Book excerpt: Nuclear power systems are presently being investigated as an alternative for both commercial and military space power systems because of their projected longevity of 7 to 10 years, their mass advantage over other space power sources at powers above approximately 25 kW{sub e}, and their ability to operate without direct illumination from the sun. These space-nuclear power systems are being designed to supply from tens of kilowatts to multimegawatts of power for continuous operation of seven years and more. Space-nuclear power systems designs that meet these requirements will not be available for refueling or maintenance during their lifetime. To ensure that the space-nuclear power system will operate safely and will respond in a predictable and desired manner, the design of the system's controller must account for changes in the system parameters over its lifetime. This paper applies model-reference adaptive control to an increase in the power demand by the load. A model-reference adaptive controller will force the actual space-nuclear power system to follow the predictable and desired response of a reference model, despite changes in the actual system's operating parameters. Included in this paper are the model-reference adaptive control algorithm, the description of the computer simulation of a space-nuclear power system and the reference model, and results that demonstrate the application of model-reference adaptive control to a change in the load power demand. The results demonstrate that model-reference adaptive control can ensure the transient response of the system despite differences between the design of the system and the as-built system as well as for variations in the systems parameters. 5 refs., 3 figs.

Book excerpt: The scope of this effort includes the theoretical development of a multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) Model Reference Control (MRC) algorithm, (i.e., model following control law), Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) algorithm and the formulation of a nonlinear model of a typical electric power plant. Previous single-input, single-output MRAC algorithm designs have been generalized to MIMO MRAC designs using the MIMO MRC algorithm. This MRC algorithm, which has been developed using Command Generator Tracker methodologies, represents the steady state behavior (in the adaptive sense) of the MRAC algorithm. The MRC algorithm is a fundamental component in the MRAC design and stability analysis. An enhanced MRC algorithm, which has been developed for systems with more controls than regulated outputs, alleviates the MRC stability constraint of stable plant transmission zeroes. The nonlinear power plant model is based on the Cromby model with the addition of a governor valve management algorithm, turbine dynamics and turbine interactions with extraction flows. An application of the MRC algorithm to a linearization of this model demonstrates its applicability to power plant systems. In particular, the generated power changes at 7% per minute while throttle pressure and temperature, reheat temperature and drum level are held constant with a reasonable level of control. The enhanced algorithm reduces significantly control fluctuations without modifying the output response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research began in the summer of 2006. During that summer a method was developed to estimate the gravity gradient as well as the nadir vector of a Plug-and-Play [PNP] satellite. This was done based on the assumptions that there were perturbations in the satellite model that kept the satellite from knowing this information a priori. An indirect adaptive estimation scheme was used to accomplish this goal. However it is impractical to do this for each perturbation in the plant. By the very nature of PNP Satellites, there could be errors in among other things, reaction wheel mounting/orientation, star tracker location/orientation, satellite center of mass (COM), and payload location/orientation. An adaptive scheme to estimate each error is not efficient and ultimately is not the goal. The goal is to accurately control the satellite despite the numerous and possibly large errors inherent in PNP Satellite models. Instead of using indirect adaptive methods to gain precise knowledge of the plant, direct adaptive control methods will be used to overcome the errors of the plant and gain precise control of the satellite. One way of overcoming the inaccuracies of the model is to assume the spacecraft dynamics are largely unknown. A shift in philosophy was then taken from indirect adaptive methods to direct methods. Direct Reference and Model Reference Adaptive Controller [DRAC & DMRAC] are then developed that will precisely and robustly control the attitude of a PNP satellite. The benefits demonstrated by the DMRAC methodologies extend well past plug and play satellites and could be utilized in any space application.

Book excerpt: An easily implemented adaption technique was derived analytically for the synthesis of model-referenced adaptive control systems. The simplicity of this technique gives it a distinct advantage over other techniques that have been described in the literature and makes it attractive for practical applications. The direct approach to the problem employs the state-space point of view. Solving the differential equations of the reference model and the adaptive control system leads to an expression showing the explicit functional dependence of the performance error on the adaptive parameters. Manipulation of the expression for performance error yields the adaption equations, which are very simple to implement. Model-referenced adaptive control systems utilizing this simplified adaption technique are investigated by means of an extensive stability analysis. Computer simulations are made to verify the various theoretical results obtained and to give some indication as to the performance capabilities of the simplified adaption technique. The model-referenced approach is shown to have application in the design of high-performance aircraft and missiles.

Book excerpt: Flight research experiments have demonstrated that adaptive flight controls can be an effective technology for improving aircraft safety in the event of failures or damage. However, the nonlinear, timevarying nature of adaptive algorithms continues to challenge traditional methods for the verification and validation testing of safety-critical flight control systems. Increasingly complex adaptive control theories and designs are emerging, but only make testing challenges more difficult. A potential first step toward the acceptance of adaptive flight controllers by aircraft manufacturers, operators, and certification authorities is a very simple design that operates as an augmentation to a non-adaptive baseline controller. Three such controllers were developed as part of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration flight research experiment to determine the appropriate level of complexity required to restore acceptable handling qualities to an aircraft that has suffered failures or damage. The controllers consist of the same basic design, but incorporate incrementally-increasing levels of complexity. Derivations of the controllers and their adaptive parameter update laws are presented along with details of the controllers implementations. Book excerpt: Spacecraft Dynamics and Control: The Embedded Model Control Approach provides a uniform and systematic way of approaching space engineering control problems from the standpoint of model-based control, using state-space equations as the key paradigm for simulation, design and implementation. The book introduces the Embedded Model Control methodology for the design and implementation of attitude and orbit control systems. The logic architecture is organized around the embedded model of the spacecraft and its surrounding environment. The model is compelled to include disturbance dynamics as a repository of the uncertainty that the control law must reject to meet attitude and orbit requirements within the uncertainty class. The source of the real-time uncertainty estimation/prediction is the model error signal, as it encodes the residual discrepancies between spacecraft measurements and model output. The embedded model and the uncertainty estimation feedback (noise estimator in the book) constitute the state predictor feeding the control law. Asymptotic pole placement (exploiting the asymptotes of closed-loop transfer functions) is the way to design and tune feedback loops around the embedded model (state predictor, control law, reference generator). The design versus the uncertainty class is driven by analytic stability and performance inequalities. The method is applied to several attitude and orbit control problems. The book begins with an extensive introduction to attitude geometry and algebra and ends with the core themes: state-space dynamics and Embedded Model Control Fundamentals of orbit, attitude and environment dynamics are treated giving emphasis to state-space formulation, disturbance dynamics, state feedback and prediction, closed-loop stability Sensors and actuators are treated giving emphasis to their dynamics and modelling of measurement errors. Numerical tables are included and their data employed for numerical simulations Orbit and attitude control problems of the European GOCE mission are the inspiration of numerical exercises and simulations The suite of the attitude control modes of a GOCE-like mission is designed and simulated around the so-called mission state predictor Solved and unsolved exercises are included within the text - and not separated at the end of chapters - for better understanding, training and application Simulated results and their graphical plots are developed through MATLAB/Simulink code
