Book excerpt: In the point-to-point transmission an optical signal suffers mainly from attenuation and dispersion. The ongoing research has been focusing on containing this issue by proposing innovative designs in order to provide for an element compensating these effects. This research work focuses on the development of a new design of wide band high concentration optical amplifier. It suggests compensating for attenuation and dispersion both using the same technique. It consists of two stages of 1.5m and 9m long Erbium-Doped Fiber (EDF) optimized to operate in C-band and L-band, respectively. Further, a Chirped Fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is used in each section to reflect the amplified signal back to the active area so that the overall gain spectrum can be enhanced over a wider frequency spectrum. Using a semi-analytical model (GainMaster), is suggested to verify the proposed design. A numerical model is carried out to implement the energy rate equations for the erbium ions population inversions. In addition, an extensive work has been carried out to implement this design experimentally. The experimental results show that the proposed amplifier gives a wider (1540nm to 1610m) flat high gain (22dB) with variation of ±3dB and low noise figure less than (6.5dB) at low input signal power (-30dBm) . Though solved by CFBG partially, this work has not carried out a quantified exploration of issues related to dispersion, mainly due to unavailability properly characterized equipment. Also an extensive work has been carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed amplifier by comparing the performance against other available amplifiers. The performance shows that the band width 5nm higher than the existing amplifier with low noise figure about 7dB and gain flatness about 70nm which is higher than the other two amplifiers by 30dm.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: EDFA (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier) is a mature technology and is the workhorse for all optical networks, yet its relatively large size and small band width (mainly in the C-band regime) requires further research and development efforts to achieve the ever-wanted small, compact, wide bandwidth, and efficient fiber amplifiers. In this thesis we conducted various experimental setup / configurations on a new high-gain phosphate glass Er-Yb doped fiber amplifiers. We investigated the gain characteristics of different lengths of active-fiber used in these amplifiers. Using a tunable laser, we studied the performance at different signal wavelengths and strengths (in the 1550 nm band), and influence of various pump parameters. Our results show a maximum 19 dB gain can be achieved using a 25-cm length of this active fiber, with pump power - 180 mW at 980 nm wavelength. This maximum gain is around the 1570 nm, which is in the L-band regime. The amplification bandwidth covers both C-band and L-band regimes. These results prove that a short length of this new fiber amplifier gives high gain levels that are comparable to those given by the current fiber amplifiers, and it covers a wider range of the optical communication spectra. This fiber amplifier has the potential for future mass production of very compact and efficient devices.

Book excerpt: Various aspects concerning Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) for use in C-band transmission system were investigated through experimental work culminating in the design and implementation of three different C-band EDF A's. The most promising being an EDF A utilizing double pass with tunable bandpass filter (TBF) amplification scheh,e. The configuration is a new approach to increase the sensitivity of the preamplifier before the signal is received by the receiver. This is because, limited sensitivity preamplifiers offered in the markets that limit the fiber optic link design. Thus, a new approach is desirable in solving the problem. In this thesis, new technique is proposed to increase the sensitivity up to IOdB. STM-I and STM-4 Bit Error Rate (BER) test on SDH network was successfully conducted in a laboratory environment. The test showed that no error was introduced. Finally it is concluded that DPEDFA is reliable to be used as a device to realize high sensitivity preamplifier, as its realization would result in a huge increase in additional power budget with minimum installation and maintenance complexity and cost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber optica technology is not entirely perfect, even with its amazing capabilities. As the transmissions cover larger distances, signal lost occurs and amplication is required. Hence, to transmit information over longer distances, the optical signals need to be boosted. The conventional method of boosting these signals is by using the electrical repeaters. The concept of electrical repeaters may sound attractive, but it poses several problems. This is because repeaters can only work at specific rate, wavelength and modulation format. The need for optical amplifiers has arisen because the repeaters concept delays the transmission and may introduce noise in the signal. Optical signals require amplification at different points on communications links. There are three types of amplifiers located along this link. The first type is the power amplifiers that are placed directly after the optical transmitter. Secondly, there are the in-line amplifiers that operate with a signal in the middle of a fiber-optic link and lastly, the pre amplifiers, which magnify the signal before it reaches the receiver. In this research, the design and development of optical amplifiers focused only on in-line amplifiers. Among the variety of optical amplifiers, Erbium doped fiber amplifiers were chosen as the optical amplifiers becuase erbium is the most efficient active medium that allows optical signals to be transmitted over very long distances without the need for signal regeneration. In this thesis, the hands-on experiments of the in-line optical amplifiers design were carried out. The design models comprised single and double stages of Erbium doped fiber amplifiers setups. At the single stage device level, testing was conducted to study the effects of the design parameters that are pump power, Erbium doped fiber length, signal wavelength and input power. The analysis on the double stage Erbium doped fiber amplifier was carried out for the device level testing based on the effects of the performance parameters i.e., gain, output power, noise figure and Amplified Spontaneos Emission level with the inclusion of tunable band pass filter. The results showed that the double stage amplifiers had a greater advantage compared to the single stage. the double stage Erbium doped fiber amplifiers with tunable band pass filter and the utilization of the backward pumping scheme had increased the gain more than that with the forward pumping scheme. The noise problem created in the Erbium doped fiber amplifiers was the main source that contributed to the high Amplified Spontaneous Emission. The concatenated chain caused the Amplified Spontaneous Emission to accumulate. Hence, inserting a tunable band pass filter in the design reduced the noise figure. Varying the parameters and selecting the suitable setup can improve the performance of the in-line amplifier system. The results of the study showed the most suitable design setup is the double stage Erbium doped fiber amplifiers, which increases the gain but reduce the noise level.
