Book excerpt: Corrosion of metallic structure materials at elevated temperatures in complex multicomponent gas environments is a potential problem in many fossil energy systems, especially those using coal as a feedstock. The use of appropriate corrosion-resistant coatings on metallic components can minimize material degradation and extend component life. In the present study, the chemical compatibility of a number of coatings is examined by exposing them to simulated oxygen/sulfur mixed-gas environments at metal temperatures of 500 and 650°C. Coatings were developed via pack cementation and electrospark deposition techniques on T22 and T91 substrates. The oxidation/sulfidation test results for the coated specimens were compared with those for the uncoated alloys and for high-chromium structural alloys of interest in fossil energy applications. Coatings tested were Fe--Cr--Mo. Alloys tested include nickel base, nickel, and chromium alloys, and stainless steel 310. 5 refs., 12 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films 1990 presents the Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and 8th International Conference on Thin Films, held in San Diego, California on April 2-6, 1990. It contains 219 papers covering a wide range of topics related to metallurgical coatings and thin films, including high temperature coatings, hard coatings, diamond films, tribology, and ion beam modification. Organized into 99 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion of a thermochemical model for diamond growth from the vapor phase and an experiment in large area diamond coating using a combustion flame torch in its traversing mode. It then explores the properties of diamond films, preparation of diamond-like carbon films using various ion-beam-assisted techniques, deposition of diamond-like films by laser ablation, and coating of cubic BN films on different substrates. The book examines surface processes and rate-determining steps in plasma-induced chemical vapor deposition, and addition of rare earths to improve scale adherence on heat-resisting alloys and coatings. The reader is introduced to high temperature wear and clearance control coatings, thermal barrier coatings, and corrosion resistant coatings. The book also discusses modification of coatings/surfaces to reduce friction; the mechanics of the tribology of thin films systems; mechanochemical interactions in the tribological behavior of materials; analysis and micromechanical testing of tribological coatings; surface modification using directed ion beams; and industrial equipment and processes. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in metallurgical coatings and thin films.

Book excerpt: Superhydrophobic surfaces, with a water contact angle >150°, have attracted both academic and industrial interest due to their wide range of applications, such as water proofing, anti-fogging, antifouling, anti-icing, fluidic drag reduction and anti-corrosion. Currently the majority of superhydrophobic coatings are created using organic chemicals with low surface energy. However, the lack of mechanical strength and heat resistance prevents the use of these coatings in harsh environments. Quality superhydrophobic coatings developed using inorganic materials are therefore highly sought after. Ceramics are of particular interest due to their high mechanical strength, heat and corrosion resistance. Such superhydrophobic coatings have recently been successfully fabricated using a variety of ceramics and different approaches, and have shown the improved wear and tribocorrosion resistance properties. This Special Issue will focus on the recent developments in the fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings and their robustness against corrosion and wear resistance, but the original work on other properties of superhydrophobic coatings are also welcome. In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Robust superhydrophobic coatings; - Coatings with super-wettability in multifunctional applications; - Wetting effects on corrosion and tribology; - Hierarchical Coating for wetting and modelling

Book excerpt: Materials are at the center of all technological advances; it is evident in considering the spectacular progress that has been made in fields as diverse as engineering, medicine, biology, etc. Materials science and technology must develop researches allowing the generation of new methods of protection to reduce fundamentally the losses of human life as well as the economic ones. The former are impossible of quantifying, while the latter are highly significant; thus, only those derived from corrosive processes in their different forms reach, in technologically developed countries, about 4% of the Gross National Product (GNP), while those derived from fire action range from 0.5 to 1.0% of the mentioned GNP. The book, in the different chapters, displays original systems of superficial protection and of low environmental impact to minimize the losses by corrosion and the fire action.

Book excerpt: The field of corrosion science and engineering is on the threshold of important advances. Advances in lifetime prediction and technological solutions, as enabled by the convergence of experimental and computational length and timescales and powerful new modeling techniques, are allowing the development of rigorous, mechanistically based models from observations and physical laws. Despite considerable progress in the integration of materials by design into engineering development of products, corrosion considerations are typically missing from such constructs. Similarly, condition monitoring and remaining life prediction (prognosis) do not at present incorporate corrosion factors. Great opportunities exist to use the framework of these materials design and engineering tools to stimulate corrosion research and development to achieve quantitative life prediction, to incorporate state-of-the-art sensing approaches into experimentation and materials architectures, and to introduce environmental degradation factors into these capabilities. Research Opportunities in Corrosion Science and Engineering identifies grand challenges for the corrosion research community, highlights research opportunities in corrosion science and engineering, and posits a national strategy for corrosion research. It is a logical and necessary complement to the recently published book, Assessment of Corrosion Education, which emphasized that technical education must be supported by academic, industrial, and government research. Although the present report focuses on the government role, this emphasis does not diminish the role of industry or academia.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental understanding of the role of surface films that form in aqueous environments containing hydroxide and chloride, on the corrosion behaviour of pure magnesium was developed. The equivalent electrical circuits for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy that modelled the corrosion mechanism of magnesium in aqueous environments were developed and verified. Laser-assisted surface modification and organo-silane coatings were investigated for improvement of corrosion resistance of AZ91D. In spite of the change in corrosionmorphology, laser-assisted surface modification does not help in improving the over all corrosion resistance of the alloy. Role of specific alkaline surface pre-treatments on the corrosion resistance performance of Bis-1, 2-(TriethoxySilyl) Ethane BTSE coated AZ91D alloy has been investigated. A specific pretreatment before BTSE coating was found to improve the corrosion resistance of the coated substrates, as evidenced by the potentiodynamic polarization results and corroboratedby EIS analysis. Silane coatings were thus developed using Bis (Tri-Methoxy Silyl Propyl)Amine (BTMSPA), Bis (Tri-Methoxy Silyl Propyl) Tetrasulphide (BTMSPT), Bis-(TriEthoxy Silyl Propyl)-Ethane-Dithiol-Carbamate (BTESPEDC), and (2-Di Ethyl PhosphatoEthyl) Tri Ethoxy Silane (DEPETES). The silane coatings developed using BTMSPA and BTMSPT did not improve corrosion resistance. A silane coating developed from novel long chain BTESPEDC silane provided considerable improvement in corrosion resistance, which was attributed to the presence of hydrophobic thiol group and improved cross-linking between the silane molecules. A silanecoating developed using mixture of BTMSPA and DEPETES upon alkali treated AZ91D provided an improvement of at least three orders of magnitude in the corrosion resistance of the coated substrate. EIS analysis revealed high resistance to ingress of electrolyte, and improved cross-linking within the film as the primary reasons of improved corrosion resistance due to the coating of this silane mixture.
