Book excerpt: Charged particle accelerators, such as the ones that power Free Electron Lasers (FEL), require high quality (low emittance) beams for efficient operation. Accurate and reliable beam diagnostics are essential to monitoring beam parameters in order to maintain a high quality beam. Optical Transition Radiation Interferometry (OTRI) has shown potential to be a quality diagnostic that is especially useful for high brightness electron beams such as Jefferson Labs FEL energy recovery linac. The purpose of this project is to further develop OTRI beam diagnostic techniques. An optical system was designed to make beam size and divergence measurements as well as to prepare for experiments in optical phase space mapping. Beam size and beam divergence measurements were taken to calculate the emittance of the Jefferson Lab FEL. OTRI is also used to separate core and halo beam divergences in order to estimate core and halo emittance separately.

Book excerpt: Optical transition radiation (OTR) measurements of the electron-beam emittance have been performed at a location just before the wiggler in the Los Alamos Free-Electron Laser (FEL) experiment. Beam profiles and beam divergence patterns from a single macropulse were recorded simultaneously using two intensified charge-injection device (CID) television cameras and an optical beamsplitter. Both single-foil OTR and two-foil OTR interference experiments were performed. Preliminary results are compared to a reference variable quadrupole, single screen technique. New aspects of using OTR properties for pointing the e-beam on the FEL oscillator axis, as well as measuring e-beam emittance are addressed. 7 refs., 9 figs.

The experimental setup developed here demonstrates the capability to observe and measure OTR due to an electron beam from a linear accelerator. The setup is compact, simple, and readily adapted to experimental work. Through the use of two software programs (QuickCapture and Image 1.14) and the QuickCapture frame grabber board, both qualitative and quantitative results are possible. One of the useful qualitative results is a three-dimensional beam profile, which is quickly produced from a captured image. The system measured the relative intensity with a 3% variation between several images of the same source. Angular measurements of OTR can be made with an angular resolution of 600 microradians. Keywords: Optical transition radiation; Charged particle beams; Theses; Beam profiling. (jhd).

Book excerpt: The modulated beam of the free electron laser when passed through a thin target should produce strong transition radiation. The measurement of the transition radiation is a direct measurement of the electron beam modulation in the free electron laser A transition radiation experiment using the Stanford MKIII Infrared Free Electron Laser (IRFEL) has been proposed. The analysis has centered on TRANSPORT, a computer program used for designing charged particle beam systems. The MKIII IRFEL wiggler exit bending magnet system was modeled using TRANSPORT. Analysis reveals that the transverse emittance and momentum spread characteristics will cause the modulated beam to demodulate along the path of the central trajectory. A detector location 10 millimeters downstream of the first bending magnet is found suitable for the measurement of the electron beam modulation. For this case the thin foil must be rotated approximately 11.25 degrees about the y axis to yield a minimum effective picobunch extent as seen by the thin foil. Alternate FEL systems are suggested for investigation.

Book excerpt: This memo considers placement of an ultra thin carbon foil into the SLC beam. Transition radiation light would be emitted from the surface of the foil. The optical spot from the foil could be viewed with a microscope objective lens and registered with an image detector. Multiple scattering for the foil thicknesses necessary will not affect the beam emittance. Calculations show that a thin carbon foil can withstand the electron beam if the electron beam is larger than 10 .mu.m in size. There are many possible radiation mechanisms from a foil - bremsstrahlung, black body temperature radiation, Cerenkov light, scintillation light, and transition radiation. Transition radiation is apparently dominant. It is proposed to use thin carbon foils, 75 to 150 A thick. Calculations indicate that 5 x 101° beam electrons will radiate a useable number of optical photons. Specifically with 150 A foils the fractional yield of useful optical photons is 10−3 photons per incident electron 5 x 10/sup +7/ optical photons imaged upon an image plane. Spread these photons over a 32 x 32 pixel CCD and one has the readout system of a monitor.

Book excerpt: An experimental technique for observing Optical Transition Radiation, (OTR), that is both simple and effective, is shown. A Macintosh II computer equipped with an image frame grabber board and Image software package allows for extensive analysis of the captured electron beam spot OTR patterns. The equipment is capable of measuring relative intensities to better than 1% for a constant source image. With beam energies of nearly 100 MeV the captured OTR images show an unexpected asymmetry in the beam intensity profile. The variations of the beam intensity and shape are shown for nominally steady beam conditions. Using Image, integrated signals of the beam spot OTR patterns for several targets as a function of beam current show a linear relationship, thereby creating a technique for computing electron beam current. Portions of the beam profile with varying percentages of beam spot maximum intensity also show a linear relationship between beam current and OTR image intensity. A radiation cone OTR pattern has been observed for the NPS linac beam. From the pattern, the Lorentz factor for the 100 MeV electrons is observed to be less than the computed value, and probably indicates the non-collinearity of the electron beam.

Book excerpt: The gain, phase shift, wavefront curvature and radius of the radiation envelope in a free electron laser amplifier are obtained in the small signal regime. The electron beam is assumed to have a Gaussian density distribution in the transverse direction. Numerical calculations indicate that the radius and curvature of the radiation beam entering a wiggler asymptote to unique, spatially constant values after a finite transition region. However, in the asymptotic region the wavefronts are divergent. Analytical expressions for the gain, phase shift, curvature and spot size and derived. It is shown analytically that small perturbations of the optical waist and curvature about the matched value are spatially damped out, indicating the stability of the matched envelope. When the electron beam envelope is modulated in space, the optical spot size oscillates with an almost identical wavelength but is delayed in phase. In the case of small amplitude long wavelength betatron modulation of the electron beam envelope, generation of optical sidebands in wave number space is examined and the effect on the dispersions characteristics of the primary wave is found to be negligible for typical experimental parameters.

Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, radiation chemistry emerged as a multi-faceted field encompassing all areas of science. Radiation chemical techniques are becoming increasingly popular and are being routinely used not only by chemists but also by biologists, polymer scientists, etc. "Radiation Chemistry: Present Status and Future Trends" presents an overall view of the different aspects of the subject. The chapters review the current status of the field and present the future opportunities in utilizing radiation chemical techniques. This will be of interest to chemists in general and in particular to radiation chemists, chemical kineticists, photochemists, physical-organic chemists and spectroscopists. In view of the diverse nature of the field, the book is a multi-authored effort by several experts in their particular areas of research. Six main areas, both basic and applied, were identified and the book is organized around them. The topics were selected in terms of their relative importance and the contribution of radiation chemistry to the general areas of chemistry, biology and physics. The topics covered are as diverse as gas phase radiation chemistry, the use of radiation chemical techniques, the treatment of water pollutants, the chemical basis of radiation biology, and muonium chemistry. The book also contains an update of the next generation electron accelerators.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beam diagnostics is an essential constituent of any accelerator, so that it is named as "organs of sense" or "eyes of the accelerator." Beam diagnostics is a rich field. A great variety of physical effects or physical principles are made use of in this field. Some devices are based on electro-magnetic influence by moving charges, such as faraday cups, beam transformers, pick-ups; Some are related to Coulomb interaction of charged particles with matter, such as scintillators, viewing screens, ionization chambers; Nuclear or elementary particle physics interactions happen in some other devices, like beam loss monitors, polarimeters, luminosity monitors; Some measure photons emitted by moving charges, such as transition radiation, synchrotron radiation monitors and diffraction radiation-which is the topic of the first part of this thesis; Also, some make use of interaction of particles with photons, such as laser wire and Compton polarimeters-which is the second part of my thesis. Diagnostics let us perceive what properties a beam has and how it behaves in a machine, give us guideline for commissioning, controlling the machine and indispensable parameters vital to physics experiments. In the next two decades, the research highlight will be colliders (TESLA, CLIC, JLC) and fourth-generation light sources (TESLA FEL, LCLS, Spring 8 FEL) based on linear accelerator. These machines require a new generation of accelerator with smaller beam, better stability and greater efficiency. Compared with those existing linear accelerators, the performance of next generation linear accelerator will be doubled in all aspects, such as 10 times smaller horizontal beam size, more than 10 times smaller vertical beam size and a few or more times higher peak power. Furthermore, some special positions in the accelerator have even more stringent requirements, such as the interaction point of colliders and wigglor of free electron lasers. Higher performance of these accelerators increases the difficulty of diagnostics. For most cases, intercepting measurements are no longer acceptable, and nonintercepting method like synchrotron radiation monitor can not be applied to linear accelerators. The development of accelerator technology asks for simutanous diagnostics innovations, to expand the performance of diagnostic tools to meet the requirements of the next generation accelerators. Diffraction radiation and inverse Compton scattering are two of the most promising techniques, their nonintercepting nature avoids perturbance to the beam and damage to the instrumentation. This thesis is divided into two parts, beam size measurement by optical diffraction radiation and Laser system for Compton polarimeter. Diffraction radiation, produced by the interaction between the electric field of charged particles and the target, is related to transition radiation. Even though the theory of diffraction radiation has been discussed since 1960s, there are only a few experimental studies in recent years. The successful beam size measurement by optical diffraction radiation at CEBAF machine is a milestone: First of all, we have successfully demonstrated diffraction radiation as an effective nonintercepting diagnostics; Secondly, the simple linear relationship between the diffraction radiation image size and the actual beam size improves the reliability of ODR measurements; And, we measured the polarized components of diffraction radiation for the first time and I analyzed the contribution from edge radiation to diffraction radiation.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of Gaussian radiation beams caused by reflection off mirrors is an important issue for FELs operating as oscillators. The reflected radiation from a single incident Gaussian mode will contain other modes due to the finite mirror size, the deflection of the beam and mismatches in the curvature. A method for analytic computation of the reflection matrix is developed by taking the convolution of the source function at the surface of the mirror with the paraxial propagator. The mirror surface that reflects spherical incoming wavefronts into spherical outgoing is determined analytically. Integral expressions for the reflection coefficients R(mn) sub pq for any incoming mode u sub mn into the outgoing u sub pq are obtained as functions of the deflection angle phi, the reflected beam waist sub 0 and the mirror size. Analytic expansions of the reflection matrix in powers of the diffraction angle theta sub d “1 are then obtained in both Hermite and Laguerre representations. The cross-coupling among vector components of the radiation field, caused by the curvature of the mirror surface, is included. It is shown that the lowest order contribution to the off-diagonal matrix elements is caused by the finite mirror size. The effects of the mirror curvature and the deflection of the light beam enter the reflection matrix as first order corrections in theta sub d. Keywords: Free electron lasers; Laser oscillators; Optical resonators; Reflection matrix. (jhd).
