Book excerpt: The effects of pile irradiations on the physical properties and corrosion resistance of U-- Mo, U-- Nb; and U--Si alloys are reported. The dimensional stability under irradiation of the gamma phase U-- Mo and U-- Nb alloys is excellent; however, an isotropic volume increase of 4 to 6% per wt.% burnup may limit the ultimate fuel element life. Corrosion resistance of the gamma-phase alloys appesrs to be improved when subjected to s neutron field; this is attributed to an irrsdiation induced stabilization of the gamma phases. The U/ sub 3/Si alloy, on the other hand, suffered severe deterioration, particularly of corrosion resistance. Changes in electrical resistivity, hardness, mechanical properties, and crystal structure are presented and the mechanisms producing the observed changes discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments concerned with the development of zirconium-base alloys having corrosion resistance and strength superior to Zircaloy-2 and/or the development of materials of equivalent corrosion resistance but exhibiting enhanced strength are presented. After 3000 hr exposure to 680 deg F water, binary zirconium alloys showed corrosion resistance superior to Zircaloy-2. Alloys considered promising and which offer the highest chance of success are based on the binary compositions Zr--1Cr, Zr--ISb, Zr--O.5Nb, and Zr--O.5Sn with small additions of Te, Ge, Cr, or Fe. Alloys containing relatively high percentages of solute elements did not exhibit satisfactory corrosion properties. Corrosion data on experimental alloys in 750 deg F steam indicate a few highly proising and initially acceptable materials, which are Zr--3Cr --lFe, Zr--3Cr-- 0.25Te, and Zr--lV--lFe. Thus far the corrosion resistance is better than Zircaloy-2 and the higher alloy content indicates enhanced elevated temperature strength. (P.C.H.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of zirconium-base alloys possessing exceptionally good corrosion resistance to 680 deg F water or 750 deg --900 deg F steam and/or improved strength at elevated temperatures with corrosion resistance equivalent to Zircaloy-2 was investigated. Approximately 100 binary compositions were screened by corrosion testing in 680 deg F water and 750 deg F steam; selected compositions were exposed to 900 deg F steam. Data obtained indicated a number of highly promising bases for ternary alloy studies in superheated water or steam. On the basis of 2000-hour tests, alloys were obtained which initially satisfy the objectives for 680 deg F water. The compositions are based on Zr-Nb, Zr-Sn, and Zr-Sb with ternary additions of Te, Ge, or Nb. Initial data for exposure to 750 deg and 900 deg F steam indicate very promising corrosion behavior of some ternary alloys. (auth).
