A scatter factor is developed using statistical techniques to cover the variation in fatigue life among nominally identical specimens subjected to identical loading histories. A procedure is included to handle those cases where the life demonstrated in the laboratory is a least-of-two test result. The statistical analysis is supplemented by a review of numerous constant- and variable-amplitude test results which reveals that the log normal distribution is applicable and the standard deviation of log life is constant within a certain range of average cycles to failure. Fatigue test results of 120 composite aluminum structures are utilized to compute an unbiased sample standard deviation. A significant development of the derived statistical approach is the removal of the necessity to determine confidence intervals for the true mean and standard deviation. This is accomplished by the introduction of a new random variable from which these unknown population parameters vanish.

A fatigue scatter factor is defined as the ratio of the mean life to the life for a specified probability of failure and confidence level. For design purposes, operational life scatter factor are defined in terms of the joint probability distribution of the applied loads spectra variation in a fleet of aircraft and the basic fatigue life scatter represented by fatigue test data. Basic fatigue life scatter properties for aluminum alloy materials and structures were statistically derived from a fatigue test data survey of over 6,000 specimens. The basic scatter derived frequency and probability distributions greatly deviate from the log Normal distribution beyond micron + or -2 sigma. Several joint probability distribution models illustrate the procedure of calculating operational life scatter factors. An actual aircraft service failure history is accurately predicted by the joint probability distribution concept. A procedure for the development of fatigue strength design-analysis charts is outlined and illustrated by several examples. The charts, in the form of damage rate curves, are defined by generalized loads spectra parameters and the fatigue quality of the structural element.

It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Calculations were developed based on the analysis capabilities of their time incorporating all the latest technologies of their era. At the time, that technology was pencil-and-paper calculations. Today's calculations are computer-based. The widespread use of computing methods has greatly enhanced the analyst abilities for simulating internal stress and strain fields. Unfortunately, current fatigue analyses often force-fit current stress field calculations into fatigue analysis methods meant for nineteenth century stress calculation methods. It's never a good idea to force methods optimized for pre-computer calculations to work with computers. This text presents a more integrated approach to computer-based fatigue analysis methods. Like what was originally done, the latest technologies are applied rather than force-fitting computer computational capabilities into nineteenth-century techniques. Holistic approaches incorporating all knowledge have long been established as the most successful approach to problem-solving. Incorporating all knowledge with the most modern capabilities is the preferred approach. Holistic methods strive to reduce subjective inputs and replace them with consistent objective ones. This text aims to transition disjointed inefficient analyses into a unified computer-based holistic technique by introducing a fatigue analysis method specifically developed for computer simulations. Ultimately, for any method or theory to be valuable, it must be put into practice and prove itself. That entails leadership decision-making. Engineering design development activities will lead to final decisions. Information in a holistic approach must include the reliability of the information. How consistent are the predictions? Are the two types of potential scatter, analytic, and physical properly addressed? Is analytic scatter minimized while maintaining creativity? Is physical scatter totally understood? Effective program management requires knowledge on both types of scatter and, most importantly, the ability to realize the difference. A novel computer-based unified approach to fatigue methods is presented which incorporates a holistic approach for more accurate and consistent analyses, including the management and leadership of fatigue analysis projects, minimization of analytic scatter, management of physical scatter, and unification of methods that minimize subjective inputs often needed to bridge inconsistent techniques.
