only source of information for certain social, demographic and economic characteristics. For many countries the census also provides a solid framework to develop sampling frames. This publication represents one of the pillars for data collection on the number and characteristics of the population of a country.

The policies in this statement apply to the rural areas, including country towns and villages and the wider, largely undeveloped countryside up to the fringes of larger urban areas. The key principles identified are: (i) decisions on development should be based on sustainable development principles; (ii) good quality accessible development within towns and villages should be allowed where it benefits the local community; (iii) accessibility should be a key consideration, with emphasis on access by public transport, walking and cycling; (iv) new building in the open countryside away from existing settlements should be strictly controlled; (v) priority should be given to the reuse of brownfield sites. This PPS replaces PPG 7 (1997) with the exception of PPG7's Annex E, which provides further guidance on permitted development rights for agriculture and forestry and will remain extant pending a review by ODPM of the General Permitted Development Order 1995.
