Book excerpt: As roads become busier and automotive technology improves, there is considerable potential for driver assistance systems to improve the safety of road users. Longitudinal collision warning and collision avoidance systems are starting to appear on production cars to assist drivers when required to stop in an emergency. Many luxury cars are also equipped with stability augmentation systems that prevent the car from spinning out of control during aggressive lateral manoeuvres. Combining these concepts, there is a natural progression to systems that could assist in aiding or performing lateral collision avoidance manoeuvres. A successful automatic lateral collision avoidance system would require convergent development of many fields of technology, from sensors and instrumentation to aid environmental awareness through to improvements in driver vehicle interfaces so that a degree of control can be smoothly and safely transferred between the driver and vehicle computer. A fundamental requirement of any collision avoidance system is determination of a feasible path that avoids obstacles and a means of causing the vehicle to follow that trajectory. This research focuses on feasible trajectory generation and development of an automatic obstacle avoidance controller that integrates steering and braking action. A controller is developed to cause a specially modified car (a Mercedes HS class with steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire capability) to perform an ISO 3888-2 emergency obstacle avoidance manoeuvre. A nonlinear two-track vehicle model is developed and used to derive optimal controller parameters using a series of simulations. Feedforward and feedback control is used to track a feasible reference trajectory. The feedforward control loops use inverse models of the vehicle dynamics. The feedback control loops are implemented as linear proportional controllers with a force allocation matrix used to apportion braking effort between redundant actuators. Two trajectory generation routines are developed: a geometric method, for steering a vehicle at its physical limits; and an optimal method, which integrates steering and braking action to make full use of available traction. The optimal trajectory is obtained using a multi-stage convex optimisation procedure. The overall controller performance is validated by simulation using a complex proprietary model of the vehicle that is reported to have been validated and calibrated against experimental data over several years of use in an industrial environment.

One of the important features demanded of CAVs is collision avoidance, whether it is a stationary or a moving obstacle. Due to complex traffic conditions and various vehicle dynamics, the collision avoidance system should ensure that the vehicle can avoid collision with other vehicles or obstacles in longitudinal and lateral directions simultaneously. The longitudinal collision avoidance controller can avoid or mitigate vehicle collision accidents effectively via Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Brake Assist System (BAS), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which has been commercially applied in many new vehicles launched by automobile enterprises. But in lateral motion direction, it is necessary to determine a flexible collision avoidance path in real time in case of detecting any obstacle. Then, a path-tracking algorithm is designed to assure that the vehicle will follow the predetermined path precisely, while guaranteeing certain comfort and vehicle stability over a wide range of velocities. In recent years, the rapid development of sensor, control, and communication technology has brought both possibilities and challenges to the improvement of vehicle collision avoidance capability, so collision avoidance system still needs to be further studied based on the emerging technologies. In this book, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current collision avoidance strategies for traditional vehicles and CAVs. First, the book introduces some emergency path planning methods that can be applied in global route design and local path generation situations which are the most common scenarios in driving. A comparison is made in the path-planning problem in both timing and performance between the conventional algorithms and emergency methods. In addition, this book introduces and designs an up-to-date path-planning method based on artificial potential field methods for collision avoidance, and verifies the effectiveness of this method in complex road environment. Next, in order to accurately track the predetermined path for collision avoidance, traditional control methods, humanlike control strategies, and intelligent approaches are discussed to solve the path-tracking problem and ensure the vehicle successfully avoids the collisions. In addition, this book designs and applies robust control to solve the path-tracking problem and verify its tracking effect in different scenarios. Finally, this book introduces the basic principles and test methods of AEB system for collision avoidance of a single vehicle. Meanwhile, by taking advantage of data sharing between vehicles based on V2X (vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure) communication, pile-up accidents in longitudinal direction are effectively avoided through cooperative motion control of multiple vehicles.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Full market penetration for autonomous vehicle requires complete solutions for operation during winter driving conditions. This work addresses three key issues relevant to the dynamic response of an autonomous vehicle when faced with reduced friction due to snow and ice on the road when attempting a double lane change obstacle avoidance maneuver. Two low friction scenarios as well as an improvement to simulation methods are presented. The first low friction scenario an autonomous vehicle may encounter is one in which the road surface friction coefficient is incorrectly assumed to be dry pavement. This scenario could occur in the presence of clear ice on the road which is undetectable by the vehicle until it begins traversing the effected area. In this case, the vehicle must react in a way which maintains vehicle control during the maneuver by adapting to the loss of tractive force at the wheels. This work presents a method for altering the look ahead distance of the common pure pursuit lateral control method for autonomous vehicles. This method stabilizes the vehicle during the maneuvers by dynamically changing the look ahead distance based on cross track error in addition to vehicle velocity. Implementation in the autonomous test vehicle used in this work shows an elimination of off-road occurrences during double lane changes on ice and a 46\% reduction of off-read occurrences during single lane changes. The second low friction scenario an autonomous vehicle may encounter is one in which the road surface friction coefficient is known by the autonomous vehicle through it's own perception or through vehicle to vehicle/infrastructure communication. In this case the vehicle must plan it's path accordingly to ensure the vehicle successfully avoids the obstacle while maintaining control and passenger comfort. This work presents an optimization method which results in a minimum maneuver length across a profile of friction surfaces at a single velocity. This work also investigates the lack of correlation between the autonomous test platform operating on an icy surface and a simulation using a constant coefficient for low friction surfaces. The simulation environment used accurately predicts vehicle dynamic response when simulating operation on dry pavement with a divergence in response on friction values below that of packed snow ($\mu=0.3$). On lower friction surfaces the test vehicle exhibits significant variation in response to steering input. This work presents a stochastic method for representing friction surface in simulation across a grid map to bring simulation vehicle position prediction in line with test vehicle behavior on icy surfaces. This method shows a strong correlation between the simulation and test vehicle during rapid double lane changes and is further validation through the application of previously developed control and path planning methods.

This short book covers various strategies of designing the decision making, trajectory planning, and tracking control, as well as share driving, of the human-automation to adapt to different levels of the automated driving system. More specifically, we introduce an end-to-end decision-making module based on the deep Q-learning, and improved path-planning methods based on artificial potentials and elastic bands which are designed for obstacle avoidance. Then, the optimal method based on the convex optimization and the natural cubic spline is presented. As for the speed planning, planning methods based on the multi-object optimization and high-order polynomials, and a method with convex optimization and natural cubic splines, are proposed for the non-vehicle-following scenario (e.g., free driving, lane change, obstacle avoidance), while the planning method based on vehicle-following kinematics and the model predictive control (MPC) is adopted for the car-following scenario. We introduce two robust tracking methods for the trajectory following. The first one, based on nonlinear vehicle longitudinal or path-preview dynamic systems, utilizes the adaptive sliding mode control (SMC) law which can compensate for uncertainties to follow the speed or path profiles. The second one is based on the five-degrees-of-freedom nonlinear vehicle dynamical system that utilizes the linearized time-varying MPC to track the speed and path profile simultaneously. Toward human-automation cooperative driving systems, we introduce two control strategies to address the control authority and conflict management problems between the human driver and the automated driving systems. Driving safety field and game theory are utilized to propose a game-based strategy, which is used to deal with path conflicts during obstacle avoidance. Driver's driving intention, situation assessment, and performance index are employed for the development of the fuzzy-based strategy. Multiple case studies and demos are included in each chapter to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. We sincerely hope the contents of this short book provide certain theoretical guidance and technical supports for the development of intelligent vehicle technology.

The passivity-based MPC approach provides a framework in which a wide range of complex vehicles can be accommodated to obtain a safer and more realizable tool during the path-planning stage. During task execution, the optimization step is continuously repeated to take into account new local sensor measurements. These ongoing changes make the path generated rather robust in comparison with techniques that fix the entire path prior to task execution. Book excerpt: Abstract : The research in this report incorporates the improvement in the autonomous driving capability of self-driving cars in a dynamic environment. Global and local path planning are implemented using the D* path planning algorithm with a combined Cubic B-Spline trajectory generator, which generates an optimal obstacle free trajectory for the vehicle to follow and avoid collision. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is used for the longitudinal and the lateral control of the vehicle. The presented motion planning and control algorithm is tested using Model-In-the-Loop (MIL) method with the help of MATLAB® Driving Scenario Designer and Unreal Engine® Simulator by Epic Games®. Different traffic scenarios are built, and a camera sensor is configured to simulate the sensory data and feed it to the controller for further processing and vehicle motion planning. Simulation results of vehicle motion control with global and local path planning for dynamic obstacle avoidance are presented. The simulation results show that an autonomous vehicle follows a commanded velocity when the relative distance between the ego vehicle and an obstacle is greater than a calculated safe distance. When the relative distance is close to the safe distance, the ego vehicle maintains the headway. When an obstacle is detected by the ego vehicle and the ego vehicle wants to pass the obstacle, the ego vehicle performs obstacle avoidance maneuver by tracking desired lateral positions.
